2019 WGI - TCGC Season

Recommended Posts

Scores at Indianapolis prelims for the World class look a lot like the scores from last year. Some notable changes: Shenendehowa is having a weaker start, and got a score that was actually lower than what they got two weeks ago. Carmel is also having a weaker first WGI contest. Last year, they were scoring around the same as Avon, in the 83 range. Trumbull could challenge Carmel again this year, as that group scored around an 80 at Salem prelims. Pride of Cincinnati absolutely clobbered the competition in the Independent class. No surprise there. Bluecoats Indoor, in their second season, broke 80 and is pushing into the top 3 group, which right now includes Pride of Cincinnati, Blessed Sacrament, and Onyx. This shouldn't be all that surprising, since the design staff at Bluecoats is pretty much the same as the design staff that led Santa Clara Vanguard to their 3 WGI championships and consistent top 3 placements just a few years ago.

This is probably a good place to look back on the finals scores from last week's world class events, since a clearer picture of the field is starting to form. In Scholastic World, I'm thinking that the top 6 and maybe top 7 from this Indianapolis event will be difficult for any of the 3 Texas SW groups to beat. (The James Bowie guard has not performed yet). Add groups like Tarpon Springs, Stoneman Douglas, Flanagan, West Broward, Trumbull, Ayala, and Arcadia, and I think it's a steep uphill battle for any TX SW group to make finals, based on these early results. The highest scoring TX group so far, The Woodlands, had their score drop again (slightly) in finals last week, and got a 65-point-something. Fairly strong equipment and movement scores, particularly in vocabulary, where they cracked 70, but the considerably lower performance subcaption scores in design analysis and GE indicate to me that they're probably not performing all that great as an ensemble right now. Marcus seems to have the opposite issue, with lower equipment and movement scores. So, maybe weaker skills with a cleaner ensemble performance. It's hard to tell without actually seeing the shows. Still not sure what's going on with CTJ, whose early-season scores were way worse than last year's.

The hope of a Texas medal in IW has dimmed considerably. Black Gold's score dropped significantly in finals at WGI Houston. In fact, there was a complete GE score reversal between prelims and finals. The first panel had Black Gold clearly in first place in effect, but the finals panel preferred Cypress Independent. Kind of odd to see that drastic of a change. Black Gold still came out on top, but with a 74-point-something. Based on the scores we're seeing this week in IW, it'll be another uphill battle into that top group for any TX IW group. However, there are several excellent, finals-worthy TX guards in the IW class, which is great to see. And, of course, it's still early in the season. Things can, and do, change.

What is it going to take to get our guards to be at the same level as those SW groups mentioned above? We have amazing bands here. We ought to have amazing guards. We simply must figure out the magic missing ingredient and fix it.

Another thing I have often wondered, especially when watching the Indiana area guards. The dance ability of those guards is at the same level as our high school dance teams. But our dance teams are not our color guard members. Do Indiana area high schools put more emphasis on having their dancers do color guard rather than the school dance teams? Because if Leander had the Blue Belles on our guard squad, wow could we make some serious magic happen! So I am curious how it seems to be that the best guards in the nation also seem to be elite level dancers as well. Are their high school dance teams even THAT much better than their guards? If so, they must be incredible.

I'm under the impression that dance teams at these Midwest schools are a bit less of a thing than they are in Texas, so maybe the guards attract students with more dance training. Better movement training would help explain part of the discrepancy, but I also think the top Texas groups don't quite understand designing for the World class rubric. They seem kind of stuck for whatever reason, and my gut advice is to tell them to seek (more) help from the outside.

Interesting. I did not consider that school dance teams might be less of a thing up there. I just did a tiny bit of research and found that Avon does have a dance team, but I could not find one from Carmel. I also noticed that Carmel has all of its Winterguard, Colorguard and band students enrolled in something called a Dance Performance class throughout the school year. Fascinating! I wonder how common that is.

