  2. Wow. Now that one (Hutto) I will admit I didn't see coming.
  3. darn it why didn't I go with my gut. I thought McCallum would win Music (I would love to see the recaps when they get posted), Dripping would win marching, and originally with that thought wanted to put McCallum 1, but went with the hot hand in Dripping Springs and the history of both Dripping/Weiss and so changed my post to that. Boo. Outside of that I had Connally pegged as alternate, and flipped Georgetown/Seguin with Pflugerville. Congrats to McCallum on their Area Championship!! I think this puts them into contention for State Finals seeing how Dripping Springs and Weiss have been so strong as of late. But, as I said in the other Area thread, you never know. Can't wait for San Antonio!
  4. Doubtful. Area H 5A is nowhere near as stacked as Area H 6A. Cedar Park is legit and should/will be in finals, Rouse has a strong shot-I had Roma over them in 2017 but having seen them this year, they look/sound good, and will for sure be in the conversation. Outside of that the other two Area H 5A qualifiers I don't think will be in the State finals mix, IMO. But, you never know. As always the final round of all of this will be a fun one to watch!
  5. So looks like I had both Georgetown schools higher than anticipated. I was debating on flipping them with seguin and instead put Seguin in with the bastrops and floresville. Otherwise I was close having just missed Seguin. I would't doubt then that Georgetown/Floresville are the next ones out followed by Eastview and then the Basrops. Now just waiting for the finals results...
  6. Yay. Good for those guys then.
  7. ooh. Man. That sucks. Yeh, dinosaur rule does seem like an adequate description. UIL is definitely run by alot of older dudes whom frown upon the modern marching band productions. I would anticipate a change with UIL in the years to come as the older establishment is replaced with the next generation of band directors. Also have to consider though that UIL is trying to maintain a balance with the needs and resources of the 1A school to the needs of the 6A school.
  8. odd. You would think it wouldn't have gotten past the region level assuming they did the same there? And if they didn't, then they clearly are aware of that rule and that would seem like an odd error to allow happen here. Curious for further development on this.

  10. Saw them back in 2017 down in the valley and man I was impressed with them! They finished 18th at SMBC that year. Hope to to see them again in the dome in 2 weeks.
  11. Excited to see PSJA there after their first appearance to the 6A State Marching Contest last year.
  12. Late to this discussion but I'm sure that is what they were trying to argue, unsuccessfully unfortunately. I'm sure the issue they were trying to argue was that contest started their 5 minute timer before they were staged, or they were not notified by onfield personnel that they were clear to get on the field yet the timer was going already. I've actually seen this happen before and some bands finish scary close to that 8 minutes as a result. That staff is well seasoned and like everyone I'm sure had practiced numerous times in getting the timing down. Alot of the local contests will also have had a clock running to help bands in getting a UIL run in with timing in as well. That said, I'm sure they had the 8 minute show down and the issue was 100% not for a lack preparation. That band is run by too many good people for that to have the issue. So either there was something that was amiss at the contest (which is what the appeals process is for) or the contest hosts ran things correctly and they had some extraordinary out of the ordinary circumstances that occurred and they used the appeal to try and plead their case (as any director would, can't blame them for trying). As I posted in the Area G thread, it could have been a whole possibility of issues. Many bands have a preshow that beigns during the 5 minute set up time (they usually start it around the 1-2 minute mark) and they have it timed to start at a specific moment in that 5 minute time period. But that is reliant upon them staging on the field before the previous band correctly. Are all the props where they are supposed to be? Did the band after them have so many props or equipment it caused a pile up at the gate (this could be something to argue if that was the case)? Did the electronics all get plugged in correctly (which is huge since most preshows utilize electronics)? Were they late coming out of warm up? Maybe a prop broke and they got bogged down trying to fix it? Maybe their mixing board didn't start up correctly that got them bogged down? Who knows, so many things that could have caused them to maybe start that pre show with 1:10 seconds on the clock instead of the 1:30 seconds they had rehearsed. Many bands time that preshow stuff for maximum impact for that 45 second "The next band in Conference..." announcement or big impact chord right at the 8 minute mark so yeh it is crucial that all the pieces are set up correctly during the 5 minutes. Either way I wish there was another way to penalize a group instead of in a state year pretty much denying them a shot into the state finals. That seems a bit harsh. I don't know maybe they get docked their highest rating by a single judge, so a band that gets a 211 gets a 221, or in this case a 111 is a 211. They still get penalized, but it doesn't prevent them from advancing to the next round which is a much more severe punishment which seems like a consequence that far outweighs the infraction. On a separate historical note, it used to be that bands had 10 minutes to perform their show AND exit the field. The problem was that bands were playing 9:30+ shows and then sprinting off the field to beat that clock. UIL changed it to still 10 minutes but broken down into 8 minutes to play and 2 minutes to exit so you didn't have the mad dash to exit the field with 1 second on the clock anymore.
