Legendary Shows

Very rarely do these shows appear online, so I wanted to direct the forum's attention to these. PCEP 2000 and 2001 were two phenomenal follow ups to their 1999 BOA title. I can't say I've ever quite seen a show like the either of these. 2000 for its rawness and edge (and bold message) and 2001 for its iconic design. I've been following the activity for 10+ years (not *that* long, I know lol), and this is the first time I've ever seen 2000, even after years of searchingSorry if I'm breaking a rule or anything... just wanted to share my long-awaited discovery. 

 

The kids at Plymouth-Canton really knew how to perform. Look at the individual marchers -- you'll be hard to find confidence, ownership and control like that in many other programs. 1999-2001 was undoubtedly a remarkable reign for the program.

What were the show selections for Programme One?

In 2001, they actually covered the top of the box in Finals on the final set and wrapped a pink bow around the side.  People went nuts when they marched off the field with everyone still inside!!

 

Plymouth-Canton 2001 is still, in my opinion, the greatest marching band show ever.

Wow! I had seen PCEP 99 and 01 before, but this is the first time I've been able to see a video of the 2000 show. That show was deep! I really enjoyed it.

Let's just say the cheerleaders did NOT take kindly to the What's That Spell????? portion of the 2000 show.

Id have to give a shoutout to SFA 2003. One of the more overlooked shows from their early 2000s reign. Very gorgeous ballad and athletic, fast paced drill in the opener.

It's straight-up Harmonium. Movements I, II, and III in order.

 

"What do you mean the world is ending? I have a hair appointment tomorrow!" 2000 is still entertaining, but it's a bit dated, and it wears its themes a little too close to the surface. Lots of difficult marching and playing at the same time, though, which you don't see as much of once you hit 2008 or so. Yeah, the early 2000s shows might have been dirtier, but at least they tried!

These may not be legendary shows, but they are some of my all time favorites in no particular order:

 

Plymouth Centennial 1990 "The Music of Stephen Sondheim"

 

Broken Arrow 2011 "Destiny Leaves You No Choice"

 

Marian Catholic 1998 "Exotic Gardens"

 

Carmel 2015 "Nine Lives"

 

Kyoto Tachibana 2015 Indoor competition show

 

I loved Vandergrift and Hebron's shows last year as well. I just need to see how they age for me.

Cedar Park's 2016 All Hallows Eve is another local that I love. It would just be disingenuous of me to include a CP show as my son now attends CP and is in the band (He did not attend in 2016).

I always get years confused for Japanese bands like Seika and Tachibana's shows, but I've seen this one enough times where I looked at the opening set and went "Oh yeah....the one with Saki's opening Trumpet solo" .

 

I have to say your reference to calling it an 'Indoor' competition show really got me thinking. I don't know if I would call the All-Japan Marching Band Contest an Indoor circuit simply because the contests are held in gymnasiums and arenas.  The judging is modeled after UIL and although the bands will perform in many styles, it's still predominantly 80s era milicorps.  I'd still call what they do a field show.

It's still a field show, but it is vastly different from the shows that they perform at baseball games. I saw them several years ago when we went to the Japan high school baseball championships (it's like College Football National championships in the states) and was immediately a fan. What a great show! I was a little bummed out this year when we were in Kyoto and there wasn't a chance to see them.
