4. Crown (brass)

5. PR

6. SCV/Mandis

7. Mandis/SCV

Obv it’s wayyyy too early to tell, 1-4, 5-7 and 8-11 could go anyway. I predict the battle for 12th to be insane, I would LOVE a tie so we get 13 finalist. For captions same thing, but yeah, can’t wait for this weekend!!

I haven't watched The Cavaliers yet, but I agree with your takes on Phantom and Crown.

Phantom, I think, is better than they were last year, even with the twisted, cobwebby curtains blowing in the wind tonight. I wish there was a little more to chew on intellectually, and having a clear theme might have helped with that, but aesthetically and emotionally it's there. It still manages to feel coherent, while taking you lots of places. So many cool moments, like when the curtains are spinning, and the marching members weave throughout them like threads in some giant sewing machine. The strong sense of visual balance is established right away,  too, with the gorgeous opening curvilinear and staging of the guard with the marchers throughout the impact.

Crown for me has a bit of a wild show right now, at least once it gets going. The opening, with its corny, theatrical procession of fabric -- of the portentous sort that we've seen so many times now -- had me checking my watch. But then Music for Prague throws us immediately into the fire, which is thrilling. Lots of gorgeous musicianship from the brass, especially the ballad crescendo, which is expected from them. There was one really cool follow-the-leader moment, and overall the drill is well-written, but not much wowed me. A lot, as you remarked, is familiar from the BOA world. Guard is really going for it, with room for growth in the execution. Really, the entire visual performance, from upstairs to downstairs, needs work, if they want to reclaim a top 4 spot this year. I was also struck by how their show felt more incoherent than Phantom's production, despite having a title and ostensibly a concept.

I would have given Phantom first place tonight, especially with the visual performance being a bit cleaner. I think Crown has a lot to work with, however, if they can figure out how to clean and shape it.

Hear me out, but the Cavs show this year is gonna be a real Dark Horse. Mark my words when I say they will do numbers this year

It’s possible, I’d say 8th-10th rn imo. I think them Blue Stars and Troopers will be neck and neck all season, but we’ll see if they can break top 7, but they’re definitely on the right track. But I do think they could be a dark horse.

Also, SCV was insane!! Being inside def helped but they are pumping out some serious sound!! I mean that book is insane, probably will be my favorite show from them since 18, I mean holy crap. They’re top 5 rn fs, could maybe just maybe medal if they really push for it, but yeah they’re back if they weren’t already.

This season is going to be insane. I think we might see changes all season till SA, but I mean wow everyone is locked in

I’m bias, let me have my moment. I have them and Troopers as my DCI dark horses

Oh, yeah. The Cavaliers are way better than they were last year, when they were quite, "Eek!" both in performance and design at the first show. The drill writing in particular is SO much better. They'll probably place 7th to 9th this year, although I haven't seen enough to really know.

I do wish the designers had done more to illustrate the Shape Shift theme, like have the members transform or something. As of right now, it seems like they could have slapped a number of names onto the show and been fine. Actually, maybe THAT'S the shape shift part. 😅

Oh the members will transform alright, and their marching power level will increase 50 fold...

Bluecoats were pretty strong ngl. It’s got some really cool moments, but I do kinda feel like it’s somewhat-ish, very ish to the same as last year from a high level design point. The props can be a little distracting at times, but I mean wow they sound great. Some cool visual moments as well. I’d be surprised if it wasn’t top 3, I think it’s beatable but they could def go back to back, maybe. Can’t wait to see how they do!

Thoughts from west coast:

Troopers: I love their sound. It’s definitely a little less story driven than the last 2 years but I’m kinda fine with that. The Mahler ending is wow. I think they’ll place around the same, but a good start to their season.

Colts: my favorite show of theirs post Covid fs! Brass book is very nice. They were imo the least polished of the night all around though I doubt the scores will reflect that. They def have a ton of back half season potential and I’m sure they’ll do well. It’s a very weird show and I love that. Will def be a fun one to see over the summer!

BD- My biggest gripe is that for not the most insane show, it’s moderately dirty. And no, I’m not a BD hater. I do love the brass features, and the visual moment at the end with the big circle is soooo cool! I have no idea how they’ll do but I do enjoy this show a good amount, some very cool stuff.

BAC- 5 BIG BOOOMS FOR BOSTON!! But in all seriousness I love this show, and it’s definitely got 1st place potential. I could see why some may disagree and I do see why. Some moments do flow as well as others, but when they clean that brass they will be ridiculous bc that book has so many notes omg. Guard is insane as well, obv. Ballad was just beautiful, I love how they split the props up. At this point, everyone is so strong I have no idea how is gonna do.

BK- my favorite BK show post Covid as well. I think this could get them into finals. Think they do a great job presenting the theme, and their brass is pretty solid. Also,‘hello Oboe. Great stuff.
