Alamo
What a cool event. How have I not heard of this before? I love San Antonio! How was it, guys?!! It was a lot of fun. It will be on YouTube in a few days. Here is some information on the band festival. The 81st annual Battle of Flowers Band Festival will feature 5,000 area high school band students from 34 area high schools. The Band Festival was made an official part of Fiesta in 1935. This year's featured bands are Alamo Heights High School, Luthur Burbank High School and Earl Warren High School. Additional participating high schools: Alamo Heights, Antonian, Brackenridge, Central Catholic, Johnson, MacArthur, Warren, East Central, Edison, Fox Tech, Harlandale, Highlands, Kennedy, Stevens, Kenedy, Lanier, Bradeis, Burbank, Madison, Marion, McCollum, Memorial, Navarro, Nixon-Smiley, Holmes, Poteet, Poth, Reagan, Sam Houston, Somerset, South San, Southside, Southwest and SW Legacy Concluding the evening is an amazing sight -- more than 5,000 students will take to the field and join together in a massed band presentation performing a medley of songs, showcasing their music and color guards, in tandem with a fantastic fireworks finale. The purpose of the Band Festival is to encourage interest in the study of music by highlighting local high school bands in a unique venue of cooperation. The Band Festival is a joint venture between the Battle of Flowers Association and a committee of local band directors and music educators, who together create the annual music festival. CTJBandPops
What a cool event. How have I not heard of this before? I love San Antonio! How was it, guys?!! San Antonio Fiesta last for 2 weeks in April - the "Battle of the Flowers" parade is today - it has been around since 1891. it is a celebration to honor the heroes of the Alamo, Goliad and the battle of San Jacinto. during the 2 weeks of Fiesta there are many events across the city. in many ways, it is a Mardi Gras for families. there are many parades - the river parade (river walk) the "Battle of the Flowers" is today (about 600K attend) it is a school holiday in SA. Fiesta Flambeau is tomorrow - it is a night parade and all the bands wear lights on their hats/uniforms. the Bandfest, done last night, has been going on more that 80 years and is generally done at Alamo Stadium - the "rockpile" - the 35 plus bands march the track and stop in front of the crowd to perform/dance - 3 bands perform a halftime show. MadisonBandMan1
The festival and parade were a blast. Here is the link to the video showing the whole parade from today if you weren't there for yourself.. Madison was literally the caboose so if you fast forward to about 2:32:30 you will see our performance for the crowd. I wish the ksat booth was closer to the beginning of the parade so they can broadcast bands w:hen they have more energy. Most of the underclassmen were exhausted by the time we reached the booth, but they still went all out. I hope you like it. It was so cool to be a part of the mass band. You have no idea how hard it is to keep everyone together out on that field. It was so loud I could barely hear the drumline. It was cool to be in the very front row watching the crowd while we were waiting for the mass band, and to hear the herald trumpets doing there thing right next to us. I wish I could do it again, but we only do fiesta stuff every other year and I am a junior, so that's not going to happen. LeanderMomma
Wow. It was certainly a beautiful day for it too. What an amazing tradition! Some highlights I stopped the video for were... 33:30 Texas A&M Marching Band. Impressive for sure! 47:30 Queen of the Court of America the Beautiful float. Gorgeous long dress (made from flowers) float!! Followed closely by Thomas Jefferson HS band playing Uptown Funk. Good stuff! 49:30. Another amazing dress float. These things are just incredibly beautiful. 1.02:45. Another gorgeous float. Yeah, I’m a girl so these massive flowing dress floats really do it for me. 1.13:10 South San HS dinosaur float. VERY cool. Followed by the amazing Ronald Reagan HS band! Woo hoo! I Didn’t realize that not only did they do the Rose Parade last year, but they will also do the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade THIS year. Wow! 1.21:45. Claudia Taylor Johnson HS band followed by the CTJ cheer squad. Impressive group. Also really loved the CTJ “Wild For Wildlife” float. Very nicely done! 1.39:50. Another beautiful dress float followed immediately by the Earl Warren HS band. Love those gorgeous purple plumes! 1.44:20. You gotta check out the La Familia Cortez float. Impressive family and float! Need to try one of their restaurants next time I’m down there. This float is followed by Brandeis HS band playing one of my favorite songs by Chicago, “September.” Good stuff Brandeis. 1.59:30 May be my favorite dress float. The train on the third dress has a piano keyboard down the back of it. Stunning! This float is followed by the Harlandale HS band and they also have a really good float right after the band has passed by. 2.05:30. The highly entertaining Sam Houston HS band. Loved watching these guys! They were followed by a delicious looking HEB ice cream float. Mmmmm. 2.16:00 The JP Stevens HS band. I have a soft spot for this band (long story). They played Santana’s Oye Como Va, another personal favorite of mine. Great job Stevens! Evidently they won the People’s Choice award the night before at the band festival. 2.19:40 McCollom HS band. Very entertaining group. Loved their bright fiesta style plumes! 2.32:00. A very lovely butterfly float followed by the James Madison HS band rocking those fabulous orange plumes that I love and doing a super job playing Camila Cabello’s Havana. (You guys were fantastic Cody! Didn’t seem tired at all to me!) That was a very enjoyable parade. How lucky you guys in San Antonio are to experience this every year! LeanderMomma
Wow nice review! I'm from Brandeis (if you didn't know btw) and the parade was lots of fun. I was also just wondering what is your soft spot for Stevens HS? They are kinda are competition even though we beat them at area. Thanks! I really enjoyed watching the parade even if it was a YouTube video. Sometimes it is nicer to watch those things that way, though. You get close up camera shots and interesting information from the commentators. I remember how much I enjoyed marching in several parades every year back in Memphis when I was in high school, but the Fiesta celebration is just really amazing! You are lucky to be apart of it. Ok, my semi long story about Stevens. Since you asked. Back story first of all, because it factors in. My daughter was in the Leander band from 2013-2017. In 2013, at the very first BOA Austin ever, Leander got completely drenched in the rain just before or just as they were taking the field. The event was completely cancelled after that so Leander didn’t get to perform. In 2015, Leander was unable to perform at BOA San Antonio due to the tornadoes and flooding that occurred that Friday and Saturday. Weather had stopped us again. In 2016, at BOA Austin again, the rains and thunderstorms struck once again, just before Leander was scheduled to perform. But this time, JP Stevens was the band actually on the field when the deluge ensued. Leander was at the gate waiting to go on next. We parents sat in our cars for the next hour or two waiting to see if we would yet again be unable to compete due to weather, but my daughter told me that the Leander band was doing a bit of bonding with the kids from Stevens while they waited. And when the sun broke through the clouds, and the siren telling us that the lightning was gone had sounded, we were so excited to head back into the stadium to finish watching the contest. And my daughter told me that the Leander and Stevens band kids cheered each other on as they were the first two bands on after the storms had subsided. I thought that was really cool that they did that, and it was such a relief to be able to compete after the stuff Leander had been through, so yeah.... I have a soft spot for Stevens because of that experience between them and Leander. I’m kind of mushy like that.
