  1. I loved pep rallies when I was a freshman/sophomore. The trombone section would play Low Rider and one of the senior drummers would put on the biggest bass drum and dance around with it. Now the BDs won't let us play Low Rider anymore. Ah, memories...
  2. Yeah it kinda was... but afterwards a couple of people gave me hugs and my pit instructor told me this story about how once he had a marimba collapse while he was playing on it and he just shrugged and walked away. That made me feel better.
  3. Our drumline is shrinking! My freshman year we had almost 30 people, but now (my senior year) we're down to 21: 2 tenors, 4 snares, 5 basses, 10 pit (including 3 double reed players). We haven't had a real cymbal line since I was a sophomore, so they have the pit play cymbals at pep rallies and in the stands.
  4. I would die for a chance to be able to play with the Cavaliers, but I can't. You know, cuz of the whole "I'm not a guy" thing.
  5. Yay for pep rallies! Even if they make me go deaf from having to hold cymbals for the snare line, they're still fun.
  6. I've never fallen during a show since I don't march. My instrument, on the other hand... At this drumline contest we went to my sophonore year, I was wheeling my vibraphone onto the track when the frame just collapses. The BD couldn't fix it, so I had to play on another school's vibes, and when we were done the band parents with us had to half-roll, half-carry the vibes back to the truck so the BD could do some temporary repairs. Then I cried by the timpani because the whole thing just really shook me up.
  7. That's the idea. Like at our football game last night the team was winning in the fist 2 quarters. Then at halftime our show went really well (not perfect, but no major disasters), and we ended up losing 23-26. I realize that that's probably not the real reason we lost, but it's still a fun theory to tote around.
  8. Just don't expect to have a side of egg w/ that fish. My mom and sister tried to fry an egg in the street on an especially hot day. Didn't work.
  9. If it doesn't die of heat stroke first!
  10. I don't really think of in-section dating as incest. To be honest, most of my crushes have been on fellow percussionists!
  11. Our team has a reputation for sucking, but in the past couple of years it's actually gotten better. I have this theory, though, that there's an inverse relationship between how the football team does and how the band does. My freshman year we only won 2 games and the band went to Area UIL. Last year we won 6 games, and the band got a II at Region UIL.
  12. At least it's a dry heat. Unlike Houston, where there's so much humidity you can't even breath!
  13. I'm one of those "I <3 CAVIES!!" people. I blame my former pit instructor/lessons teacher. He showed me this clip from the 2001 world finals, and has a close-up on the pit and all their mallets were playing at the exact same height!! When I saw that, I went instantly from to . SCV is definately one of my favorites. I consider playing w/ them my ultimate "Impossible Dream". And as of this year, Madison Scouts is on my favorites list.
  14. along the lines of the original topic... can anyone tell me how being in a Div. II or III corps compares to Div. I? I've been thinking about trying out for Revolution this year, yet I'm tempted to try out for a Div. I corps (Carolina Crown has auditions in my area, so I've heard) but don't know if I'll be able to make a full commitment to it (this being my senior year, I want to miss as few school days or high school band events as possible).
  15. Considering that both of my most recent pit instructors attended Langham Creek, yes, I've heard of it.
  16. --you wear part of your band uniform to school --you conduct to songs on the radio --you've gone to a college football game just to see the bands --you finger your part on a pencil (or for drummers, drum w/ pencils) during math class --your own band director calls you a band nerd
  17. When I first heard that percussion would have to play a four-mallet piece, I didn't quite know what to think. Now that I've seen it I don't think it'll be that bad (especially since it's in triple time and i love triplets! ), but it means I'll be using up time I could be using for what I really need to work on, i.e. snare and timpani. (mostly timpani. the timpani piece scares me. )
