Do Hummer's (H2 or H3) Look good?
Keyboard_Countessa replied to Dynasty's topic in General Off-Topic
Whenever I see a Hummer of any kind, I get the irresistable urge to violently slash the tires. So I guess that would be a "no" vote. -
At last, it's over! Now it's pretty much read/sleep/watch movies in school until finals (I have to take English and Govt. because of dual credit). Yay for being a senior.

Considering I'm graduating this year and will be completely deprived of band until spring concert band tryouts, I'm going to miss all of it.

We went to Dallas last month... the same place we went my sophomore year. Activities for the weekend included going to a mall arcade for a "Survivor-like game/leadership seminar" (which was lame), shopping in the rest of the mall ( ), eating at Medieval Times and spending half an afternoon at Six Flags.

In my case, I took it personally, got depressed and felt like a horrible section leader. Which, I admit, is definitely not what you should do. The section leader we had my first 2 years of high school, while the best player we had in the pit, was not always the best leader. She'd often be late to practice and didn't always help moving equipment. However, she was also well-liked and known for being the "percussion mom" (and bringing sweets). There's a difference between merely being popular and being an effective leader, and people sometimes have trouble finding the correct balance (I don't think I quite got the hang of it myself ). Yet watching her made me realize what kind of section leader I wanted to be: one who leads by example. As for the sweets, I let the other senior take care of that; she's better at cooking than me anyway.

Cy Creek Symphonic Band: 112 on stage, straight 1's for sightreading. Now onto learning new music for the spring concert in the same week as AP testing . -
In case anyone wants to see the full results, you can find them here: http://texascolorguardcircuit.org/2006champscores.php

Compared to the concert uniforms our band makes the girls wear, a tux is nothing! That abomination they call a dress is nothing but a trash bag with sleeves! And a sash. A pointless, pointless sash.

Every marching season we sell "entertainment books," which are full of coupons for just about everything. Once we sold poinsettias around Christmastime, and this year we sold Chick-Fil-A calendars. Our most memorable fundraiser was having a bunch of volunteers go up to Reliant Stadium before the Houston Bowl to stuff the cupholders with Chick-Fil-A coupons in return for $1000. And some free Chick-Fil-A cow toys.

Yay for being a senior! We didn't have to come in until 10:30 on Thursday and Friday. But since Symphonic Band is mostly seniors and starts at 10:30, our director made a special arrangement for us. Usually we have an hour of class, then advisory and lunch, but the director switched the advisory and lunch with the class time so that seniors didn't have to come until 11:30 . Sadly, I only got to enjoy this for one day; this morning I went to school for a Government AP review session. At least I got a donut for my efforts.

Is Having A Girlfriend/Boyfriend Overrated?
Keyboard_Countessa replied to Aegis Fang's topic in General Off-Topic
This debate has me torn. Part of me says that high school relationships can be overrated, especially the physical aspects an unnecessary drama. But part of me also says that they can be beneficial at least from the perspective of social develepmont; by learning the basics and having the opportunity to make mistakes, you can better enable yourself to pursue a truly meaningful relationship later on in life. Then there's the hopeless romantic in me who wants to have a fairy-tale soul-mate true-love happy-ending solution to everything. I do want to note for those who say that the fact that high school relationships don't last is a disadvantage, it could also be considered a plus. Seriously: how many people really want to marry their first boy/girlfriend? -

Director Changes
Keyboard_Countessa replied to Xenon's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
Ditto that for Cy-Creek HS; our head director is retiring. Although it is likely that our assistant director will take the position, there are rumors that one of the middle school directors is vying for the job. -
Saw Drumline. Didn't like it. For most of it I was willing to go along because I don't know anything about show bands and thus didn't know what would be considered "normal" for that kind of band. But the part where Nick Cannon's character can't read music... TOTALLY UNREALISTIC!! You expect me to believe that this so-called awesome drummer went throughout his entire musical career unable to read sheet music? I learned how to read music in 6th grade! I know there might be circumstances where someone could be a good musician without being able to read sheet music, but that ruined the movie for me. As for American Pie... "This one time, at band camp, someone started saying this movie quote, and we beat him senselessly to the ground."

Would it be off-topic to go back to the original topic? Our band banquet was on March 17th (St. Patrick's Day was the theme). We get Senior Wills when we come in, which are a bunch of inside jokes and heartfelt revelations that all the seniors write to their friends. We have dinner, present awards for Senior Favorites, and watch the Senior Slide Show (we had an extra slide show for our director since he's retiring after this year). The rest of banquet we spend dancing.

Concert II: 111 on stage, 123 for sightreading (a "rainbow," as our director called it ) Concert I: 111 on stage, 222 for sightreading. Symphonic: Ours isn't for another couple of weeks, but I have some concerns. We have to perform after Langhan Creek (just like last year, which was the first time we got a 2 in a while). -

Indoor Drumline vs. Percussion Ensembles
Keyboard_Countessa replied to Gltokensp06's topic in Section Heaven
Sadly I've never played in an indoor drumline, so my knowledge on that topic is limited. If we had it at our school I would definitely enjoy it because marching season is my favorite part of high school band. However, my freshman year we did have a "winter percussion ensemble" instead of indoor drumline, and I found that to be quite fun. Then, of course, every year at our school we have a concert in May just for percussion stuff. The program includes things like solos, traditional ensembles, novelty pieces (STOMP-esque stuff) as well as a guest artist that participates in some of the ensembles and does his own solo stuff. Basically, I'll take either/or when it comes to indoor drumline or just regular ensembles. At least both of them are more interesting than the rather tedious nature of concert band percussion. -
I once heard that the drumline tried to get shirts that said "We bang long and hard", but it wasn't approved. And there's tons of "saxual" innuendos... two of my favorites: You're not a real player until you've had sax on the beach. Practice safe sax. Wear a neckstrap.
