  1. Absolutely AMAZING show. The musical talent, the dancing, the glass flipping, when they break out the trench coats...wow
  2. I thought I remembered Marcus doing this one year when I was poring over smbc archives but I could be wrong. Edit: yes, Marcus did it in 2021. From 7 to 3. But you could argue that Marcus isn’t exactly a stranger to top half placements and that an up and coming band might not have the same ability to jump. And perhaps the low prelims placement in 2021 was due to some fluke, so it’s possibly not a good example of a band’s ability to jump.
  3. Can you explain what this means, please?
  4. I've been saying this when comparing Dallas and Austin bands to Houston bands. Of the perennial contenders, Pearland has it the worst - less than an hour from the coast. It's awful. Bridgeland, CyFair, TWHS are not much better off.
  5. I...I have a dreeeaamm...a dreeeaammm....where everyone STFU while the band plays and is respectful...
  6. Is it just me or has Pearland gotten smaller this year? Anyway, I'll confess that I didn't really get the show. When I heard they were doing Pines of Rome, I envisioned something completely different. Not that it is bad - just kind of the complete opposite of what I was thinking, visually and musically.
  7. Love it! Brimming with confidence and not too dirty at this point in the season. Weird stadium lighting though.
  8. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to see that. Pines of Rome is one of my favorite pieces, and Pearland is the perfect band to play it. They'll blow the roof off and look great doing it.
  9. CyFair beating Pearland. Possible, but quite unlikely.
  10. Because the state wants to encourage a geographically diverse representation of bands at UIL state. There's only so many bands that can be accommodated at UIL state, and to give a disproportionate share of those spots to a single area to the detriment of another area that may not have the same affluence and privileges as North Texas or hill country bands is unfair. Just as one example, the weather in August and September is hot in north Dallas and Austin, but the wet bulbs are worse in Houston, and that doesn't factor in the risk of tropical storms and hurricanes. They're trying to make it fair, and I salute them for it. PS, my comments aren't just for area B, they're for all areas where folks wonder why we can't take more bands to state.
  11. Where are yall seeing the Carmel show?
  12. Bridgeland is fast and highly technical. A lot of symmetry, difficult lines and grids, rotating and meshing at very high tempos. Music is dark, big minor chords. Is that uil or boa, I don’t know. Execution will make or break this year. I think they are aiming very high for grand nats. The difficulty of the show is significantly higher than last year.
  13. I'm an LCHS alum. Any details on the show?
  14. I have obsessively watched Vandy's show from last year because I loved it so much. And I note a lot of musical parallels between that show and this video. A lot of the "pa pa pa pa pa" articulation spots sound exactly the same as last year. I'm not saying that's good or bad, just interesting. They look very clean for this early in the year.
  15. There were also bands that won't be there this year (like Bridgeland) that were there last year. I think we'd need a full rundown of who will and won't be there compared to last year to determine whether there's a net gain or loss of open spots. (Of course, nothing is guaranteed and all spots are "open," but you know what I mean.)
  16. My money would be on Klein Cain, if anyone, from that block.
  17. Aren't these supposed to be a random draw? What are the chances that all of the heavyweights, minus CTJ (which still has an afternoon spot) and Pearland, would land in that last block?
  18. PS, anyone know what cy fairs show is? The theme?
  19. I wish we had something more concrete to base these predictions on than reputation. We need to start doing recon missions and posting videos here for analysis šŸ˜„
  20. Can't speak for other schools but as a Bridgeland parent I can say that the level of drill difficulty is a significant jump from the past few years and is squarely in the top tier. I also like the music this year compared to prior years - it is darker, a lot of big minor chords, a little reminiscent of last yr's Vandegrift musical selection. The show can probably get them first place anywhere - it'll come down to the execution.
  21. Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I did not mean to refer to Bridgeland as a "lowly" program; I meant that any program, even if it is lowly, deserves to go if they want to go. I can see how one might have read that to mean I think of Bridgeland as lowly, but that is certainly not the case (I am a BL parent and a big supporter). I read through your reply and I now better understand where you're coming from. Ultimately, I think it's the band program's decision, and if they want to spend what is admittedly a large sum of cash on a trip to Grand Nats when they perhaps aren't in a position to score well, that's their right. I suspect you would agree that it's their right, but you might consider it ill-advised. I would agree with you that it's ill-advised. As far as the semantics, it's a pet peeve of mine, but it matters. In the world of sports, a "championship" is typically a contest between the very best. They are *all* present. They all had to earn their way in. With Grand Nats, you have a smattering of heavy hitters which changes every year except for the local Indiana bands, a lot of lower bands that just signed up because they're local and they can, and a lot of greats that are not there because it's too expensive to go every year. I don't know if you're an NFL fan, but imagine a Super Bowl or NFL playoffs in the 2010s where the New England Patriots just weren't competing. Or a 1990s NBA playoffs where Michael Jordan's Bulls just sat out. Yeah, maybe Avon had a great show, but if Hebron, Vandegrift, Marcus, and whoever else weren't present, then who's to say Avon deserved #1? To me, it's hard to call it a true national championship unless every heavy hitter from across the country is present (which is mostly just Indiana, Florida, Texas, and a couple others). I know it isn't practical, and it will never happen.
  22. I don’t disagree that this is as close as we can get. I’m simply saying it isn’t a playoff system. Maybe we have differing definitions of the word ā€œchampionship.ā€
  23. I don’t know, a national competition? The point is that it’s an intentional misnomer for marketing purposes. Nobody wants to attend a ā€œnational competition that isn’t actually a championship,ā€ so they call it a national championship. But that ain’t what it is. National, yes, but not a championship. Anyone who wants to go can go.
  24. Nationals is nothing more than a marketing slogan. It’s not actually a national championship. The vast majority of bands attending are not hard hitters. Nothing wrong with a Texas band, even if it’s a lowly one, attending nationals.
