You never know, I would have said the same last year, but cedar park walked away with the 2016 tmc title.

That's what is so interesting amongst the top 3 Leander ISD bands. We tend to move around in placements every competition and it's anybody's guess who will be the top scoring LISD band on any one day. However, Vandy is the only LISD band competing in the TMC this weekend AFAIK.

After attending a few contests

1: Vandegrift

2: Reagan

3: Hendrickson

4: Pflugerville

5: Lake Travis

6: New Braunfels

7: John Paul Stevens

8: Belton

9: Jack C. Hays

10: Georgetown

So I just ran into a dear friend in my local Wal-Mart who also happens to be a Rouse band momma. She told me that both Georgetown and Hays really surprised her this past weekend at the Vista Ridge marching competition and that Georgetown in particular had really stepped up their game! I'm looking forward to hopefully both of these bands being in finals Saturday evening so I can see what she's talking about.

I can vouch for this. I was an escort for the Vista Ridge Marching Contest and as I was watching Rouse warm-up, I heard Hays in the other warm up zone and I was completely shaken. Hays also won the 6A music caption over Westwood in prelims, so I can see both Hays and Georgetown (who has a VERY entertaining show) place anywhere in the middle of the pack!

Good to know! Now my interest is even more piqued. I like seeing these guys improving and being talked about in a positive light. Looking forward to hopefully seeing both on Saturday.

How crazy would it be if Hendrickson won?! I would totally love that. Of course it would only add to the conflict of trying to adequately predict San Antonio!

If Hendrickson won, the press area at San Antonio would be filled with empty coffee cups and scrap pieces of paper.

Personally, after watching their show I think Reagan will take TMC.

I kind of agree... Vandegrift is great, but their show didn't impact me as much as Reagan did in Conroe. I totally understand why VHS would win Music but I'll never understand how they beat Reagan in effect.

Also something to consider is that Vandegrift got feedback from BOA judges in Austin and seemsd to improve dramatically. Wouldn't be surprised at all if Reagan had the same improvement this week and pulled out a win at TMC

That is a question that I have - how valuable is that critical feedback, and assuming it is valuable, how quickly can it be acted upon? I last listened to a judges recording sometime in the last century, so has that feedback become more useful and actionable to improve shows?

My directors often talk about the feedback from judges and I know that we have often times tweaked or in some cases completely changed entire movements of a show based on what judges have said.

Something that might also come into play is consistency of judges. Looking it up, this event has two of the same judges as Conroe. My guess is that it both Vandegrift and Reagan are using the feedback from those two to plan their rehearsals this week. This could be put in the category of good for Vandegrift since both Nola Jones and Austin Greene had Vandegrift ahead last weekend, or good for Reagan if the feedback they got was as you said above, more "actionable"

With judge recordings and the score sheets, I think they're way more critical to improving for contests later in the season than they ever have been. They're typically pretty insightful and helpful. That's my take on it, at least.

Saw this after I responded. The same thing (changing movements based on judge comments) happens to us.

Interesting point about Vandegrift. I wonder if the directors are aware of a few of the judges being the same?

Yes.  I know that Vista Ridge completely renamed their show last year after BOA Austin and the judges feedback.  Their original name was Atomic Fiction and it was a very retro looking show if you guys remember.  (I loved it!).  After the judges comments that the show really didn't have anything to do with the theme, they renamed it "A Beautiful Tomorrow."

Talking to a few Vista students and watching the show develop was a wild ride through the season. Every time we spoke the show was totally different haha!

Jokes aside, the show was incredible. I loved it and totally thought it deserved higher placements :( too bad everyone can't be finalists.

I agree...it's just insane how competitive it is down here.  Vista would do really well in other parts of the country.

Do you remember in 2013 and 2014 when they had the violinist on the field at Vista?  Man, those were great shows!  I think 2014 may be my favorite of theirs, other than the fact that was before they had an actual color guard and they just used their dance team (with no flags or weapons).  It was called Danza de la Rosa and it was beautiful with that violin solo!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppoRYgqxlLw  Good stuff right there.

Wow. The logistics of having a violin on the field.... so much warping....

I love when bands use dance teams. It's always interesting for me to watch :)
