Area Postponements

C did this last year. It’s tough on parents for sure. Especially prop parents. Rockwall has a professional development day so at least kids wouldnt be missing a “school day”. But it’s still tough. Bands advancing to state would then be up against to wall to prep. Kind of wonder (though not only Area that faced) but did the lack of rest and prep factor into 4 amazing c teams not making state finals

Yes….it was like a “normal” day but on a Monday! Only real change is that C traditionally does full band retreat after finals but only did drum major due to being already a late Monday.  Made going to school Tuesday really hard!

luckily it still looks like most of the rain will be gone by 10 AM-ish. Maybe some will get pushed back from warmups being rained out but I'm praying the weather holds up for all areas this time! Crazy how it could be the 2nd year in a row.....

I have been worried about this for weeks! And I'm like it couldn't possibly two years in a row. Praying the forecast changes for the better over the next couple days!

Lots of school districts are moving their Friday Night Games to Thursday in this Area. Lots of people are thinking most of the rain will be Friday and taper off as the day goes on Saturday. But, if you push it back.....How late is too late. I can't remember the UIL late rule if anyone wants to chime in.

Good question. Would “think” a delay on Saturday would be better than a full day on Monday. 
 

Wonder if directors would prefer a “prelims” only, top 4 advance on Delayed Saturday or a full prelims and finals on Monday.

With as much talent as there is in this, there is no way in the world the directors would want a prelims only.

I am not a director but I think if you are at a competition all day long conditions can change and we all know most bands don't play as well during the day as they would during the night. I think also some of the draws for Area are crazy and some really really good bands are playing early and would love a chance to come back in the evening and play again.

Because I am completely job less. I am going to list some trade-offs  to areas being postponed 

 

Sunday.

Could run crazy late

Chance for no finals (most bands preform better in finals) (sidenote; is a big one) (my thoughts: preliminary rounds tend to be more focused on who makes finals where as finals is about placements. Smaller spectrum effect from. And so on) 

Damage to equipment + member sickness 

Being on busses for hours in the rain and then having to perform 

Lack of spectators 

Logistics are a bit harder, where do you keep the kids, how do you feed them. 

 

 

Monday. 

Logistics (transport + food) (sidenote: this is really big one) (my comments: this is about the only reason directors push to keep it same day...) 

Missing a day of school 

Being overly tired the next day. 

Getting the weekend to rest (this is a good thing)

Missing a day of school would still count as the student being there because of a school activity.

I’m hearing some rumblings that 4a area c could be moved to Monday but a decision will not be made until Friday morning-ish. Lots of BDs were grumbling about using the indoor since it simply would not work well for any band. Shallow sidelines, no place for judges, etc. I think it would be a good move but I’m glad I’m not a band director right now trying to plan logistics! What a headache.

It really doesn't work well for bands. Hopefully going forward they will just stop listing the indoor facility as an inclement weather option and plan an alternate day like the rest of the state. It doesn't make sense to me why they would want to use it. Lindale also loses out on a lot of money from ticket sales & concessions if it is moved indoors.

Does UIL not realize band booster have jobs and we need request time off and jobs have rules on how many days before the requested day you have to make the request.

I think it’s a damned if you do damned if you don’t situation. Texas weather is wild and unpredictable at times. I think area c needs to make a permanent change regarding their rain plans, but I do not think a decision can be made any earlier. It’s going to suck but it is what it is.

Area B 6A is looking like it's going to get rained out.

I think decisions are going to be aggressively made, even if Saturday starts to look "better".  Some bands had damaged equipment or lost out on a Finals run and I think the UIL is going to push to the make-up rain day and not repeat last year.  Most I think are Monday.

It's a tricky situation for them.  You go ahead and reschedule for let's say a Sunday or Monday but what happens if by Friday the rain is out of the forecast.  Then all the schools have to reschedule hotel rooms, take care of buses if they were using school buses, taking kids out of school on Monday and for some maybe they get in late on Monday night with school on Tuesday.  Ultimately you want it to run on Saturday so it's best to wait till the last minute to make your decision.  Being a band parent where we played Area a few hours away from the school you realized it was a risk.  Our area last year was miserable because it rained and was cold all day.  Thankfully they held out because they got it all done on Saturday.

if you can keep us updated please do. as a student in area c we have been talking and discussing this and are hoping it gets moved to monday 🙏

And as we saw with BOA twice this season, the performance field being indoors does not prevent weather delays.
