He's from Friendswood if you look back at his other posts. And newwave, I don't care if you use proper grammar down to the last comma, but please read over what you write before you post so it at least makes sense. That's all i ask for... -
BOA 2011 Fall Schedule
mellopwn1 replied to Clarinot's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
To be a "lock" in my mind, a band has to consistently prove that without a doubt in my mind that they are capable of placing in finals on a consistent and regular basis. In all likelihood, Brazoswood, Friendswood, and WC will probably make finals, but stranger things have happened. There are tons of bands fighting for those bottom spots and I don't think any of us can say NOW, without knowing anything about this season's bands, that those other programs won't beat out Friendswood, a band that missed finals last year. Don't be offended; just prove us wrong -
I'm really no expert here...concert programs are nowhere near as exposed as marching programs in that you almost never get to hear them unless you are somehow connected to that school. I can't really say for sure McCullough will win because I'm not the person judging them. Many of the 3C bands have placed in the top 7 of the Honor Band process previously, so all of them are very good. Just glancing at past results, Westbrook and Rice would be safe guesses, but then again Fort Settlement and Howard are usually up there, too. I could just arbitrarily pick two schools, but it doesn't really mean anything because I've never heard any of them except a select few.

So now that all the Area listenings have been completed and results posted, I took the liberty of compiling this list of all the state finalists categorized by classification and included their repertoire. While this isn't a big "5A" year with all of our favorite marching bands in competition, there are some fantastic concert bands that are going to be facing off at the Texas Bandmaster's Convention next month. Take a look a the list and make a guess as to who you think might come out on top. My Predictions: 4a: Wylie Hs (Great repertoire...depends how it was performed. Maybe Waxahachie or Cedar Park, though.) 3C: McCullough JH (I heard rumors that these guys were AMAZING...and after seeing what they played, I'm not surprised) 2A: Noooooo idea... (A disturbing amount of these bands got 2's and 3's at UIL) 2C: Coppell MS North (It's going to be ONE of the Coppells...) Class 4A Creekview HS – Region 24 – Area A Grand Galop Chromatique (Franz Liszt) Masquerade for Band (Persichetti) The Sorceror's Apprentice (Dukas/Patterson) Liberty Hs – Region 24 – Area A The Gum-Suckers March (Grainger/Rogers) Symphonic Metamorphosis (Mvt., I, II and III) (Hindemith/Wilson) Redline Tango (Mackey) Summit HS – Region 5 – Area B Who's Who in Navy Blue (Sousa/Byrne) Lincolnshire Posy (play at least five mvts) (Grainger) Rocky Point Holiday (Nelson) Southwest HS – Region 7 – Area B Manhattan Beach (Sousa) Lincolnshire Posy (play at least five mvts) (Grainger) Circus Overture (Schuman) Pearce HS – Region 3 – Area C The Boys of the Old Brigade (Chambers/Smith) Masquerade for Band (Persichetti) Lincolnshire Posy (Grainger/Fennell) Wylie HS – Region 25 – Area C Glory of the Yankee Navy (Sousa) Symphony No. 5 Finale (Shostakovich/Righter) Bells For Stowkowski (Daugherty) Waxahachie HS – Region 20 – Area D Solid Men to the Front (Sousa/Byrne) Variants on a Medieval Tune (Dello Joio) Symphony in Bb for Band (play at least one mvt) (Hindemith) Cedar Park HS – Region 26 – Area D The Boys of the Old Brigade (Chambers/Smith) Lincolnshire Posy (play at least five mvts) (Grainger) Redline Tango (Mackey) Dripping Springs HS – Region 18 – Area E The Glory Of The Yankee Navy (Sousa/Schissel) Postcard (Ticheli) Fantasies on a Theme by Haydn (Dello Joio) Hendrickson HS – Region 18 – Area E Easter Monday at the White House Lawn (Sousa) Aurora Awakes (Mackey) La Forza del Destino (Verdi) Vidor HS – Region 10 – Area F Lola Flores (Alfred Sadel & Terig Tucci/John Krance) Lincolnshire Posy (Percy Grainger) Awayday (Adam Gorb) Dawson HS – Region 17 – Area F The Planets, Opus 32 (play at least Jupiter) (Holst/Patterson) Variants on a Medieval Tune (Dello Joio) Who's Who In Navy Blue (Sousa/Byrne ) Victoria East HS – Region 14 – Area G The Gladiator March (Sousa) Lincolnshire Posy - Mvts. 2011 High School Schows

