2016 6A State Predictions
natertater21000 replied to snares's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
i'm curious to see how much focus Leander will actually put on state, they are only 6A by less then 50 people and they were not expecting to even have to attend this contest in the same week as grand nationals. A plus would be some extra practice in a dome if they make it though. As far as the top 10 go i just have no idea yet, but i will make one bold prediction. Coming off of their great nationals results Hebron will finally take the 6A title from Marcus. -
above are links to the movements Leander played for their spring preview of the fourth dimension. overall i gotta say i prefer this music to what was in choral works, and im absoulutely astonished that they managed to learn three movements of the show in four days. Really excited to see how this will turn out when it's all put together. Really digging that impact from cedar park as well, a texas caption sweep for 3A at grand nats between the two of them is very exciting to think about.

Well before when he was over here at Texas state his end game seemed to be higher education, but after seeing this I'm guessing he must have just missed teaching. As far as why rouse and not Glenn, it's very possible Glenn had already committed to the bowie director before Spicer decided for sure to go back to teaching.

The Best of the Best
natertater21000 replied to snares's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
Well for me all the wind parts go to Hebron... There are some honorable mentions though. Reagan's ensemble articulation across all sections. Cedar parks high woodwinds and trumpets. Leander and çtj's power in high and low brass combined. Vandegrift's drum line was impressive. Color guard goes to Reagan for me impressive as well as HUGE. As far as front ensemble I won't try I have no idea what I'm talking about there -
As far as getting the money for the trip, increasing band dues is probably the easiest and quickest thing to do. However some bands can't afford to do that due to the financial stability of the surrounding area. Leander for example could never ask for a 995$ band fee and still expect to have the same number of members. Some have trouble paying band dues as is which are around half of what would be asked to fund grand nats.

This is new and just starting but keep an eye out for Leander to continue using electronics, modern and minimalistic music and using an artist for some inspiration. Color study- Piet Mondrian, Choral works is influenced by another artist that I can't seem to remember at the moment. But I think the last two shows have seen Leander find what they like and what works for them and what they will continue to use as a template in the future. As well as only using sideline covers and back drops as props (they had the chorals this year as well) but I know Jeremy hunt thier drill writer prefers an emptier field.

Oh my gosh would you people stop, please stop assuming that just because a band has props and visuals beyond squating once during a loud note means they don't march and play better than bands that don't. Some to more extent in this group than others but the lisd schools are the ones I assume you are referring to and they all marched and played better than the other 6 bands they competed with, regardless of show design or theatric visual elements.

2015 BOA San Antonio Comments Thread

After this marching season I have thought of one request and wish for the dci season, SOMEONE PLEASE PLAY ARA BATUR -
good lord calm down I see I hit a nerve with you and also "which combined with their marching skills (they swept both rounds of the contest)". I'm simply stating what the numbers have already said, did Vandegrift beat wakeland in visual at BOA san Antonio? no they did not.I didn't say their drill was easy but that it was not as challenging or "showy" as other schools drill hence the lower scores all season aside from UIL. Also to undermine their hard work would be to say they were not clean, not that their drill was not the most difficult. The only person to blame for that would be the drill writer not the marchers. Vandegrift deserved every bit of that silver medal on Tuesday and I was not taking any credit away from them by saying what I said. you can disagree but the numbers all season long are what I based that post on so...

The reason why Vandegrift's marching gets more credit at UIL is due to the fact that at UIL difficulty of the drill is only very slightly taken into account, all that matters is how clean it is. There are also no field judges so that changes things a great deal. Those are the two leading reasons that wakeland beat both CP and Vandy in visual at San Antonio pre lims and it's why Leander was consistently far ahead in visual throughout the season.

While I can't personally speak for possible grudges, inconsistency of judging in uil in my opinion stems from the fact that they choose currently employed Texas high school band directors as judges. This means that the odds of a judge not already having an opinion on a bands show or worse yet having already seen it are very low. I'm sure no one would openly admit to this, but certain directors have preferences in terms of shows and how they teach thier bands and many of them don't seem to be able to let that go very well when judging a contest. This is why I'm glad boa chooses long retired heavily experienced people or people who teach out of state far removed from the bands they are judging. Allows for a cleaner read in my opinion

A few days late I know but just a few quick thoughts on San Antonio's top five this year. FLOWER MOUND. It brings me so much joy to see another ensemble have such an explosion of success. Very impressed with them and I'm sure they will be up there for the foreseeable future. REAGAN being as relatively young in the activity as I am I was never able to witness this program in its true prime but if it was anything like what I experienced on Saturday night... WOW the emotion and refinement and presence they had on the field was jaw dropping. Honestly thought they would take this one. CTJ, incredible difficulty and poise I'm used to seeing from them now, not my favorite in terms of design but holy cow can they sell a show. HEBRON I got exactly what I wanted from them, extremely impressive but just a small feeling like something was being held back. This is exactly what I would want to feel from a grand nats attendee two weeks out. I think they will crush at Indy... And of course can't help but mention BEST.SOLOIST. EVER. CEDAR PARK. So incredibly happy for them. This was by far my favorite show from them since 2008. It was fun, powerful, refined to an absurd level and very well designed. Can't wait to see what they and Leander bring to 3A at nationals next year. Texas caption sweep anyone?? -
Most likely ^^^
