tarpon world is great. actually i think i like the perf a little more than the design. kinda early to tell. newspaper show. timber creek was fab a couple weeks ago in A. that girl who does the catch under the grand battement, is that class appropriate?!! lol. don't think they're going to Dayton. -

def less dead air b/w the phrases w/ grand oaks, agreed. not sure whether it'll be promoted. steering committee worked in mysterious ways last yr. questionable how they saw it fit to promote jordan but not dobyns-bennett, unless db just happened to get way better at the very end of the season to win their class by 3 points. at least jordan seems like they could possibly have a comeback this season. glad to see that. -

vids from Morton Ranch are currently uploading to drive. Cy Woods to the end. ur welcome!! standout was Grand Oaks. will be surprised if they don't win WGI Houston. general imp is that it could place near the top at Dayton also. extra points for exploring the Black Sheep idea. one of my ideas for a show actually, but their's is def cuter lol. seems like the kind of show wgi will fall hard for. amazing performance too. Katy wasn't too far off of them imo, very different energy tho, 90s punk grunge skater whatever show. performers killed it. got tanked in movement a little. lotsa fun. loved the barbarian style ground hammering LOL. THUD THUD! it's like, you WILL pay attention to us. Cy woods still around where they were last yr, haven't missed a beat. will be back in National A next week probably lol. also thought 7 lakes and James e Taylor were strong in the regular A class, better than half of the ones in National A imo. open class was a bit of a cluster f b/w the top 3. thought clear brook's performers killed it but the show they've been given is not at their level right now, in terms of staging success and general aesthetic. kind of chasing last yr in terms of mood, too. prob not fully fleshed out yet. Bridgeland had by far the best show compositionally but they seemed to be overreaching a little w/ the skills, tho they've still got 2+ months to clean it. very layered and musical and dynamic however. Jordan was kinda b/w those two for me, maybe the best balance of design + performance. their opening wowed me, loved how they moved + the staging. very colorful too. -

been so verrry very busy, but got national a class thru world from Turner HS uploaded to the drive. twhs A: Glass, Concrete, and Stone. whatever that means lmao. quirky midtempo song, but dramatically also kinda inert, like where are the builds!! undeniable skills, some great ensemble moments. only about half a show, aesthetically also kinda bland right now, like a lotta black and gray, no costumes or flags tho. Pearland: Blue Moon. they cut up the black and yellow moons from their marching show, maybe they'll paint them blue later lol. they sit in the moons, rock back and forth in them, move them around, so on so forth. really cute and elegant show, more of a traditional guard soundtrack. classy stuff. no costumes, but seemed like a full show. great skills. twhs world: The Light We Cannot See. wondered what the relation to the novel All the Light We Cannot See was, but well... all the parallels i cannot see lol. verrry much a prepandemic twhs/code black style show, like arthouse, minimalist chamber music, has a strange poetry to it. floor looks liiike... i dunno... really dirty dishwater? LOL. it's the little white lights poking thru, reminds me of soap suds. no costumes or new flags yet. have some cylinders they stand on, roll around, whatever. person to person timing/uniformity issues, even at the start w/ the various duets across the floor, but it's done to mostly tempoless long tones so yeah. show is hard af, super tricky spinning and tossing sequences, very dynamic, never seem to do the same thing twice either. mvmnt is minimalist but still expressive, maybe could use even more motion to connect some of the events, like kinda has a weird stillness and emptiness after the line of double turn tosses w/ the illusion at the end w/ the one hand inverted catch. dramatically it's all like one long subtle build which i don't think works as well when you only have half the show done lol. like there wasn't a payoff yet. could see it being really goosebumpy when it's done tho. super lyrical flag writing w/ the gorgeous recycled sheer flags. they prob won't place lower than 4th at worlds again, too early to tell the ceiling. obvi none of the shows were like esp clean, wouldn't have expected that anyway. lotsa first show jitters methinks. several half catches and drops from all the guards i saw. judging was aight. mostly agreed. rankings at least were fine. only 1 wgi judge makes it kinda hard to compare. boooo! -

yah it was like 2007 or something, back when sytycd was popular, well maybe it still is, don't know, don't watch tv. wgi had an article on Michaels' class afterward and they quoted her as saying something like, they weren't as bad as i thought they'd be, which made me lol. damning w/ faint praise. -

on another note i think WGI should have Steven McRae do the day after class at Worlds. he seems a helluva lot nicer and humbler than Mia Michaels LOL. more talented also. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zl5FU3cRvAU -

wanna add one more priority to Karl's list for this season: MOVEMENT. suuuper duper thrilled to see Houston Ballet's production of Kenneth MacMillan's Mayerling this May. i want all those kids and experienced performers w/ spin accounts on Insta to be as excited about learning stuff like this as they are about learning the newest daredevil trick toss. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AQ6wSf6MjRM&pp=ygUJTWF5ZXJsaW5n maaaybe a little less PG-13 lol. but look at the technical command combined w/ the commitment to character, you feel the performers' lust tinged w/ self-destruction, even as they do the most ridiculously demanding things w/ their bodies lol. it's pure communication. even at the highest levels in IW there's a lot of room for growth here. opens new equipment avenues too. -

surprised they're not. much improvement this marching season. -
LOL. is this the 2023 BOA GN thread or a dumpster fire?? there was some discussion a couple pages back about how the 8 hr rule handicaps TX bands competitively when they compete against the best at Nats, whiiich it definitely does, assuuuming all that extra time is used productively, which it might not be lol. for example last season for WGI i accessed Avon's calendar out of curiosity and saw that for that particular week their world guard was rehearsing 17 hours. ofc the question is, do you want to rehearse 17 hours a week? dunno, lol. i think the life/band balance question is legitimate, tho out of staters seem to manage it okay. actually now that i think about it, i managed it too. during 2 of my 4 marching seasons we had concert band rehearsals in addition to marching rehearsals, to prep for a couple of international band clinics *wink wink*. sooo that was like an extra sectional during the week plus a lengthy Saturday or Sunday full band rehearsal every week. stressful af but i wouldn't have traded it for anything, gave me the opportunity to rehearse w/ ppl like Richard Crain, Matthew McInturf, whose kid played oboe in our band lol, Mr. Eddie Green (shudder, extra Mr. Green days, myyyy favorite), that fun passionate old Armenian guy (Begian, i thiiink was his name?), blah blah blah. also still somehow came out near the top of my class and aced 13 AP exams + the SAT/ACT, and two of those AP tests i self studied for w/o even taking the class. yes im bragging lol. buuuut it really depends on what the kid wants and what the teachers can tolerate. not everyone's the same.

just gonna bumpity bump this up. lookin forward to seein Marcus, Bridgeland, Reagan, Westlake, Friendswood, and FloMo, all the guards really but those ones stood out this marching season imo. -
i come back after eating and THESE are the results?!!! lol. i mean im super duper happy for twhs, was actually just eating w/ a longtime friend whom i love dearly and haven't seen in forever and who was also part of the band when we made Nat finals for the first time. so it's been good day for us... but theeeen i feel like visual ppl really threw their weight around here bc all the shows i was delighted by visually made it, even if musically i was more like, meh. at the expense of the ones that sounded sometimes a lot better. Hebron belongs in the top 3 w/ that music imo. hope to see them jump up tho it may come at tw's expense. my top 3 remain unchanged seeing the shows live, Carmel, Hebron, and TWHS in some order. must be close, verrrry close. u also have to wonder where Blue Springs is. not my fave but others are hot on it.
