Props are not required and how much did the props that Broken Arrow have add to their show? was that a deciding factor? they sure looked expensive to build and even more to haul from OK.
there is much to be said about what a program spends on drill designers and other expense, so what do you propose to make this fair for everyone. do we limit the amount that a program can spend? do we ban props? do we require that every program write their own drill and arrange their own music? do we restrict the private lessons of their students? do we limit who they can bring in to consult?
Avon and Carmel spend next to nothing to go to Grand Nats and get to go every year. they sleep in their own beds every night for their super regional and grand nats. They do not have to deal with a 8 hour rule as it appears to be unique to Texas. That is my bigger concern.
Every program has the ability to fundraise to support their programs. I am not talking about just selling coupon books and/or mulch.
I have been doing fundraising outside of the student families for a number of years. the programs that claim that they struggle actually have the advantage as they can quickly qualify for grants. the schools that are in affluent areas do not, as every school and district is rated in a system that grant supporters want to see.
Your program may a high income demographic and fail to qualify for support, but have a huge transient population in the means of apartments/rentals that need support - especially if you are in an area that supports a military base - moving every 3 years.
Our program is considered by far too many to be an affluent program - but our cluster foundation provided more than $50K in support this season for marching scholarships for Grand Nats, for one of our middle schools to do Midwest clinic, for instruments at other schools. This funding was to support kids that would not otherwise be able to participate based on their financial situation.
If you think that the "affluent" schools do not have a free lunch program - you are mistaken.
I would welcome and be more interested in any thoughts on how we can ensure that every kid has the ability to perform in the marching arts - and I would support anything that is reasonable, but let's not assume that the only means it to provide for some is to take away from others.

I only watched some of the area videos, but based on those, no surprises for me. Really great work by everyone. It shows A LOT of dedication and perseverance.
Congrats to CTJ on a fabulous show, and your first state championship! As a few people mentioned, CTJ definitely had the closest thing to a "real" CTJ show this year. The others I think put forward very, very commendable efforts given the circumstances, but not quite what I would have expected in a normal year.
I think my favorite moment from the shows I watched was Hebron's ballad. I just remember saying out loud, "OMG! This is almost like a normal championship show!" Visually beautiful, musically beautiful. Well, maybe the quality of the sound wasn't quite as good as usual (and I think that maybe is why Hebron's music scores are a little bit lower than expected), but it was powerful nevertheless. It's impressive that they held on to those 1st place visual scores despite performing somewhat early.
Flower Mound, sort of the same for me. Like, parts of it, very powerful, other parts, a bit weaker. To be expected, really. As always, they fully commanded the space of the field, both musically and visually.
I had a really hard time getting a read on Marcus' show based on the available video. It did look closer to a typical show to me than most of the others. Like, very warm, calm, symphonic playing, which we expect from Marcus. The flags went up and down at the same time, too, which is always good! Hahaha. (I found my eyes drifting to the guards a lot in these shows, because they had more "typical" sort of work relative to the bands, in my opinion.) Maybe Marcus would have medaled if they had performed later, who knows.
TWHS in 2nd place in music, and all the music judges had them medaling, which is pretty atypical for TWHS at UIL. Good for them! Another fun show, although as others have noted, the visual was definitely watered down this year -- and a bit dirtier, too. But I feel like I can say that about most groups. A lot of the visual programs this year looked they came out of a time warp from the 90s. To be expected.
Can I go on about how 4 of the top half of the State contenders are from Houston? (Let's ignore the fact that central TX mostly didn't compete this year.) Pearland, I've got my eyes on you...

I would agree, rough time slot for Marcus. with Covid concerns, I wonder if they will be able to come the day before or if they will have a 5 hours bus ride at o dark thirty?
CTJ with late spot and being at home should be a real advantage, but I still think that the top 5 you have listed are the front runners but the placing could be very fluid with  no finals - so looking forward to this event - going to camp out at the dome for the entire day and get my band on

Fans are allowed - socially distanced and masks are required the entire time. Box Office will open 75 minutes prior to first band and doors will open 45 minutes prior to first performance to avoid congregating at the entry points. there is a extended performance time to allow for each band and the crew/chaperones to clear the field between performances.
Hope to see you there - look for my CTJ - BandDad84 mask

Coming into the season, we thought CTJ would be one of the ones to beat. They’ve been so consistently great in Texas that it was hard to not have them at the top of the pack going into Nationals. Despite maybe underplacing (but not underperforming!) a little bit this season, there’s absolutely nothing to be upset about. The show this year, The Circle of Life, is a fine sequel to their amazing 2017 production, and at times it makes nods to that show, as when they quote music from it in the opener. In true CTJ style, the show is scorchingly difficult, both musically and visually, but the execution is outstanding. Also, in true CTJ style, the show is consistently inventive, and buoyant, and eclectic, and crowd-pleasing. One thing that CTJ does consistently well is taking us on a truly diverse emotional journey. They allow themselves to be sad and happy and funny and serious, sometimes within the span of a few minutes. Their shows are always so full of life and character, and this production is no different. With The Circle of Life, they continue to push the boundaries of the sort of movement that a high school band can achieve. It’s not the cleanest show we’ve gotten from them, but it’s way more than enough. The musicianship from the soloists was just totally astounding. Totally delightful. When the show is over, you just want rise to your feet and throw babies onto the field.

spending the past few days working at the San Antonio SR - I have a new appreciation for the event from many angles.

I have attended the event since 2011, first as a parent, than as an alumni supporter, and now returning as a freshman parent that worked the event. I was amazed at the amount of work that goes into the event, I got to see the number of people and the overall hours that goes into the event, the number of people that are involved and the dedication. truly amazing. An to know that so many of them are doing it for the love of the art and dedication to the kids -

But what touched me the most was the 2 full days of raw emotion. Seeing the tears of kids who may of had a bad run, a senior coming off the field in prelims knowing it may be their last performance of their high school career, kids in pain from a broken finger from a rifle toss, a sprained ankle from a trip, or a dislocated knee after getting hit by a prop. More than 15,000 kids crossed the floor of the dome. it was amazing to see up close and personal and it truly touched me. In the stands or on Flomarching, you do not see the emotion that plays into the event.

We all talk on this site of who will place where in this event, and while the results this year where not to my liking, I have a new respect for all those that make the event possible and the kids that leave everything they have on that field regardless of where they place.

for those that would like to share in this love of the marching arts at this event and plan to attend next year - I plan to offer a chance for you to come to the dome, spend a few hours working and see the emotion first hand. I promise to feed you, get you into the event for free and provide you with whatever obnoxious colored t shirt we are offering next year.

congrats to every kid that crossed the field the past 2 days - as Dan Potter says - You are all winners!!

I don't brag too often about the school I support.  Heck, I don't post much at all.  But....I have to brag about CTJ.

This weekend, kids across the state have been auditioning for the opportunity to participate in the TMEA All-State Band in February.  CTJ had 16 kids make the All-State Band!!!
1 Eb Clarinet (1st in room) 1 Bb Clarinet 1 Alto Clarinet 1 Contrabass Clarinet (1st in room) 1 English Horn 1 Tenor Saxophone (1st in room) 1 Bari Saxophone (1st in room) 1 Trumpet 1 French Horn 2 Tenor Trombone 1 Bass Trombone (1st in room) 2 Tuba (1 of them was 1st in room) We also had 2 additional band members make the All-State Jazz Band.  One in Alto Saxophone (1st chair) and one in Drumset (1st chair).

The CTJ record WAS 8 All-State Band Members.  The NEISD record WAS 11 All-State Band Members.

Pretty amazing achievement!  Very proud of these kiddos and this program.
