I am in no way a professional but I recently watched video of Haltom's show and can't help but think that there are just props on the field for what they want to do. They have a big band with a ton of large props that are in the middle of the field for a large part of the show. Frankly, it looked cluttered at times....especially with such a large band roaming though them. When they're compact, it obviously helps the sound...at the same time, that compactness (I may have made up a word!) of the show combined with the difficulty of the show combined with the large props in the middle of the field made things look a little messy. Their sound, though....WOW! Their sound has improved so much over the last few years....it's very bold and brassy. Always a good thing! Quote

I do think the props Spin and stuff but that just helps with general effect really . They have gotten a lot bigger and the show in general is really hard . But who know really maybe they pull it off and maybe not . AllWe can do is sit and watch and all they can do is put in there all and try to make it the best show they can Quote

BandFriendzz Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 Im new this this forum but i love band with a passion and ive had several family members who was also in band. With that being said i try to go to as many performances withing the tarrant county area and Area B is a contest in which is very close to me. Also i have heard almost all of these groups so far this year and have some opinions and predictions based on what i see and like as well. Finals: Most Groups in this area are very good and its really hard to pick but ima go for it and give reasonings. (no order yet) Keller Prosper Haltom Waxa. LD Bell Coppell Duncanville Timber Creek Keller Central Richland Now im gonna do the bottom 4 of prelims and then that group i put 6th could make state if taken 6. Again this is my opinions. so if you dont agree im sorry. 10-9 Keller central: Okay so with keller central ive heard them at games and boa dfw. Although i enjoyed the show and thought it was clever, i felt it was missing something and i dont think there is a ot to do with the theme visually. They did pretty well but i dont think they will compare to some of these groups. With That being said i put them making finals but staying either 9th or 10th. Richland: I saw Richlands show twice last week. ones at the bisd Band fest and then again at mansfield. When watching it the first time i found myself bored . The theme didnt speak to me and was alittle pointless . I do like some of the music choices but it still needs work.I also compared them to haltom performance that night and it was not at any level haltom was that nightt. On saturday the run they had was alot better and i enjoyed more but they only have to the ballad and region is next week and area is coming up fast and so i heard they just added the ballad last week and idk if they are going to be able to develop the music in such a short time. This is some of the reasons i have them either 9th or 10th as well. 8-7 Duncanville: When i saw a video of the on flo from bedford i wasnt a fan at all. seems like the same duncaville as every year and it really starts to bother me alittle now. But the reason i still have them in finals is because of the fact of when is the last time they didnt make state? thy tend to do better in uil than boa but i think this will be the first year ever that they wont advance . so i put them 8th. Coppell: Love the music design and show design in general and again they have a very high level of excellence in uil. But when i did watch them on flo I thought they are great but still felt something was missing. Its really hard to figure out these but again this is my opinion as well as id like a whole new group of bands going to state and not the same old same old and thats a reason i put them 7th and maybe taking a spot if they advance 6. 6th Waxa.: I watched the show Saturday for the first time and i loved and i mean loved the musical selection . again i wasnt sure about the design and theme but they may have alot more to add. any who every year i really enjoy this group and i think if they do take 6 to state this year from area b this will most likely be the 6th spot . 5-2 Okay so this is honestly the hardest thing ever cause all 5 of theses group are so good so i think 2nd through 5th can go anyway. Prosper: This show is super neat and very very uil friendly . This is also the only texas band attending boa grand nationals and they are going for it. i really enjoy the musical and visual aspect of the show. with that being said i def think they are going to advance but i just dont know where to place them. Haltom: Okay this group is one that i wasnt 100% sure about due to recent results but when i saw them at mansfield they looked tired and dead tbh and the closer which they recently added with marching fell apart. say that but the design aspect i love . The opener , solos and ballad is beautiful . as welll as they have the entire show on the field. i thought about keller and how usually they arent the best in the beginning but pull through and i truly believe that is what will happen. especially with all the they now have to clean. Musically its the best ive heard from haltom they really just need to work on tempo stuff. then again i dont know where they will be put but i really do think they will make it. Timber Creek: Wow has this group improved. Although im not the biggest fan of the show i still think they are incredible. If they do advance this will be the first time ever for them and will be making history once again. i really would love to see this program successed as well as the horn line is quite beautiful. LD Bell: Okay in the beginning of the season when i first saw they show i honestly hated it and the bagpipes nut it has grown on me. The guard work is beautiful and although i dont like the stage in the front due to it being really loud and when i watch i feel like the guard members are gonna fall through i still love the sound and i do think they will advance and maybe they weill fix the loudness with the props but other than that i really do enjoy the show now that ive watched it a few time . 1st Keller: I mean come on winning heb contest . Medaling at boa dfw. This group always impresses me every year and they just keep getting better and better. still dont know what the show is about and i really dont like the guard uniforms. BUT i love the design although its very confusing. Love the musicality they are performing with and just love them in general. As well as keller won this area in 2016 as well and i know for a fact they will again because of how good they already are. Like i said in haltoms post keller usually starts slow and grows to be great. But this year they started great and are now on the way to be literally breathtaking. I also think this may be the year keller may medal at state and may atleast get top 5 at boa , if the continue to improve. Like i said these are my opinions but here is my final list 1. Keller 2. Bell 3. Haltom 4. Timber 5. Prosper 6. Waxa 7. Coppell 8. Duncanville 9. keller Central 10. Richland Quote

