Texas Marching Classic 2019
LHSbandDad replied to FaultLineBlues's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
I could not find any information on this website about the schedule. Our director told us our prelims time, but does any one else know the complete schedule? I am assuming there is a finals, but don't know when it starts or when DM retreat / prelims awards / finals announcements are. Also am curious when the other bands perform. If anyone could please respond with some of those key schedule details, that would be great. Thanks!! -
2019 BOA Austin

I agree. I loved both shows. I loved how at the end of the Cedar Ridge show the band surrounded the "King" piece in a "check mate" sort of move. All the colors matched well and they sounded good. I agree with the music for Westwood and think in San Antonio when we are a little closer to Christmas, it will be even more of a hit. I don't know if anyone else noticed but in prelims the snowman fell over and at first I thought it was either planned or a fitting gesture considering how HOT it was that day. Maybe it was just me but I sort of enjoyed seeing the snowman "melt" in the hot Austin sun. I am sure it will stay upright in the cool air-conditioned Alamodome!! HA!! -

Charter flight (two planes). -
I had no idea there would be more BYU alums on this site!! What a small world!!
-
I did college band for one semester (football season) and quickly realized it was so much different than high school. I loved high school band and all the friendships. College band was a little too serious for me with mostly music majors. I was not a music major so I realized my time would be better spent studying on my core classes that would "pay the bills" and so I did not continue with college band. I have advised my three children to focus on their core major and not do college band at BYU, where they have gone and plan to go to college. With respect to my fellow BYU alums, my kids have reported to me that they are glad the did not join the BYU band because they don't think BYU would have made finals at BOA San Antonio. HA!!!

I completely agree!! It is up to us to come up with the money to pay the $1,400 to get our kids to Indy to attend GN above the normal band fees. There is no big corporate sponsor or district money or tax bond passed to support our band to go to this. I can not speak for other programs in other parts of the country, but for Leander (and by default most likely Vandy and Cedar Park) there is no school district money helping us get to Indy. Now we have an excellent and creative band booster program and incredible march a thon fund raisers and things like that but nothing like what is being described above where money just falls into our lap. Having said all that, and getting back to the OP question....I would have to imagine the decision from the director comes down to a simple R.O.I. calculation. Is the program on the rise and does it have a legitimate shot to semis and/or finals or not? If not, then it probably is not worth all the money it will take to make the trip. In our case, we were on the rise and our director felt like we had a chance and he talked to to boosters and the parents and we all agreed to do it. Things went better than we could ever have imagined in 2016 and so here we are going back again in 2019. Can't wait!! -

When will performance times be listed for this contest? Also, what judging criteria differences should we expect to see here -vs- BOA? -

Here are my thoughts on the top five. Cedar Park - I have always loved this band and their crisp clean lines and formations and they did not disappoint last night. . Vista Ridge - Love the new unis and the sound was great. I would love to see that amazing soprano solo split up, shortened, or shared with someone else or another instrument. I am excited to see if they add to or incorporate the table turn thing a little more. This show has potential. Just like last year I am sure they will continue to surprise and impress. CTJ - the fact that I could not tell about the prop mistake until I read it here says it all. Their sound is amazing. I look forward to seeing how they smooth out the edges on this one. Seems a little disjointed right now as evidenced by all the audience standing up when they thought it was over when it wasn't. Leander - OK, my kid is in the band so bias alert up front, but I agree with Leander Momma that this is my favorite show other than 4D and I think they are further along than we usually are at this point. We still have so much more to implement and add so hopefully the closer and the remaining elements help tie it all together. Vandy - again, as has been said by others, as soon as I saw this I knew they were going to win. From top to bottom it looked and sounded amazing and my wife loved how all the colors matched!! My final point and plea is to the BOA organizers to please figure out the parking thing. Getting out last night was a nightmare. The shuttle bus was a great idea but they were stuck in the lot with the rest of us. Seems like the police had everything blocked off and only letting one line of cars out in random succession. The stadium is such a nice venue it is a shame that parking and the line to buy tickets always seems to be so long. I have not studied the parking lot map but it would seem that there should be a way to use multiple exist and get more than one car out at a time. Also, for tickets and entry into the stadium it would be nice if multiple gates were opened for finals and multiple ticket booths. Those lines are historically long and in my opinion the only thing holding this regional back from being an A+ experience all around. -

My son said the reason they did not wear the feathers (a.k.a. plume) was because it was real windy and the directors did not want to risk any damage since they are so new (and expensive to replace). -
Honest Feedback
LHSbandDad replied to Stefen's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
I was in a military style marching band in HS and have always loved Texas A&M so with that perspective I could not help but notice all the lines and diagonals in your opener. I liked that about your show. Not that this is specific to your band, but my HS director used to always say to check your 45 degree diagonals and adjust if it was not straight so I am sure your directors are telling you the same thing. Good luck this year!! -
Any other reports of bands affected by the flooding from yesterday? I grew up in Southeast Texas and have heard my old band hall was flooded with instruments floating in their cases yesterday. The same thing happened to them two years ago with Harvey and they also lost some uniforms to the flooding. So sad they have to rebuild and re purchase instruments and uniforms after a flood again. Here I am thinking how fortunate my kid is to go to Grand Nats twice and some kids in Southeast Texas have had their band hall flooded twice. It puts things in perspective for me. Sad....

I agree PV A&M was amazing!! Texas State was there last year and was equally impressive so the last couple years have been great. Hopefully it is a surprise (UT?) this year and not listed on the schedule. (fingers crossed!!) -

I do not see an exhibition band listed for BOA Austin. Does anyone know if we will have a local college or university band attend? I sure hope so!! -

Thanks for heading this up. I was really proud to be wearing matching shirts with the other five Texas bands in 2016 and I can't wait to do it again in 2019!!
