State 2010
mellopwn1 replied to longhorn2190's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Okay. I LOVE The Woodlands, but something tells me this just isn't their year. On top of that, they have trouble getting their show to their exceptional level until very late in the season and who knows if they can do that by Nov. 2nd. On top of that, they have Bell, Marcus, Coppell, Duncanville, etc. To compete with. Maybe, but probably not. -

You should take initiative and put them up yourself if you're so concerned! -

They can think what they want and everyone else can agree, but it still doesn't mean I have to like it -

As far as I know, the only place that you can publicly view it is on the MFA Fan Network, which, based on your question, I assume you don't subscribe to. It really is worth it. You should subscribe. -

Ahhh, how I love Area Websites. .gif files bouncing up at you, rainbows of poorly formatted text; it's like going back in an internet time machine. -
According to their website, there are also two new assistant directors and a new guard director. After watching a few of the shows on the fan network today: I totally agree with whitewing though...it's definitely not the usual product. I LOVE IT though! I can't think of too many other bands that could pull off Pictures as well as them. I can't wait to see how they do later in the season at SA and State. SFA dazzles as usual with a fantastic Romeo & Juliet. The timing on the hard rhythmic sections was impeccable. I found it rather top heavy though. It seemed that all the depth of the chords was coming from the synth. They will do well in Indy and probably state too, I think. Cedar Park was, as tacky as it is to say, GENIUS. Their brass never fails to impress. I hope these guys can make finals in Indy. Vandegrift wasn't my favorite. I REALLY don't like Ballet for Martha, but they performed it well and marched well. I'm not putting down their hard work but I just don't enjoy their size, drill, or music selection. The execution was all there and showed in the score, as was shown in the scores. I hope to see great things from these guys in coming years, though!

Birdville Marching Contest
mellopwn1 replied to Euphonipwn's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
What I think he meant by saying that is that last year's Hebron won Honor Band, not this years. Those seniors have graduated, and others may have quit, and he was saying that maybe they wouldn't sound as good as last year because Hebron might not have the same strong players. At least that's what I got out of it. -
I honestly can't believe that Vandegrift placed THIRD in finals. Either they are amazing or its bad judging...I'll see when they put it up on the fan network. It seems like its probably the first one, though. Also, seems like The Woodlands isn't doing so hot this year. That's the lowest I've seen them in quite a few :/ They should just rename this regional "Stephen F. Austin and 9 Other Finalist Bands." They have won SO many times...

Stadium Wars
mellopwn1 replied to TxRaider13's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
This person’s got it exactly right. A dome is something prestigious, something larger than life, and something that you don’t experience every day. You walk into the Alamodome and this rush of excitement and thrill runs down your spine, and you are inspired to do your best. It isn’t some rinky-dink school district stadium, it is where the Spurs play, it is where they hold conventions; it’s real life. The reverb is positively terrifying when they first announce your band, but as soon as you hit that first chord, a wave of sublime delight envelops you and everyone else for those few precious moments. I would be outraged if they took State and the Super Regional out of the dome. By doing so, you would be depriving thousands of kids the experience of a lifetime. Once again, that’s just me. -
If I am not mistaken, 5 points of BOA Music captions count towards percussion. Jus' sayin'. I would also venture to say that color guard either directly or indirectly is factored into visual and visual GE, too. They are called an auxiliary for a reason. They are meant to enhance the perforance of the band but neither are or should be required under BOA. I barely pay attention to guards when watching a performance, unless they are truly outstanding. That's my paradigm though, and I guess others might have their own.

Oops! I just realized that my last post lacked a verb...haha. But those are some darn fine looking uniforms. I always applaud bands that are brave enough to wear white pants (Duncanville, Coppell, Old School Marian and LD Bell in certain years, etc.)! -

Did they get new uniforms or are talking about the old ones? I was always a fan of the old ones, but I'm just asking. -
Round Rock EVER outplacing Bowie or Cedar Park is really odd. As others have said, I think think this only happened because of the unorthodox scoring system. Cedar Park definitely doesn't have the best guard....haha. I don't think this means anything for next week though. They will for sure have a top 5 finish, most likely a top 3. They have some great music lined up (althoughthe ending to their first movement is so....awkward.) and definitely have the chops to play it. The only thing that might hold them back in the future might be their rather safe and uninspired drill. So...many....blocks...It's really clean though!

Crazy Results

While I am in no way putting Pflugerville's performance tonight down, I wish they hadn't played Equus. SO tired of that piece, although they played the heck out of it! But seriously...like the 2718492817th time I've heard a band do it. Cedar Park is playing it too this year...case and point. /end rant On topic, I also agree with the SFA example. One of my personal favorite upsets was when in 2006, Broken Arrow comes out of nowhere after 4th place in semis to win Grand Nationals over the favorite LD Bell and class champion The Woodlands, both performing their best and most dynamic shows to date. That was a good year for Marching Band.... -

This is all so interesting...haha. I was googling populations of Flower Mound and the Woodlands to make you sound more accurate and found that The Woodlands actually has a population of over 90,000 and Flower mound is only about 70,000...so I guess it kind of evens out. haha http://www.thewoodlandstx.com/questions/vi...p?question_id=7 http://www.idcide.com/citydata/tx/flower-mound.htm

Westlake Marching Festival

Bowie is doing the Music of Tchaikovsky this year. 1812 overture, etc. An early season video: http://www.statesman.com/sports/highschool...and-896984.html Are they doing BOA this year because I noticed they are missing from both The Woodlands and Arlington regionals...? -
I was completely unaware that this ever happened...I thought they just didnt make state that year. That reallly is sad...all that hard work for nothing. It must be a HUGE letdown for the seniors who are used to competing at multiple regionals every year to culminate their marching careers with one contest performance. HUGE. One thing though...since when do you have to participate in a Super Regional to be in Grand Nationals?!?!?!
-
Holy moley! So it's true? That's a LOT of money. haha. I think I might have to make the trip from Dallas down to their BOA just to see what the area looks like. I thought it was just your average suburb! I never understood why everyone always calls them snobs (which they aren't! they're really sweet!) until now...haha Thanks for the information though!
