  1. This is a great answer. Anyone who watched DCI this summer knows how hot this topic was for them as well. I have mixed feelings about it, especially from where I sit (in the front I feel like all I hear is speaker). There's a great discussion about this from the Bluecoats...I found it pretty interesting anyway. MarchingRoundTableAmplificationPart1 MarchingRoundTableAmplificationPart2
  2. I'm dying at their Facebook page with the trapped judge "every band kid's dream"
  3. Everyone I was around loved Poteet! It was great. So much good stuff! And can I say Highland Park h o l y c o w can they play for a small group. Thought I was listening to a small drum corps. That is some crazy brass. You go guys! Dang!
  4. This was a great contest. So much across the board to be proud of. Lots of talent in 5A, it was a great day for band in Texas!
  5. Band parent or have kid in band- just the perfect description!!
  6. I love a dark horse! I think a lot of groups are really bringing it on this year. I don't think this is a fight just for silver or bronze. Some really polished groups are going to shine Wednesday night. Fun stuff!
  7. Roma is without question my favorite somewhat non-traditional (only because of the horns) to get into finals. I can't wait to see how high their music score is. Can't wait to hear them in the dome!
  8. I suspect both band and former band. They're a fun lively, sweet group of kids. We don't go there I just know a few.
  9. I was at a competition once with our pretty large congregated group. I had been speaking to a parent in front of me from another band about their group, kids, etc. So our kids enter the field and I tell him "I'm really sorry we're about to yell our chant it going to be very loud but I won't yell in your ear!" He said that's great asked what we yell and I told him. He stood up and yelled with us. Competition doesn't have to be divisive. This is about teaching kids many things beyond music. I. Love. Band.
  10. Anyone who has not heard Roma live is in for an absolute treat. I just can't believe the sound they generate. It's stunning, really. I also have them in the top ten somewhere- maybe even a medal, they sound too good not to be.
  11. http://www.uilmusicregion18.com/Area_D.html Go down to the 5A Band Schedule link. It's not extremely obvious, I had to go to the Region 18 website to find it.
  12. Contest schedule for Area D. Lots of fun groups, lots of fun shows. Lots of excitement from bands that may get chance for the first time ever at a state competition. State will be a fantastic competition, so many 5A groups all over the state have really stepped it up this year. 2017_AreaD_5A_Schedule_Final.pdf
  13. DS is not attending per their facebook. They've been locked in the bandhall since 6AM because their original time was 4PM, then 7:30PM so the redraw put Dripping into the 7AM slot tomorrow meant leaving at 3AM...so the directors passed.
  14. Performance order has been posted, hope that works: http://www.uilmusicregion18.com/pdfs/2015_AreaD_5A_Schedule_Final.pdf
  15. Connally and McCallum both sounded very nice last night. I think they will both be interesting add-ins to the area D "Prelims only" debacle that might occur. Performance order will be posted today, probably afternoon. My prediction is Leander plus any four (any four of DS, Vandy, VR, CP, Connally, and McCallum) that nail it right the first time somewhat independent of performance order and weather since with rain also can be extreme post-shower humidity and heat. I think Leander's music is enough and they are ahead enough to secure them a spot, even with a slightly sloppy performance and even without the flashier marching I'd like to see. I just really like the music, so I might be biased. And no I don't have a kid in Leander! Prelims only will make this interesting contest even more, well, interesting.