As I said those top 7 are all really close. The reason I put haltom high is because of what I’ve heard and how I think they can improve . I’m not underestimating anyone but I do think that if they improve that they can definitely be above those other groups. But I kinda just threw them in cause I do think they will advance but had all those groups realy close to each other . Quote

Maybe it has to do with the Area's "overseer"(?) or whatever they call it...do they set the location? I was surprised to hear that you said this year's music was the best you've ever heard from Haltom....they sound great but last year's opener still gives me chill bumps. Any way this goes, there are going to be some great (and I mean "great") bands missing out on State this year. As I said earlier, as of now, I wouldn't put Haltom, Richland or Coppell advancing State. Think about this....of these 11 bands, 5 (maybe 6) are going home. If you took any of those bands and dropped them in practically any other area, they're advancing and possibly finishing in the top 3 in their area. And I didn't include the Mansfield schools who finished ahead of Haltom last week (I just don't know enough about them). landofwake Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 Also I think you’re underestimating Duncanville. They are historically not a BOA band and do well at UIL. This year there are just too many bands in Area B that could advance to state and I think other than Keller, the other bands- Bell, TC, Waxahachie, Prosper, Coppell, Duncanville, Haltom will be be fighting for the remaining 4 (maybe 5) spots. It will really come down to their performances on that day. I wish all bands the best. Sad we can’t take more from this Area Quote

LostChoirGuy Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 I think the top 6 will be the same people as bandisdope. I cant see Coppell missing out. I think they sound way too good and are on a trajectory to do what they always do. Duncanville will put out the same quality as always. It will just be a question of if it will be enough to keep them qualifying for state with a deeper field. I dont think it will be enough this year. Bandisdope 1 Quote

I think they sound way too good and are on a trajectory to do what they always do. Duncanville will put out the same quality as always. I just think that this year there is gonna be a lot of head turns and suprises and that’s really what I want tbh . I’ll be at area so we will def see . Can’t wait . Def the best area to attend in Texas tbh Quote
principalagent Posted October 12, 2018 Posted October 12, 2018 Duncanville has had some hits and misses since Shine retired. They’ve made state finals just once out of the three cycles since he left. Coppell is still working its way through a director change and design changes as well since Mason retired and passed away. Bell is just a hard band to nail down. Lately it seems they’re solid early season and just hit a wall, be it UIL or BOA, by the end of the season. All three are still great bands, but for one reason or another have lost their dominance. The only 5A medalist that moved up this time around is Waxahachie. I’m not sure if I see state finals for them, but I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility. In a hypothetical situation, Dripping Springs and Cedar Park both could too, but I’m not quite convinced this year. In other years however, both could have made 6A state finals at the very least. And thanks for the correction on Cedar Park and Dripping Springs remaining in 5A! I do know that Prosper moved up to 6A this year. I admit I'd never even heard of Prosper before they got 7th place at the 5A SMC last year. And there seems to be a lot of buzz surrounding them here on txbands and HornRank. All in all, Area B seems to be one of the deepest in the state this year (along with Areas C, D, and H). Area B has like 3 or 4 too little finals spots and 3 or 4 too little state spots. Quote
Band_dad_of_2 Posted October 12, 2018 Posted October 12, 2018 Quote Has there been a decline in the former 5A powerhouses like Duncanville, LD Bell, and Coppell? Or have the smaller bands that moved up in the class restructuring just continued to improve past them? Is it reasonable to think that the 2017 5A medalists (Cedar Park, Dripping Springs, and Waxahachie) will have similar success in 6A this year? Yes.....to all of this. And maybe it's not a "decline" as much as it is all of the other bands are rising to the level of their competition. Bands in Coppell and Bell vicinity like Prosper, Haltom, Richland, Waxahachie, etc. are "stepping things up". Bell is Bell...Coppell is Coppell...they're always great. But they have been taken over by FloMo, Hebron, CTJ...those programs stepped it up to other-worldly levels and over-took Bell and even Marcus, to an extent. Quote
BandFriendzz Posted October 13, 2018 Posted October 13, 2018 I’m here at the trinity & haltom football game because I love me some football and both teams are really good and it’s a good game and I just watched halftime and I got some comments Trinity has improved so so much this year like not in a way to make finals against these bands but they really do sound great and I love the improvements. From watching haltom last week to now . So much has changed . New start for guard . They didn’t have props cause rain but it didn’t take away from it . The sound is so strong and visually they look great. Also timing wise which is what I saw as the problem last week was 75 percent better . And that’s just a hard show in general like paying attention closely without props it’s a harddd show. I say this genuinely but I wouldn’t count them out trust me . The improvements in 1 weeks is so high and I can’t imagine what it’s gonna be like in 2 full week for area and then 3 full weeks for boa and hopefully state. I’m really sad the contest for tomorrow is canceled cause it would’ve been a great opportunity to watch all those area b bands . Any who back to my game. Quote
LostChoirGuy Posted October 13, 2018 Posted October 13, 2018 I'm excited for Trinity to make the trip to Indianapolis this year. I agree that they seem really improved. 14th at BOA DFW over some really great groups is nothing to scoff at. Quote
