The Danpodcast - 2018 Cherry On BOA Waco
gmtb617 replied to Danpod's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
I can’t imagine what’s it feels like as a band student to be in a non-Houston part of Texas right now. Also, Hendrickson and Cedar Park embody what makes Texas Marching Bands so fantastic. The resilience to adversity from some of these programs is incredible. -

Still wish your school did more BOAs. Congrats on the 6A sweep. -
Katy Marching Invitational 2018

In addition to the wind, the sun was glaring directly at us due to the time of day. The sun was deadly to anyone who happened to be marching just behind the front hash. In prelims we left with uncertainty. In exhibition we felt great. -

Oh, you march with Clements?? Tell your directors to put you all in some BOA contests!! Your band would probably do really well in them! -
Last year, our band’s (7L) show designers decided to cut a movement from our show due to the time we lost from Harvey. It was a fast-paced, frantic, and fun arrangement of Danse Macabre, and it sucked not being able to perform it. So, our ballad closer was produced in order to compensate for the cut reducing show time. From my perspective, Houston bands as a whole really came together after the hurricane. Many Houston bands had surprisingly strong 2017 seasons despite the setbacks. (Pearland, Oak Ridge, Cy Fair, Clear Brook, etc.) Nonetheless, glad we (and Houston) don’t have to worry about 40+ inches of rain this year. Jesus.

I believe that this explanation alone can’t explain a 10 point drop in their score relative to Conroe 2017. Something about their prelims run must have been off, because I refuse to believe that their talent dipped that much in one year. This situation reminds me of their struggles at Conroe 2016, where they got 19th place, but rebounded to solidly make state later that season, scoring ahead of other fantastic programs at Area. Hopefully their 2018 situation will be similar to 2016 in that regard. I didn’t see their run yesterday, so if anyone who did catch it could fill me in that would be great.

2018 Friendswood Marching Festival

I’ll take a stab on it. 1. Pearland 2. SFA 3. North Shore 4. Dawson (Idk this program but it seems they’ve done well in the past) 5. Clear Brook 6. Oak Ridge 7. Waller 8. Clear Falls 9. Dickinson (May be off on this) 10. Clear Lake The top competitors are fairly close in terms of achievement level. Although this is my list, I’m hoping there will be an upset that will spell excitement for the future of the season. However, Pearland doing amazing will be just fine too. Also, SFA seems really solid. I saw then perform from the sidelines this past week. -

Songs you love to see in a program

Surprised no one has explicitly expressed agreement with this post until now. This would be goosebump-inducing if done right. Also, mvmt 3 from this same piece would be really interesting to put on the field as well. -
Does anyone know of band rehearsals being affected by the extreme heat across S/Central Texas right now? My school district (in the Houston area) has restricted outside events such as our outside rehearsal time to a max of 90 minutes multiple times this week already. Interested of any other vicinities experiencing these extremes, and also potential effects lost rehearsal time will have on bands going forward (Not like its for no good reason — health matters )

Agree. It seems that the way to analyze and (more importantly) stimulate growth in the BOA track is to simply...do more BOA. You see numerical growth in score increases over time, and you recieve direct input and feedback from BOA officials for each contest on a run where the band is in it to perform their best; nothing fabricated or superficial.

Ooofff, was really looking forward to seeing your show at Conroe, even if it would spell more crazy competition for us. Regardless, I hope I’ll be able to watch CTJ performances as much as I can in person. See you all at McAllen! -Seven Lakes

Ditto the OP from “Area I 2018”. Thoughts and/or predictions? It’s always interesting following the bands up here as they grow and develop.

Ditto the OP from “Area I 2018”. Thoughts and/or predictions? The fact that Area E isn’t as dense this year (quantity wise) will shake things up competitively for State contenders.

Hey guys! I know there’s already a thread on UIL Area contests, however I think I’d like to start a series of Area threads similar to those from 2016, with a thread focused on each Area. I’m hoping creating this thread will spark others to form threads on the Areas they care about the most. As for me, I care the most about Houston Areas since I’m from a band within this metro. Thoughts and/or predictions on Area I with the rezoning?

2018 BOA San Antonio?
gmtb617 replied to MadisonBandMan1's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Sure. The beauty of High School Band is that you only need one season to greatly shift the course, momentum, and public impact of your band. Case in point from a Houston perspective: Pearland 2017. -
2018 BOA San Antonio?

Well said. Though I will say by “different” you mean “increasingly cutthroat” -
I saw the heavy hitters on the 20th @ Tour of Champions. I agree that SCV had set themselves apart from the rest, despite all performances being incredible.

Where did you find this?

It generally seems to hold true that there’s an inverse relationship between football team quality and fine arts (specifically band) quality.

As in, “equal to or better than 2016” dangerous?
