  1. A sub set can be thought of as a "checkpoint" for a longer move. If a band is taking a giant form (Iike an arc or diag) a long way across the field, they may use sub sets to make it easier to hold the form together by giving the kids a visual aid. For example, a sub set might be noted as "Set 45A."
  2. Number of sets also has a lot to do with length of music/count structures. If bands have lots of 12 or 16 count moves, they are likely to have "fewer" sets compared to other schools who might only have 8 count moves. Overall, time ends up being around the same, it's just a different way of getting there!
  3. I find it simply amazing the amount of transformation that has happened in 4A over the past several years. The amount of bands in 4A that have either sprung up or have just flat out gotten better is staggering! 4A has always been competitive, but now.... it's just flat out ridiculous!!! Cannot wait to see this contest in a few weeks!
  4. First off, do not feel excluded or like this has only happened to you...I used to have the same problem! But my director sat me down and convinced me to switch to euphonium. BEST DECISION EVER, and I wish I had done it earlier than my junior year. Obviously it sounds like you really enjoy trumpet, so if that's the case, DON'T STOP! But on the chance that you are looking to "move on up", euphonium might not be a terrible option?!

  8. For me, the Xeno was a much better choice. I felt that it played "free-er" and had a better sound quality. I'd highly reccomend trying it out. Not sure if it will be the "perfect fit" for you, but it seems to work well for me
  9. A personal favorite of mine that we are playing this year is Ticheli's "Apollo Unleashed".
  10. Sorry! Didn't mean for it to come across like that. I hate making myself sound like that, and for this, I apologize.
  11. I'm very glad that this website is out there! I was a freshman last year and heard about it from an upperclassmen and quickly got interested, and this place taught me a ton about marching band! Thanks for the good work!
  12. lol, didn't even notice the date of the quote I commented on, OOPS! Little late I suppose lol. I tried out a Bach Strat, but, I just didn't like the feel of it as much. I love my Xeno and hate not being able to play it during marching practice
  13. Trumpet: Yamaha Xeno Mouthpice: Yamaha custom 16C4 (really wierd, I know...) Highest note: work in progress. got my braces off back in June so I'm having to retrain everything to get that range great again. Chair: 8th, Top Band All I've been doing to get it back up is long tones, slurs, bends, and anything else that tortures your chops lol. Also, I know its kind of late since your only a few months out from getting them off, but a great way to cheat around the pain of playing w/ braces was this mouth gaurd called the Morgan Bummper that just snapped onto the brackets. You can order it off of the internet just by googling it. At least it would get ya through the tense and painfull playing of marching band. It sure helped me! BTW: what contests is Timberview going to?
  14. I have no idea who actually picked out the music for last year, but they might have very well switched the people who actually choose the etudes. This is what happened to the trumpet etudes as well.
  15. Is it raining at all there?
  16. Thank you for the clarification Xenon! Sounds like a pretty cool show. It'll be interesting to see what they do with it.
