Results from Region 31 are in. No surprises, but here are the updated #'s:
21 with 1's:
Arlington, Cedar Hill, Lake Ridge, Legacy, Mansfield, Martin, Paschal, South Grand Prairie, Boswell, Keller Central, Chisholm Trail, Fossil Ridge, Keller, North Crowley, Timber Creek, Weatherford, Southlake Carroll, Coppell, Haltom, LD Bell, Trinity,
7 remaining bands certain to score 1 at Region:
Berkner
Lake Highlands
Highlands Park
Duncanville
Waxahachie
Richardson
JJ Pearce2 or more needed from these 5 to have 12 Area Finalists and 6 advance to State:
DeSoto (1-1-1 last year)
Nimitz (1-1-1)
MacArthur (2-1-1)
Irving (2-1-2)
Skyline (DQ'd)DeSoto and Nimitz will almost certainly get 1's again, so the chances of 30 total bands (or more) is high!
Let’s also not forget that Skyline earned all 1st division ratings from tough judges but was DQ’d due to a result of a Director action.
They very well could squeak out a 1 again. When they play at what they call “Uil volume” that band sounds and looks great.

Is the 8 min time limit only enforced at Region? I thought I had read somewhere that the time limit rule is a bit different at area (or was it state?). And to add on the confusion, also different at BOA?
I’ve never seen a penalty given out to a band at the Area or State level and there are plenty who have broken rules.
In regards to Wakeland’s situation, pointing fingers does no good but I will say I have been present for a UIL contest in which a major 6A Band had tech issues, started late but still got a 1 because the Band Director told the drum major to stop after the ballad, mid-performance.
Although it was awkward for the performers, they got off the field in time, got straight 1s and a heck of a story to tell.

I can see clements into to the top 4. Just need to clean visuals. They are gonna show that you dont need a drumline.
The Lack of Drumline isn’t as big of a problem as how they sound currently.

Looking at the Draw Order these are the most reasonable state spots:
1. Bridgeland (Clean)
2. Cypress Woods (Clean and Intriguing)
3. Jordan (Clean and Good Draw time)
4. Cy-Fair (Will perform First in Prelims and Finals)
5. Seven Lakes (Show will always be Dirty)
6. Tompkins (They Peak Late)

Something very similar happened to Winston Churchill last year, huge drop in placement. People from Churchill told me that it was because they had to keep adding parts to the show they just couldn’t clean, maybe a similar situation.
Dawson did the same exact show as they did last week but cleaned a bit.

In no order:
Shadow Creek
Pearland
Clear Brook
Clear Lake
SFA
Dawson
Clear Falls
Brazoswood
Dickinson
Clements? (No idea what to expect after their shockingly low boa conroe placement)
After seeing their show, lack of drumline, I would say it was surprising.

Gosh, I don't even know what my predictions for this event would look like. I don't feel like I've seen nearly enough of the bands to predict anything, or enough of their shows, either.
I just attempted to find videos on YouTube again for Pearland, Dawson, SFA, and Tompkins. Nothing!
Pearland's director changes could be scary, but they could also be a chance for amazing new beginnings, so we'll have to wait and see. They were the one other Houston group to make finals at SA last year, although they underplaced expectations at North Houston. Could they challenge for the top? I think the door is ever so slightly open for a challenger. But I also suspect it will be hard to overcome TWHS in content/GE and visual.
I’ve seen all 4.
Pearland is strong in visual but not as strong in Music as they have been.
Tompkins is about where they have been.
SFA and Dawson have staff from the 2008-2012ish era of SFA. They both sound very good but need time to clean visually.

Hey Y’all, I’m a Pearland insider and this is going to make y’all sad but Pearland is not going to BOA Grand Nationals in 2022 for a few reasons, the biggest being that due to Mr. Munoz’s sudden leave we only have an interim director of bands, Mr. Brown, and while he was with Cedar Park when they went to Indianapolis in 2016, because we do not have a set-in-stone director of bands there is no possible way to plan a trip like this, also in Pearland ISD you are only allowed to travel out-of-state every other year, once again confirming that we will not be attending. Do not worry we will be all around Texas next year I’m sure, just not in Indiana.