I agree that we don’t seem to have the same level of design work here. We need to steal away some of these DCI guard kids when they age out and have them teach us a thing or two! Or better yet, some of the guard instructors and designers from the Midwest. Though I would not imagine that they would have any interest in leaving.

From what I know, Avon does have a dance team as they perform during football games in the fall. I couldn't tell you anything about their competition schedule as they are separate from the band world. They have pulled a few kids from the dance team for the indoor winds program a couple of years ago to add to that show, but they are in their own world apart from the band. I am hearing that there is a dance class during the school day that maybe separate from the dance team that guard members take.

I have heard of instructors coming in to assist in dance technique, body and moves for the indoor shows and they do have a lot of former students and DCI kids come and assist.

Avon has 3 winter guards in competition.... Cadets, SA and SW and I think Carmel has the same. Avon is also running a SA drum line, SW drum line and SW Winds program and Carmel does not have any of these, but both Carmel and Avon have great orchestra programs as well. The guards our usually close in scores to each other which make for interesting competitions and then add Center Grove to the local mix. I'm curious how Trumbull ranks up this year being they were 2nd in SW last year. Last years Forgotten Circus is one of my favorite guard shows which I thought would be tough to beat as a show design, but this years story telling show ranks up there IMHO. A completely different show from last year. I'm always amazed at what those kids can do with those rifles and sabres.

some of the programs outside of Texas have JV guards that start in Middle School - where from what I have seen in Texas - there is no introduction to guard until they enter High School. that in itself would increase the quality of Texas guards

Actually Leander ISD does involve 8th graders. Vista Ridge is currently using 8th graders on their JV WGI squad and Leander has used 8th graders in the fall season. I definitely think Texas needs to introduce CG to middle school students right away these days. If not sooner. Incorporate it into the dance class offerings in the middle schools.

I know that we also have techs and specialists come in and work with the band kids on body movements and choreography but I love the idea of an entire class period for colorguard members. They could do so much with that class. It would also be a good way for kids to figure out if they might like to be in the guard. It’s interesting though that the Carmel site states that the band kids also take the class. I’m not sure a year round class on dance and body movement is necessary but hey! Carmel is #1 for a reason so I can’t argue with it.

I’m with you on Avon again this year. I loved last year’s show so much and was afraid that I would be disappointed in this year’s, but I’m not. I love it. Such an interesting show and the creativity is through the roof. Where do these designers come up with this stuff? It’s just brilliant. And Avon is brilliant. No one better!

Knox jr high (tw-college park feeder) I believe has a color guard class in their schedule. This year mccullough jr high (TWHS feeder) added a color guard class to the schedule.

So far the two competitions we’ve gone to with the jr high team- there has been I think 5 jr high cadet teams- and the other cadet teams were combination jr high and Highschool kids.

I’m always curious to the logistics of class time and practice time and the pull of other extra curriculars at the school that kids have to choose between participating in.

I think we will start to see more of it offered at the middle school/junior high level very soon. We better if we ever want to catch up with the Midwest!

I think it helps when younger siblings see the amazing things that their older brothers and sisters are doing in band and color guard. They already know what they have to look forward to so why not take advantage of that growing interest and start training them early! Schools could have color guard exhibitions to show other kids what a beautiful art it really is and build interest even more.

There’s another WGI this coming weekend in Leander at Rouse HS. It’s technically WGI ~ Austin. I plan to be there for most of the Sunday finals after church, so hopefully I can catch the end of the Scholastic A groups. Churchill is on fire this year in that division!

Lots of great groups in Open Class as well including Dawson, Klein Oak, McNeil, Dripping Springs, Little Elm, Cedar Park, Hendrickson, Flower Mound and Leander. What a line up! I’m also excited to see The Woodlands and James Bowie join CTJ for the World Class division. I’m sure CTJ has added quite a bit to their routine now, and I can’t wait to see what Bowie and TWHS bring. I know Bowie is using those huge blobs from their marching show last fall. Should be a lot of fun to see!

This one won’t be broadcast on Flo, so you guys come out and watch some gorgeous guard work this weekend!