  13. Thought I remember hearing there was a push to move state to an every year format instead of the every other year format. Also I could be wrong here but also maybe something along the lines of what football does with multiple divisions within conferences. So maybe a possibility of 2 6A State Champs (Div I and Div II - based on school enrollment). Now I could be wrong about the 2nd part there, but Im pretty sure the every year thing is being considered at the state level. No decisions, just discussion and it would need to go before the superintendents (executive committee's) of each region for approval.
  14. Hmmm Pflugerville has been steadily increasing and I wouldn't consider them a contender, but then again I have not seen them this year so I'm going off what I saw last year and their history. They were 15th at the BOA Austin Regional out of 26 bands out of a heavy Central Texas field and 22nd at BOA Houston our of 34 bands, so slightly higher performance there if you calculate the placements as a percentage relative to the number of bands at the contest. However, one can argue that the field at Austin was much more stacked than Houston. Ha, we should have a FPI (Football Power Index in College Football) to consider strength of schedule, cause one can definitely say BOA Austin had a higher FPI than the Houston Regional. All this to say, they are unknown right now and could very well sneak in and take that number 3 spot. I wish they had attended the Vista Ridge contest to compare against Weiss, Dripping, LBJ, Connally, and Georgetown and we could have had a little Area D "likely" finals preview!
  15. Finals McCallum HS Weiss HS Dripping Springs Connally HS Georgetown HS LBJ High Pflugerville HS ---------------------- East View HS 1st one out --------------------- next group out Floresville HS/ Bastrop HS/ Cedar Creek/ Seguin Finals top 3 onto state (in order): 1. Weiss 2. Dripping Springs 3. McCallum I'm also gonna go out on a limb and say 5 judges will be close to accurate for top 3. However I can see top 3 being kind of tight. I see marching coming out as 1 Dripping 2 Weiss 3 Mac Musically is tougher and likely the deciding factor on final placement being as there are 3 judges and it will be interesting to see how they rank these 3: 1 Mac 2 Dripping 3 Weis Mac - They beat Dripping springs at Cap City first contest of the season, and Mac Band went on to Win Lost Pines sweeping all captions there (note that other Area D advancers there were LBJ & Crockett). So they will be confident going in undefeated on the season especially with the win over Dripping Springs early in the season. However, they haven't been to a contest since Lost Pines which was 3 weeks ago, other than Region marching contest. So no recent opportunity for more performance reps and critique from judges. Weiss - beat Dripping as well the week after Cap City at Vista Ridge, and won their class. Dripping however was higher visually with Weiss beating them in music. (other Area D advancers there were Connally, Georgetown & LBJ -placed in that order too). The following week they missed finals at TMC finishing 11th in a strong field of larger and more established schools. They too have been off since then (3 weeks ago) other than region marching contest. Dripping Springs- Only group here to have faced the other top 3 potential finishers having come in 2nd each time. However it was close and it was music performance that appeared to be the deciding factor. They took the visual caption at Vista Ridge in their class. They won visual/music in prelims at cap city the week before that, and this past Saturday they placed 8th at the Waco BOA Regional and won the visual caption there as well. Having finished 1st in prelims at the 2017 state marching contest only to end 2nd in finals, this is clearly a strong group having a little more performance experience and recent momentum under their belt coming into this. Be a fun one to watch over at the Pfield in Pflugerville.
