Yes, you are so right! They really need the folks holding the entrances while a band is playing! -

Side note: Everyone on the concourse behind the upper level needs to SHUT UP! I cannot believe the rudeness. People just having full conversations during entire shows. -

LISD (south) Festival of Bands

At the RRISD Festival on Monday (was my first time going to that event), they would have 1 HS band do their show and then the MS feeder bands for that school would join them on the field and both HS and MS bands would play 1 tune together. It was also really great and kept things moving quite nicely. It started at 7 and we were out of there about 8:30. -

I am so excited for this one! I debated over whether to go to this one or Bedford, but ultimately landed on this one because of the fun of the unpredictability! Aside from maybe 3-4 bands, I think this one is so up in the air with who makes finals with so many really good bands, but lots of unknowns! It's not terribly often that we have a contest where the bubble list is this much longer than the lock list. Plus, in over 20 years of going to marching band events, I've never been to this BOA. And, looking at the map orientation, it looks like Legacy Stadium home side faces east, so hoping there might be a little press box shade by mid-afternoon! -
Steering back to BOA Austin and performances.... I just gotta say... really love what Westwood and Cedar Ridge are doing this year! I was at the RRISD Festival of Bands last night and it reconfirmed how much I liked those 2. The crowd last night just ate up both shows. Also, Westwood's use of the Pines of Rome's Villa Borghese movement in their holiday-themed show is brilliant. That music just fits the holiday/wintry/whimsical theme perfectly and the kids are selling the heck out of it. So excited to see the further development of this show over the season.

VERRRY excited to see Vandy in person on Saturday. The ballad is super interesting and fresh! Also love that some of the technical bits of Marriage of Figaro are being shared by the brass.

Does anyone that went to the VR preview have any details for those of us (me) that foolishly made other plans last night and couldn’t make it? Pretty please? :-) -

Oh wow - realizing I tear up a lot during shows haha! - usually just happy tears because something is just so good or impactful. -The Colony 2000 - when the 'Ghost Train' 'arrives' and the props in the back are pushed together to complete the train. -Ronald Reagan 2002 - Journey of Man ballad -Ronald Reagan 2003 - Horkstow Grange ballad -Cedar Park 2006 - Fire of Eternal Glory ballad -Cedar Ridge 2013 - Moon River ballad -Cedar Park 2013 - from beginning of Romeo & Juliet closer to end when R&J 'ascend' together -Vandegrift 2013 - Journey through the Snow ballad -Leander 2014 - Over the Rainbow at the end of Color Study -Hebron 2014 - When Midnight Comes - the WHOLE SHOW -Flower Mound 2015 - Surreal, when they unfurled the 'this is not a marching band' sign at the end. -CTJ 2017 - Hallelujah trombone solo -Vandegrift 2017 - Sound of Silence alto flute solo and the exquisite release of the last chord in the ballad that rings forever -Vista Ridge 2018 - Closer -Keller 2018 with sustained chord at the end of the opener and the panels in the back changing from colors to tessellations, etc. -
All amazing! SCV and Boston Crusaders were my most favorite! SCVs trumpet soloist was out of this world! For me, the depth of sound and volume for Boston was just perfect. I loved the Goliath theme and the uniforms. Really, the top 5 were on a plane by themselves. Earlier in the day, I thought the Joan of arc show from Phantom Regiment was soooooo cool and intense and when they had the folks with mellos in 1 hand and trumpets in the other, switching back and forth -whoa!! And all the guards - jaw to floor on the diversity of crazy skills!

DELIGHTED to hear about these selections from Leander and Vandy. I did let out a yelp of delight when the Leander video confirmed Britney’s Toxic! I am beside myself! -
Grand Nationals 2018???
jmj replied to bingogooberman's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
All I know is that I vastly prefer what we’re doing here. I am nearly always entertained whether it’s at BOA SA or a local invitational with smaller bands. And I’m both generally entertained, plus awed by the complexity of drill/music/guard work, etc. And I think that is what we do SO WELL in Texas. The ability to enjoy a show on both levels: the entertaining/wow that was neat/conveyed XYZ emotion-level AS WELL AS the omg jaw-on-the-floor, did you hear that crazy woodwind run/see that amazing rifle toss/witness that incredible bass drum lick/see that super clean block rotation while the trumpets were double-tonguing-level from band after band after band. Plus, we just sound so darn good from 1st place to 35th place now. These days everyone is sounding pretty amazing and doing interesting things. It’s a great testament to music education here that that the levels of musicianship have risen to the heights we have in this state now. Lastly, it’s a great example of the depth here that we can send our INSANELY GOOD 16th-ranked band (at both BOA and UIL) and they earn a place in the top 11 at the nationals. Incredible job representing us, Prosper!! Keep doing what you’re doing, Texas! Because it’s incredible. -

Prosper!!! Yes! Go Team Texas!! -
Also, with Vista Ridge now the 6A champ and CP the reigning 5A champion, both of the largest class championships are now held by schools in the city of Cedar Park. Major congrats to Vandegrift and Leander for incredible seasons! So proud to be a resident of the Leander ISD community!

YES! It’s like something is missing from the announcements. They don’t have to do the whole “joining us from...” thing. But it would be great if they could add back the XYZ Band from XYZ, Texas part. It’s like when UIL standardized the script for region, area, and state they didn’t edit and realize they left out that part.

Keller was also simply incredible. Amazing, pleasing ensemble sound. Those long chords were truly stunning. I love the theme and their commitment to it. Whatever the results, this is my favorite show of the year.
