  1. I’m sure the extra ten bucks made jetliner feel something!
  2. Does anyone know the scoring rubric for this contest
  3. Definitely is. Nobody can quite explain what it means and the closest explanation is just how it makes the judge feel. Eye roll.
  4. I’m conflicted on seven lakes’ show. Unique and almost old timey in a way, really visually appealing to watch. But kind of a one trick pony with all of the grid formations.
  5. Just shows the difficulty in comparing across different contests, different judges, and in battle of Berry’s case, different rubrics. You’ll never convince me that a large panel of experienced boa judges would consistently put cyfair below 7L, Jordan, Cinco, etc. Cyfair beat the woodlands for the music caption—so are we to say that the bands outscoring cyfair on music at boa south hou would beat the woodlands in that caption? That’s hilarious. what’s happening is boa isn’t adequately training its judges for consistency. And I’d maybe understand if the scores were separated by fractions of a point, but that’s not the case, these are wild swings. This is on boa. They can’t just hire judges as contractors and throw them in there and trust them because of their pedigree or CV. And if boa is indeed training them, well, coulda fooled me. also remember that what happens at boa is hardly a predictor for UIL. Different animal.
  6. The inconsistency is getting out of control tbh. They need to put in adequate training so you don’t have rogue judges going off the rails.
  7. When you say designer heavy panel, what type of show do you think they favor? How do you see their background play out in judging?
  8. Judge Hagan was a significant outlier in this event. Judging art ain't easy.
  9. I'm actually going to take back what I said. I watched Bridgeland's and CyFair's videos back to back with fresh eyes this morning. I think CyFair's show is better designed for general effect (which is something Cy Fair usually does well with). There is better emotional, artistic, and intellectual engagement than our show, at least the portions of these shows we have seen to date. Another commenter, I think Rubisco, mentioned that Bridgeland's show is its usual happy go lucky vibe. I don't totally agree with that, as the last movement that was played last night takes on a very different tone than the happy go lucky stuff before it. But in terms of designing a truly artistic show that tries to connect with the audience, I think Cy Fair's design is simply better. Is that the kids' fault? No, but them's the breaks.
  10. Nice, reasoned analysis once again. This is all fair. I didn’t care for Cy Fair’s show. I thought it was highly reliant on props and non-musical gimmicks, for lack of a better word. Their Vanish show is still my favorite from recent years. Then again, I’m biased as a Bridgeland parent, and I’m old school and favor shows that are heavy on playing and marching. I put Bridgeland first (after TWHS, not that I saw their show, but I figured that they were going to take it anyway had they been in finals) and would have loved to see North Shore second — their old school approach with just Scheherazade and simultaneous marching and playing was endearing and well executed. Time to go shake my fist at the kids to get off my lawn. anyway, you win some, you lose some. Congratulations to Cy Fair and on to the next contest!
  11. I’ll be there as well! Getting ready now
  12. This isn’t the first comp. Last weekend kicked it off
  13. @ruben_f if you do this, I wouldn't mind a private message invite 😄
  14. Seems like a good analysis. I wish we had some kind of private database to watch everyone's videos so we're not going by word of mouth.
  15. Anyone predicting LCHS to make state needs to also specify which band that made state last year isn't gonna make it this year. 😆 As an LCHS alum I would love nothing more than to see these kids restore the school to its glory days.
  16. I thought so as well
  17. Sincere question, how is their comment throwing shade? Seemed like a simple comparison based on historical results.
  18. Nice in-depth analysis. The backfield screens are just solid props, but the props this year are quite pretty and go with the blue, aqua, water theme. The music is reminiscent of what I'd call "Disney magic." Whimsical, fun, articulate, some big chords, with a fourth movement that stands out as very different from the rest - big minor chords. There is so much happening on the field all at once - there's a big push for visual scores. I've been critical of the brass in recent years, but I am impressed at how improved they are. The sounds coming from the field are just much more beautiful than in years past.
  19. Nobody here is qualified, we’re all just amateurs pulling things out of our rears based on band prestige. Predict away
  20. Maybe it’s some meta level social commentary on how screens distract parents from their kids. Or how screens come between youth and their families. Lol.
  21. I went. Bridgeland performed at halftime but it's LCHS homecoming and I didn't stick around until the end to watch them. Will catch them at a contest. Too bad, I wanted to see them.
  22. A lot of park and bark
  23. None of those schools has a realistic chance of winning. Going by reputation and recent achievement first place would likely be the woodlands, but they’re not participating in finals, so the next most likely winner is Bridgeland, Cy fair and cy woods.
  24. Can someone clearly explain the prelim and finals performance order rules for area?
  25. Watched the Bridgeland parent preview. Not posting a video but I’ll describe what I saw as highly technical, fast. Controlled chaos. More technical than melodic music. Reminded me of Vandegrift’s music book last year though not quite so extreme in departing from traditional music. This was just a first impression of part of the show so who knows what it’ll look like later. I am excited!