This is some really nice stuff...hope this turns out well for Pflugerville! -
Well, I don't really see it as fair. They let Marcus compete in the state marching contest every year even though they have won it three consecutive cycles. I realize that honor band is TMEA and marching is UIL, but I think that TMEA is wrong for limiting Friendswood from competing this year. The goal is to determine the best 4A Concert band in Texas, not the 2nd best (supposing that Friendswood is still on top). If they are truly the best, year after year, so be it. They won fair and square and certainly deserve to be recognized at the convention. That's just my opinion.

Cedar Park 4A Once More
mellopwn1 replied to Rocktapus512's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
So, are you guys just playing the crap out of it and marching or are you somehow actually doing a Mahler "theme"? Knowing CP it's probably the former and not the latter, but who knows....haha. You COULD be doing something funky...for instance, you start your show with Mahler 2, mvt. 1 "Resurrection," so maybe you bring Mahler back from the dead and then he goes on a murderous rampage across the marching field to gain revenge on those who butcher his masterpieces by not playing them in their original, orchestral form. Then you could have a member viciously fight Mahler to put an end to his rampage and ultimately kill Mahler. Then you could appropriately end the show with one of his funeral marches! THAT is a show I wouldn't mind seeing , although something tells me Wessels might be taking it in a different direction... -

This video is slightly better....the metronome is less prominent and you can hear the band more completely -

Who I think/want/have heard rumors of returning: Hebron/Berkner The Woodlands Bowie CTJ Marcus Spring Hebron OR Berkner, it's really a toss-up between the two. Maybe both? that would be so cool! Both have potential to do great. The Woodlands: Every other year since 1998 (Minus 2000, and consecutive 2006-2007). I think they are pretty much a sure shot for entering in 2011. Think we can save them a spot in finals, too. Bowie: 2006 & 2009, so maybe a three year rotation? I haven't really heard anything about them going, but I just really want them to. It was amazing their improvement from 2009-2010!!! Please...? haha. CTJ: Confirmed that they are going. I'm excited for them Marcus: Why would they NOT go?!?! It's a non-state year so they would basically be wasting their talent by ending the season at San Antonio. I also agree with all the buzz on the MFA Forums that they have potential to take it all if they do in fact make the trip. Spring: Don't think anybody could have really guessed this....but it sure is exciting. Here's a post from Balash on the MFA Forums Does that not sound like Spring to you?!?! After a 9 year break, could they really be returning? It sure seems that way to me. Unless you guys have any other groups that could fit that description. -
The Woodlands didn't actually go over 8 minutes, the clock just started about 30 seconds too early so they went over. I believe that was the case with Johnson too.

DFW Band breaking records!

I believe that the section between America the Beautiful and Salvation is an original composition by Don Hill. Then there are obviously the Simple Gifts and TAPS solos. -
Your Favorite BOA Nationals
mellopwn1 replied to Drummantx's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
I would hardly say they were merely blossoming! ConVergence ties for my favorite Bell show with The Quest, and, in my opinion, was their most complex and demanding show from them I have seen. It had it all. Five brilliant works performed with a world class ensemble sound, the awesome cymbal chicks (you have posted pictures of their ConVergence Cymbal kick. EPIC!!!), awesome tuba section/feature, and some memorable visuals. The only thing I loathe about them is the awful outdated uniforms they used to have. haha. Grey pants have never done a band good.... As for GN, 2002 & 2006 are my favorite from top to bottom. 2007 had probably my favorite last place show (Harrison, GA) 2010 my favorite semifinals performances (PCEP, Mason) 2004 & 2010 tie for my favorite Champion (Lawrence Central and Avon) -
They still have a cymbal line, but I don't know if they are all girls. They don't wear the awesome skirts anymore--just normal uniforms and shakos. :/
