DSHS had a very rough run in finals at TMC. It was uncharacteristic of their usual performance level. Difference between prelims and finals scores is actually proof the system is working.3 points

Region 30 and 31 just had their region contests today and the following bands received a 1st division: Boswell Coppell Crowley L.D. Bell North Crowley Trinity Weatherford Still waiting for Carroll and Haltom but there's a 99.9% chance they get 1's as well.3 points -
Aldine, CE King, Nimitz, and Westfield have looked interesting and have had some interesting results. Could they make finals? Eh, but they could definitely make some noise. I do feel bad for those Aldine ISD and Spring ISD schools though, their bands keep getting smaller and smaller.3 points

Dallas Hobbs and one other reacted to TWHSPercDad for a topic
I understand what you are saying, I really do. Let me give you another perspective though, from my band director and judging days. (1) Only half the score (even in performance captions - meaning the “individual” and “ensemble” captions) is based on the “how” (execution). The other half is the “what” (construction/difficulty, etc.of what is being performed). (2) Me, with my band director hat on, hates to receive what is generally called “tick tapes” from the ensemble judge. Why? Because if there are spacing, or form problems, I can see those easily also and I know how to fix them. That doesn’t mean the judge is not considering the execution component. The judge addresses that by the score that is given (100 possible out of the total200). I want to hear something, as a director, that is not as easily seen or perceived by me. When I watch the drill each day in rehearsal, it is not as easy to perceive the “what,” and how to possibly make changes ….. while still cleaning and addressing the execution. There is only 8 minutes that the judge can offer insights. Especially on an early season tape and performance, I want to hear things I DONT necessarily know — Not stating obvious drill performance issues. This may or may not address your issue, but I think it can address how the judge approached your critique tape.2 points -
How do you stay on top of bands’ progress?
JFNDOWBFAN and one other reacted to Tubalord11 for a topic
When I first came across this site, Boa and DCI for the first time after my sophomore year of HS, I think the best way was looking at past results, specifically Hornrank. They make it sooo easy to look at all the past boa comps, and many local circuit comps have historic results on their websites. YouTube is always great for finding past seasons performances, which you can then try to compare across recent years to find an upwards/downwards trends of programs, though there are many reasons for that (director changes, better/worse show designs, more overall talented kids, Ect..). Going through past forms on here is always great, but it's definitely a lot considering how many programs there are competing in Texas, which we all know is a lot, but then you even have the out-of-state programs2 points -
A lot of the bands from this area are seeing some significant improvements over the past few years and it’s definitely going to be interesting to see which bands make state. This area is becoming a bloodbath relative to the skill of all the programs in this area. That 5th or 6th state spot is going to be heavily contested.2 points

Correct. If 30 bands qualify for area, then the top 12 bands from prelims would advance to finals--and the top 6 bands from area finals would advance to state. If only 29 bands qualify for area, then the top 10 bands from prelims would advance to finals--and the top 5 bands from area finals would advance to state.2 points -
and just imagine if bridgeland, wakeland, prosper, and timber creek were going. like... yikes. there really is twice the number of SA finalist worthy bands in TX than SA finals spots. not convinced that's true for any other boa contest.2 points

My predictions. 1-Celina They would often get beat at contests in early season just to come back and beat everyone at state. 2-Sulphur Spring. They are just too good this year and their show is amazing. I love the concept, the music, the sound. They beat Farmersville, North Lamar, and Paris at the RC contest. 3-Canton/Farmersvile/North Lamar this is where it gets tricky for me. Cantons show is easy especially for them. Maybe if it is clean. It’s hard for me to ignore that they are the Canton Band and that they have been in the mix every year for decades. But generally, the show just doesn’t seem very cool. But I also haven’t seen a video in weeks. North Lamar is really good and their show is different. It’s like old school meets new school. I don’t think it’s done. That means they are in trouble. But what’s there I think is better than the other 2. If the end of the show is as good as the rest of it, then I could see them maybe challenging Sulphur Farmersville has great moments and it’s pretty clean but they rely heavily on the solo saxophone. Can they get a better or is this all they have? If they can get real clean they may take down Sulphur, They also beat NL 3 times yesterday so there’s that. On the edge- Paris, Van Alstyn, Lumberton, Bridge City, Pine Tree. All these bands are here for a reason. They are quality bands that you can’t ignore2 points -

Not a bad list at all. Having seen many of these bands already this year…..I would probably agree Marcus of Hebron right now….but honestly, probably a best 2 of three paper, rock, scissors with a few ties in there. I would flip 7-8, 10-11, 14-15 But would not be shocked at all to see your lisy unfold.1 point -

My finals ranking at this point: Pearland Dawson Dickinson SF Austin Clear Brook Foster Fulshear Clear Lake PaM Clements Clear Falls Shadow Creek ——————- The biggest unknowns to me are what Foster and Fulshear will bring to the table on Nov 2. My rankings are a combination of past performances and the history of certain bands hitting their peak just in time for Area/State. Dawson and Brook historically start out slower, but get hot when it matters.1 point -

It’s funny how friendly band kids are to their rival schools compared to the football teams. Rockwall be Rockwall Heath every year is one of the most heated games but then after the game some of the kids from each band go and eat together. One of the things I love most about what I do is the love each band has for each other no matter the size.1 point -

It's going to be a good one to watch. Cedar Park and Rouse are both great bands with very good shows this year. Lost is correct in that Cedar Park has a long consistent history of cleaning, performing and stepping it up at the end of the season. However, I can see Rouse doing well with that this year also. I would say betting odds are even money at this point (disclaimer: I am not betting or know of any betting, just a turn of phrase).1 point -
