    The moment you let yourself understand that this activity is a completely subjective art and at the end of the day these results do not matter as long as these young adults are learning, growing, and creating great memories. That's all that truly matters. On a side note, so good to see full retreat back for BOA events. Breaking ranks and seeing everyone mingle is always so heart warming to see!

    Every band draws prior to announcements which helps determine the order of finalists. Essentially its random EXCEPT finals are in bottom half/top half split. So first 6 to perform scored in the bottom half of the 12 finalists and their order is determined on the number they drew. Last 6 to perform score in the top half and their order is also determined on the number they drew. Example from last year, CTJ at grand nats drew the very last number which means they were to perform last in finals except they were not in the top half therefore they performed last of the bottom split.

    Curious to know how many (if any) bands opt to not participate in area since it’s not a state year.

    I do think the new system is much better then what it was before. I tend to believe the inconsistencies came from the fact most of the panel changes between prelims and finals rather then a “flawed” system. Different judges have different ideas for what they like to listen for or see. I don’t know if there is/was training for these contests but this is the first use of this system. I expected some interesting results. But it cannot be horribly flawed considering they, in most peoples eyes and ears, got the top 2 correct in prelims and finals.

    I asked this same question for 5A state finals in the thread. I forget the user but he went through and made it clear, raw scores vs ordinals was not different much, if at all. Would love to do that for this contest but idk where to find the raw scores

    True! I wonder if they added up scores (like BOA or DCI) instead of doing ordinals if anything would’ve changed in placements.

    I think wording and what is being judged is the same at area and state. For example, content is a factor at both. But at state, the conferences who are using the 7 judge system, Music judges score in certain captions (I.e Woodwind, brass, percussion, ensemble, like how duncanville is.) But for areas that are using only 5 judges, the music judges score all of the separate captions “together” and do an overall music score. Where the same normal format of 3 music, 2 visual is in effect. I could be way off but that’s what I’m gathering from the document. I hope this makes sense haha

    Am I crazy, or is this recap more like state and not area. Area is still only 5 judges just with slightly different wording for scoring, no?

    As in Centennial was 1st and there was a big jump?? That’s shocking

    Duncanville has historically done reverse prelims placements for finals, so I assume this is the case again

    Horn is no where near as good as they used to be. Lost a lot of members due to covid. I think Prosper is a very safe bet for 4th but weirder things have happened. Rockwall and Sachse were placed next to eachother last night at Birdville.
