I see the reasoning for this to be 2 fold...1. History of what the trend has been in the past few years (for those that haven't seen all the bands this year) and 2. Some seasoned programs will have been through this rodeo before, making them have a slight advantage. I have been around the marching scene for a while now (went to a 5A school), but when I make my 4A predictions, I am basing on results from the year as well as the trends from the past...Such as systematically, North Lamar has a long standing trend of success, so even if there was an upcoming band that could easily dethrone them, I wouldn't be as aware of it until the actual day of the contest comes. Similarly, if memory serves me correctly, different competitions have had different outcomes between the three BC, Midlothian, and CH (despite some being BOA style). So some of these instances I predict looking at the big picture. Even prelims and finals area Area F had them ranked in a different order. Also, when I mention program history, some people have honestly just been to state more, so they have experience in how to handle the whole process. This is the same reason you will see Argyle placed above McKinney North in most peoples predictions (although McKinney North beat them in both prelims and finals at Area B.). This is because they dominated in 4A SMBC before being moved up to 5A, so they have a ton of experience in that regard. All 3 of these Area F bands are super talented, and honestly, as I have said in another thread, will probably come down to the runs and the judges preferences. Predictions are hard, and almost never fully accurate, which is why nobody has correctly predicted March Madness either

Typically the raw scores (aka what is not posted on the official UIL Area Results page at https://www.uiltexas.org/music/marching-band/area) are typically not published, but sometimes they are leaked. But if you’re just looking for a base comparison, you can look there… But different judges use different point systems so it’s hard to compare those regardless.

They just need to gerrymander FM, Marcus, and Hebron into different areas💀Those next three or so are all very good -

Does anyone who has seen the shows for Wiley/Prosper/McKinney/etc live have any insight to who has the edge for the 4 spot? -
Bands often contract original shows to be written by marching band composers/arrangers, but after that, typically a composer will either add it to their repository of show music that is able to be purchased or can be reused/edited in a different year if they have it in their backlog of charts they have already written. All depending on the band, rights, etc. I have heard an opener from when I was in school be played by one band or another every few years since that.

I took a minute to try to focus on what is going on this year, and this is what I have come up with. 1. Cedar Park 2. Wakeland 3. Rouse 4. Lone Star 5. Leander 6. Aledo 7. Hendrickson 8. Mckinney North 9. Midlothian 10. Argyle 11. Colleyville Heritage 12. Friendswood Bubble (Alphabetical Order): Burleson Centennial, Pieper, Richland, Roma Cedar Park once again has a breathtaking show, and I fully expect a 7th Championship to come home to that band this year. However, Wakeland, Rouse, and Lone Star, in my opinion are closer than ever. Lone Star had a run in Area B prelims that made me believe that they would dethrone Wakeland for the Area B Champion title, but in finals Wakeland had the edge. Also Rouse sounds and looks phenomenal, so they could very well be second again, or take the title. Leander, Aledo, and Hendrickson are interchangeable to me, and honestly it will come down to judge preference + each of these bands runs on the day of prelims/finals IMO. Mckinney North is a dark horse. They have a super fun show and an outstanding sound, but it will be interesting to see how the judges rank a show like theirs in relation to some of the other bands. Argyle was also SUPER close to Mckinney North at area, so this could be a "Battle of the Area B Bands". The Area F schools (Midlothian, Colleyville Heritage, and Burleson Centennial) have been battling each other all year with flip-flopping placements, so honestly, the finals bubble seems super fluid to me. 8-15 placements will be very cutthroat.

UIL 5A Area B 2024

Realistically very close… In prelims I would’ve taken Lone Star over Wakeland, but in finals the opposite. It seems to be a battle of runs. Interested to see how this pans out at state. -

Honestly, I'm enjoying the shows from both McKinney North and Reedy this year. I appreciate the risks being taken in both of those shows, and I really enjoy watching them. For Reedy its nice seeing how expressive that show is. Also, for north not really seeing the "redundancy" claim hold up, except for just being another show with jazz charts. Then again, I have always preferred the fun and story-driven types of shows over the more abstractly designed ones. -
