  20. Don't underestimate the amount of practice time available in Indy during Grand Nationals. It is indoors in the convention center (although some may go to other local venues), and many of the out of town bands utilize the available rooms heavily. In other words, the bands get plenty of practice time during the 3 or 4 days they are there. Some of that available time is during the "academic school day" on Thursday and Friday as well, so there are some twists and turns with the 8 hour rule for TX bands, since that only applies outside the "academic school day".
  21. Something you'll find here is that the focus is so much on the large school bands. That being said, the overall level of posting here is great! A couple years ago Russell County also received the small school award. Russell and Adair are bordering counties with some rivalry between them. Lafayette (2), Paul Lawrence Dunbar (2), North Hardin, and Harrison County have also been awarded from KY. A total of 8 awards for a relatively small state (I grew up and did marching band there too back in the 20th century).
  22. The last time there were 2 weeks between SA and GN was 2015. Hebron, The Woodlands, Round Rock, and Keller all made SA finals and GN finals that year so I would expect something similar in 2019 too. Keller Central was the fifth TX attendee that year, and missed finals at both contests (24th at SA and 22nd at GN).
  23. Will they remain in AA, or move up to AAA since they will have 10-12 next year? How large is the attendance there?
  24. In 2015 my wife and I went as spectators (she was actually working in Cincinnati at that time, so I flew there and we drove to Indy). In 2017 she was a heavily used volunteer (nurse), while I made sure she was fed and was her gopher during the trip. Was able to see some on Thursday and Friday, and large chunks of Saturday, but not as much as I wanted. We haven't decided yet on 2019, and she is considering helping on the Indy trip since there will be a new volunteer band nurse who won't know the ropes of that trip. Coordinating daily meds, dealing with the injuries during practice, and the waves of illness that sweeps through the 300+ kids is non-stop.
  25. From the official announcement on the TWHS Facebook page. It includes some information that I didn't know about the award, such as can only be given after a director has been with a program for at least 7 years, can only be given once under the same director. We are extremely excited and fortunate to announce that The Woodlands High School Band has been awarded the prestigious Sudler Shield for 2018! The Sudler Shield is an International Award recognizing high school, youth, and international marching bands of world class excellence. The award is sponsored by Louis and Virginia Sudler and is presented by its chairman, W. Dale Warren, the Senior Wind Band Conductor and Professor of Music in the University of Arkansas Department of Music. The purpose of the Sudler Shield is to establish and support international standards of excellence in musical performance, marching execution, choreography, and show design for high school, youth, or international marching bands. It also aims to identify, recognize, and honor outstanding high school, youth, and international marching bands who are at a world class level of excellence. Only one or two large high schools are selected each year from around the country and the world for this award. The Sudler Shield is considered to be the highest honor a marching band can receive. This is the second time The Woodlands has been a recipient; the first time in 2009 under the direction of Brett Johnson. A band program is only eligible for the award once a director has been presiding over the program for a minimum of seven years. Once a band program is awarded this honor, it cannot receive the award again under the same director. The requirements, pre-requisites and consistency of excellence from year to year that the Sudler Shield demands makes it incredibly rare for a band program to be named a recipient once, let alone twice! We are so proud of our dedicated and passionate students, our hard working staff, our incredibly supportive and willing parents and our campus and district administration for making this all possible. The award will be presented at a special event or concert later this school year by Mr. W. Dale Warren! We will be sure to share information about the presentation when details have been confirmed. GO WOODLANDS BAND!!!
