I went back and found the retirement announcement. I’m thinking now maybe he did fully retire but nothing on website has been updated. Maybe a last minute decision?

If he had a year round contract, it probably started/ended in August. Could always be health, family, or sanity too (working with school districts & parents).

I march with a school from area c and I wanted to hear y’all’s predictions for this competitive season. I also know football season has started, I wonder if there are any videos of the new shows.

here are the Van Alstyne and Paris shows so far.  This is the broadcast from the football game.  The bands start around 1 hour and 28 minutes

Thanks for sharing. Impressive that Paris is already working with props!

Both seem to have a decent amount on the field.

Not posting my video of Lumberton, however I think the band is stronger right now in the season than last year. Could definitely see them place around the 3rd to 6th range again this year, and before anyone jumps on my case like last year, Lumberton placed 4th in prelims and 6th in finals which was higher than what many people predicted so its definitely possible this year.

I think most I've seen seem to be ahead this year. It will probably still happen, but noone is wanting to see a Celina repeat (except for Celina). In person viewing does make a difference! I've seen football stream videos & then halftime specific videos from the same games. The sound difference is crazy! Streams are meant to filter out a certain range of sounds to muffle crowd noise. So some ranges seem missing and high stuff gets pushed up and makes it sound like some are blasting out of balance.

Somebody had a wild child at the Paris - VA game. He was louder than the band at the beginning. Haha. There were definitely some balance issues in that stream. Didn’t get much of the lower tones. It Totally depends on the quality of the camera, where the recorder is placed, and how the sound is mixed. Sometimes the crowd noise muffles the band even though you know the band is playing at full volumes.

I saw the Celina-Gunter broadcast and the sound was awesome, but the audio occasionally dropped out.

oh for sure seeing things in person makes a huge difference! As much as I like seeing Celina have the success they are having, I do want to see someone overtake them.

Their  HT run from yesterday is on YouTube… they look like a 5A band. I do enjoy the show more than recent stuff but they’ll be very hard to dethrone Imo

That is next level HD video etc. A good bit of schools just have Hudl camera gear. They had big stations all wanting to cover that game. Nice!

Yeah, watching that didn't make it look like they won't get a 4-peat before moving up to 5A...

Sound quality on VA v Paris stream is what I'm talking about. It sounds like putting a sock over the microphone. That kid was definitely a bit extra, lol.

there was also no power on the field for Van Alstyne's performance.  The power issued did get fixed for Paris' performance

They’re definitely looking good and seem to have a lot on the field. I like the theme; it’s unique. Excited to see what props they come up with. Everyone is gunning for them, though. I still think it is going to be a tight run all the way through state finals. I’ll get to see several of the top players in a few weeks in Melissa. I don’t feel like I can make too many judgement calls based on the videos I’ve seen so far. Celina definitely had the best video thanks to WFAA haha

I know it is still early in the season but I did want to make some early predictions.

1st Celina: Impressive Early Season, could 4-peat.

2nd Sulphur Springs: lots of show on the field already! could possibly medal this year.

3rd North Lamar: They are slowly but surely coming back

4th Bridge City: Haven’t seen them yet but they should stay pretty consistent with placement.

5th Lumberton: Same as Bridge City

6th Farmersville: Show theme is fun but not sure how judges would score it.

7th Canton: Comeback season.

8th Van Alstyne: Could possibly be placed higher but here for now.

9th Paris: Stronger than last year. Could see them higher as well.

10th Pleasant Grove: Not sure if they can hold their state placement this year. Outstanding program just not sure how they’re going to place.

11th Pine Tree: Show theme is better than last year, they look great so far.

12th Community: This could honestly go to any other band in the 9th-16th range but I think community stands here for now.

I think this list and reasons are solid. I think Canton jumps a bit here maybe 4th or 5th. The show is just better this year. I think they reclaim the visual dominance.
If the cleanness of NL right now carries to the rest of their show they may beat out SS. They played Canton last Friday and I heard that they are really good. Still haven’t seen it since the live stream opening week. And it’s hard to tell from the live stream this week bc it’s from our side but the feet look really clean and they march very well.

I would love to see NL top SS.

All the bands seem to be doing really good early season. This year will probably be closer than last as I see bands following and funneling towards similar show designs and trends. Farmersville is also looking pretty decent as of right now. They had 4 parts on the field and musically are spunding pretty decent. They aren't too far from the rest of the bands as of right now.

SS clean up a lot in the last week. I like the show. They are big and loud. I think it will come down to if they can clean better than NL. Farmersville was a pleasant surprise last year but I don’t think they are in the same categories as the top 3. I would love to see them beat the Lumberton Bridge city bands. I haven’t seen any videos of them.

I was able to record the prelim performances for the 4A Area C bands (besides Canton I left at the lunch break) that were at the Melissa Director’s Assistant Marching Showcase Today

North Lamar

Sulphur Springs

Farmersville

Celina

The area c 4a bands at Melissa were ranked:

1. Celina (10th prelims/finals)

2. Sulphur (11th prelims/finals - about 10 pts behind in prelims I think)

3. North Lamar 19th

4. Farmersville 20th

5. Canton 22nd

so, based on this preliminary contest, no real shockers or changes. We will see how the season progresses!

Camera question. Was your sound normalization setting enabled (by default setting) or disabled? Some bands seemed lacking dynamics in videos, but if that setting was left on, I know it kind of cancels some of that out.
