It USED to work that way but the rule was updated to that all 1’s at region counted towards state qualifier slots. Non-varsity bands confuse this somewhat but otherwise, 5A area H is taking 5 bands to state this year. Strong chance that 3 of them will be in state finals.

That would never happen for those bands in this Area. Until perhaps some turn into a 6A school and move into that category. I wonder which Leader ISD school is the closest to becoming a 6A? Perhaps Leander and Cedar Park? I know in this AREA H, Medina Valley moved from being at 5A last year to becoming a 6A this year. Maybe then an SA or CC school could squeeze into a state spot in finals! 🤔

Rouse was set to be 6A in a few years before some realignment shenanigans that I don’t know much about.

Cedar Park is designed to stay perpetually 5A. Leander is always on the cusp but they’ve treaded closer to 5A in recent years.

You're right that CP was supposed to stay 5A, but the most recent LISD re-districting added portions of 2 additional middle schools to CP, plus all of CP Middle.  The freshman class is huge and this should continue.  So I think in 2 years it's likely that CP will move up to 6A. 

Really looking forward to Area competition on Saturday, my back is ready for schlepping props and equipment.  At least this year it's at Gupton so an easy Saturday morning call time, even though CP is going early in the 4th slot.

Rezoning was done to balance this out across the schools. There will be a temporary bump in some here and there but that is to offset an upcoming decline in other feeder schools. Most LISD schools will settle out in 5A although Rouse and Glenn are projected to be 6A in a few cycles prior to a 7th LISD high school opening. Vandegrift is projecting a decline while the others remain mostly consistent, especially with a 7th school.

Yes, current cutoff for 6A is 2,275, so starting next year Cedar Park (and all other LISD schools) will be above that, and will remain above that for the next reclassification cycle for 2026-2028.  If the largest school populations increase across the state, it's possible the cutoff for 6A will increase during the next reclassification because the state prefers to keep the number of schools within each classification fairly balanced.  If that lower bound increases across the state, then it's possible CP and a couple of the other LISD schools will remain 5A.

For reference it went up 50 students from the previous classification, the lower bound for 6A was formerly 2225 and is now 2275.  For the 2020-2022 classification 6A was 2220 and above, so it only went up 5 students from 2020/22 to 2022/24.

It doesn't matter how many actually perform at Area. The number advancing is purely off of those bands that receive a 1st division at the Region level.

Oh wow that's terrible, I feel so bad for all of the other kids at Flour Buff.

Not sure on the answer to your question, I was happy that the Area was going to send 5 this year, since last year it was only 4 and some deserving bands got left out.

even if veteran’s memorial doesnt show up im pretty sure it will still be 5 since it is based off of how many bands get a 1 at the region level

but either way that is so tragic for flour bluff. i feel so bad and it really sucks that such a minor thing can get you disqualified but uil rules are rules.

not the same predicament but in other regions there are like 20-22 bands in prelims but 5 make state due to military bands counting towards to overall count, i would think that’s a similar case here with veteran’s memorial but idk

they competed at boa san marcos this year
