I did notice - and was shocked - with Round Rock's placing at the TCGC State Championships. They have been typically in the top 3 for quite a while with their JV and varsity. Last year the JV was 3rd with an 89 and their varsity was 2nd with an 82. This year they are down to one guard and they were 8th of 9 with a 75. I feel so bad for those kids.

Don't, this year was intentionally less competitive and more just a break from their usual schedule. They actually had a very enjoyable season. Not everything is numbers and placements in the thick of things.

Leander did the exact thing last year. The fall of '16 was so intense with BOA SA, 6A STATE and Grand Nats and so they drastically scaled back their 2017 Winterguard season after such a crazy fall. No JV squad last year, and the overall winterguard season was just far less intense in 2017. Round Rock seems to be doing the same thing this year after their crazy fall competition schedule and GN trip. Just giving the kids a bit of a breather winterguard season after the intense fall marching season. Leander and Round Rock share some of the same color guard staff so that's what I'm basing it on. :)

I'm watching the WGI Worlds and was so impressed just now with Avon.  No wonder they are the best in their division!  So talented.

It does make me wonder about something.  If WGI World Championships were held in Texas every year, would more of the Texas guards rise to the level of an Avon or a Carmel?  If it was just down the road every year, it seems to me like that would definitely have some bearing on how competitive our guards would be.

That just occurred to me this morning and it made me wonder...

Some minor surprises after World class prelims results. Both Carmel and Trumbull topped Avon -- Carmel by nearly a point. Stoneman Douglas topped Tarpon Springs, which is probably how I would have had it after the Southeast Regional, although that's not what happened.

Scores are close so far in Scholastic Open, with the surprising result of McNeil ahead of Eastlake. I saw McNeil at TCGC and thought that it was a well-made show that probably wasn't executed as well as it could have been on that particular day.

I haven't watched anything live from the WGI Championship yet, but there are some videos on YouTube already. I was able to watch Avon's, Trumbull's, and Shenendehowa's prelims performances that way, along with Carmel's performance at the Mid-East Regional from a couple weeks ago. Carmel is definitely my favorite of the bunch. It's just such a kooky, subversive show. I was laughing pretty much from start to finish, but I especially loved the moaning during the flag feature. That's pretty much what everyone does mentally during a beautiful flag feature anyway -- all that ooh-ing and ahh-ing -- so to hear it out loud just sort of underscored our sometimes absurd and exaggerated reactions to winter guard shows. On the whole, though, this show seems content with being a reflection of some raging Id, that part of our personality that, according to Wikipedia, is "the disorganized part of the personality structure that contains a human's basic, instinctual drives" and is "the only component of personality that is present from birth." From this perspective, the show title, Emerging, actually makes sense. Of course, those tubes that the girls literally emerge from also help, and serve to create some interesting ensemble visual moments as they roll them around while trapped inside of them. None of this would matter, of course, if it wasn't matched by the level of performance that we've come to expect from Carmel, which is to say the highest level. Carmel continues to astonish. This highly modern music is *SO* difficult to perform to, but they pull it off. And just compare this show to last year's championship show. It's completely different, but still outstanding. There's a real range to what they accomplish.

Avon came into this as the favorite, and I do very much like their show. I think I'll like it even more when I get to see the characters up close and personal during the final multi-cam. But if there's one thing that diminishes my enjoyment of the show a little bit, it's the feeling that I've seen this sort of sad circus show before. In fact, we get them just about every year at WGI. Of course, they're not typically as well-done as this one, but freshness goes a long way.

Pride of Cincinnati gave a much better performance than the last one I saw from them. It's a very elegant and serene show that reminds me of some of POC's shows from the early 2000s. Again, it's not the most original or interesting show I've seen from them, but Gaines' drill is as beautiful as ever, and the performers do a good job.

I loved it. And that music helps sell it. So beautiful. I remember hearing it for the first time in Castle's tribute to Sophie last fall. Just lovely.

I thought Avon had a rather rough run and Carmel a solid one. I didn't see Trumbul so I can't say they were better or worse than Avon. While I agree that circus shows are done very often, there's something about Avon's take on it that is so refreshing. I hope they can have some strong runs the next few days and take it home, but that's just my opinion. Carmel is growing on me. I appreciate it, and love the energy. Still don't care for parts of the soundtrack, but they can perform wonderfully. I don't know how they were over half a point ahead of the others. Maybe equipment? That was a VERY strong asset for them today. Interesting to see Paramount .1 over POC too. Lots of upsets. Like March madness all over again... :)

Super close scores in Independent World prelims. Top 4 scores: 94.9, 94.8, 94.7, and 94.0. CGT Dallas is in a very comfortable fourth place and is less than a point away from the top scoring group, Paramount. That's awesome. And congrats to Paramount. There might be a new champion on Saturday, if they can keep the other groups at bay.

Eastlake's final flag ensemble work was the best I've seen all day - very well executed and uniform. I will not forget that soon!
