They certainly have improved this year. Not sure if it's enough to make finals but I'd think they would be close.

UIL 4A State Marching Contest 2023 (November 1)

None of this is correct. All prelims and finals at Area are random draws, not result based. -

Most Non-UIL compeitions follow the top 1/2, bottom 1/2 format. Just not UIL yet -

As a band director, I can tell you that Area Finals is purely a random draw, not top 1/2, bottom 1/2. There is a discussion proposal presented to the UIL Marching Band Rules Advisory Committee for this to be considered in the future. Read about it here: https://www.uiltexas.org/files/music/UIL_MB_RAC_Spring_2023_Minutes.pdf -

One of the judges is a percussionist.

No shade, but what are your credentials for having a "sense of what a state-caliber band" is? I say we just let the bands do the talking and see what results we have come Saturday night at 11:00 PM

Klein Cain will be a nice competitor for Jordan and give them a run for their $ -
McNeil has had some clearly outstanding RESULTS this year. I didn't say they were clearly outstanding and deserved anything better than 9th at Area Finals. McNeil was 6th at TMC, ahead of Dripping Springs, Westlake, Leander, M&G Johnson. McNeil was 2nd at CapCity right behind Dripping Springs. I call those clearly outstanding RESULTS for a season.
-
Where does the 14 points come from? If you're talking about ordinals, McNeil had 41 ordinals and Churchill had 50. Judge side-by-side scoring was: McNeil/WCHS Judge 1 - 615/608 Judge 2 - 490/422 Judge 3 - 900/350 Judge 4 - 695/670 Judge 5 - 594/580 Just curious where the 14 points came from. I don't see it.
-
Both groups have had steady improvement. However, so have all of the additional finalists. Churchill and McNeil have been 8/9, 9/10, and 9/10 in the last 6A Area D Finals. Shooting up to the top this year is inaccurate. McNeil has had some clearly outstanding results this year.

it was actually .6
-
Churchill beat McNeil because of one visual judge that had them 7th. They were ahead of WCHS in music by 9 points.

UIL 4A State Marching Contest 2023 (November 1)

When was this adopted? Source? -
Great list! I wouldn’t discount LASA this year. What I saw and heard at Region 18 last week was quite good. Should be a finalist this year IMHO.

I understand what you're saying. Most of the bands in Area D 5A are between 100-180 kids on the field. Don't really know of any groups that are much bigger than that. That being said, Jackson Academy is a prime example of a really small band that has had huge successes at BOA Contests. Look them up, it's inspiring for sure!

MacArthur in 1984 and 1985 (back to back championships)
-
I assume you're talking about the USBands Austin Regional? Hays had the highest prelim score overall (88.3 to 2nd place Copperas Cove 87.5 and 3rd place McCallum 87.2). They were third in finals with an 89.65, McCallum with a 90.0, and Copperas Cove with a 90.6. McCallum is never easy to beat and Copperas Cove is leaps and bounds better than they have been in the past with the help of Zack Travis this year. Based on their score jump, they seemed to improve quite a bit the week between the USBands Ludwig-Musser Classic and the Austin Regional. They lost to Harlan by over 5 points at the Ludwig-Musser Classic and then bested them by over 5 points at the Austin Regional. Props to Copperas Cove!

Good Luck! March your best of the year!

Here's the schedule for the 2023 Area D 5A on Oct. 28th Area D 5A Schedule 2023.xlsx

That's because several 6A's moved down to 5A in the last realignment. Lots of bands in Region 8 as well as Hays, MacArthur and Smithson Valley in 12/18
-
That's right! NEISD has had 3 State Marching Band Championships. MacArthur in '84 and '85 and then CTJ in '20

Won BOA SA Regional in 1998, 1999 Never won a BOA SA Super Regional (highest was 2nd in 2004) Finalists in BOA SA Super Regional 2003-2011 & 2016

Churchill has never won State before. They were first in prelims in 2004 but moved down to 5th in finals.
