A TIE?

Are there no tie breakers? That is ridiculous. How does one band win 2 caption awards in prelims AND finals and end with a tie. Every competition has tie breakers.

There might be something in the BOA adjudication handbook that addresses this. And, I mean, Dan Potter even clearly stated before he started announcing scores that the tiebreaker-by-higher-general-effect-score rule does not apply for breaking a tie for 1st place.

I don't understand how a tie could  happen after on school wins two caption awards..... that's weird to me....

One could slightly win 2 captions by .1 and then lose the other caption by .2

And yep, there is something (BOA Adjudication Handbook, pg. 34, Sec. 28):

"Any tie for an overall championship (Regional Champion, Super Regional Champion, Grand National Champion) will not be broken but rather be awarded to the two or more bands with a tie in their final score. The recap will display two Bands in 1st Place and no Bands in 2nd Place."

Thankfully, the championship isn't decided by the number of captions, but by the score.

Just look at Lawrence Central's Grand Nats finals win (dangit someone help me out, was that 2001?) when they won no captions and won the Eagle by .05pts

Edit: I just looked it up and yea, Carmel even won two captions, Music and GE and lost 96.4 to 96.35 to Lawrence Central.

The reason why BOA doesn't break ties for 1st place is because of what happened at Grand Nats Finals in 2016. Avon won music and visual, but Carmel won GE. Both of them scored a 97.45 in finals, but because Carmel won GE, they won the title. With a difference of 0 points.

That was my senior year and I remember the level of mixed responses from the crowd in Lucas Oil, and as we were leaving the stadium when it was announced. I'm sure BOA/Music For All wanted to avoid that controversy from ever happening again. IMO if both bands at the top finish with the same score, sharing the title is warranted. DCI has done it multiple times.

Also reminds me why BOA changed finals order from being completely random to bottom half scorers from prelims goes first, then the top half scorers from prelims goes second. Grand Nats 2015: Hebron wins semi's with the at the time highest score of all time, then gets drawn to perform first, then falls to 3rd place. (Also happened to Reagan in 2005 and The Woodlands in 2006)

wow huge congrats to flomo and hebron on tying for 1st place thats amazing! i remember last year a similar thing happened with mcneil and seven lakes where they tied for 15th allowing them both to go to finals, id imagine both situations had the kids feeling ecstatic!

It was indeed in 2001: https://www.hornrank.com/2001/11/grand-national-finals-nov-10-2001.html

Yeah, at the time, I suspected there was a reason he pointed that out, and so wasn't at all surprised when it happened.

Crazy night, lots of fun.  Congrats to Flobron and all the other competitors.

Time for bed.

Always like to compare how schools who advanced to state from other areas stack up against Area D schools.

Four Area D schools qualified for BOA finals...so only a handful of bands in other areas would have been able to qualify for state if they were in Area D.

Area D schools bolded

Schools that advanced to state underlined

Reagan: 6th
Cedar Ridge: 9th
Dripping Springs: 12th
M&G: 13th

Westlake: 16th

Bowie:17th
CTJ: 19th

Round Rock: 21st
Dawson: 24th
Timber Creek: 28th
College Park: 30th
Cinco Ranch: 31st

Westwood: 32nd
McNeil: 33rd

Cypress Woods: 35th
Churchill: 40th
Lake Travis 42nd