  16. So then only 3 bands will advance to state.
  17. Region 12 Advancing Bands Alamo Heights HS Floresville High School Lockhart HS Seguin HS (1,2,1) Region 8 Advancing Bands Corsicana High School Still waiting in 18 to post results but I'd count on at least 6 of the 9 5A's advancing Travis is Non Varisty so can't advance Northeast (Used to be Reagan) likely will not Navarro (used to be Lanier) coin flip, they have been so close last 2 years Crockett should advance Cedar Creek will Bastrop will McAllum, LBJ, and Dripping Springs are locks to go on.
  18. Which then if UIL denied the appeal means that Roma did indeed have a an issue with timing. No one here is saying anything but I just want to say it would be unfair to blame the directors without knowing all the details here. Things happen sometimes...They have 5 minutes to get on the field before the 8 minute clock starts. If they had a pre-show then they had rehearsed at what time to begin that within the 5 minutes to ensure a smooth transition to the 8 minute start. It's possible they didn't get on correctly, or there was an electronics issue, or a prop caused a pile up as they were entering the field...who knows but anything could have led to a delay in getting their preshow started which means when the 8 minute clock started they were still performing their preshow which then caused them to go over their 8 minutes. Or. They were good during their 5 minutes and if they had no preshow, they were just late starting their actual show and the 8 minute clock was running... Or...they just took tempos to slow and that caused the show to run longer... I mean so many ways for things to go wrong and I'm sure they rehearsed all this and had the timing down but sometimes things just happen. If UIL denied the appeal then it appears their is evidence suggesting that the clock folks got it right in which case any of the scenarios above could have come into play. Still sucks and sad to see
  19. Whoa!? Am I seeing this correctly? Roma straight 2's at pigskin? Anyone know what happened? Also looks like 28 bands so 5 will be advancing to state this coming Satruday.
  20. Nice well done. I thought that is how you might have done it but before I ventured into fun math wanted to check to see if there was a list already out there. Alright. Thanks!
  21. Where did you get finals recaps from? I went to Hornrank but it seems as if those recaps have already been converted to BOA scores? Also in going through a similar process above I do find something interesting about the visual scores in prelims. Vis Per Ind TMC BOA Aus TMC score to BOA Cedar Park 22.5 15.2 15 Bowie 21.75 15.5 14.5 Leander 21 16.5 14 1st column is the TMC score, the 2nd is the BOA Austin Regional Finals score, and the 3rd column is the TMC score converted to a BOA score. Is it weird that in the 2 weeks since the Austin regional that Cedar Park drops .2 points, Bowie drops 1 point and Leander drops 2.5 points? (maybe I did my math wrong) Similarly in Visual Ensemble, Leander drops from 17.5 (BOA Atx) to 17.3 (TMC BOA score) and Cedar Park drops from 17 to 16.1? Other groups in these captions that were at both contests saw moderate gains but on a whole the average of the 5 finalists from both contests dropped in Visual Individual and had a net of no gain in Visual Ensemble. Now one can say that yes judges see things differently at different contests but this only occurred in the visual scores as the 5 finalists from both contests saw increases in their music and GE scores (as expected). Thoughts? I am curious to get a ahold of the finals recaps and see how things played out there as well.
  22. Re: points spread discussion. Something to consider is while these were judges from the BOA circuit they only had 1 Music GE judge as opposed to 2 as in a BOA regional. Also the weighting of the captions was different than in BOA. BOA : Music Performance 20% Visual Performance 20% GE 60%, (Music 40% and Visual 20%) so 60% music 40% visual or 60% GE and 40% on performance TMC: Music Performance 30% Visual Performance 30% GE 40% (Even weight on Music/Visual as these scores were averaged and not added as in BOA) so in essence 50% music and 50% visual or 40% GE and 60% on performance Not sure if/how that changes things as opposed to a BOA format and the larger point spreads that were at the TMC.
  23. Concerning the exit, when I left everyone was heading for that single exit on the south side. I just went the other way (entrance way) and that was open and better yet nobody was doing it! I got out in under 1 minute. Now I did leave after the last band so I don't know if this was still the case later.
