oh Leander, moon river, be still my heart again!! love the fun funky ending stuff too. so much infectious energy!! ok, i switched back to multi for this one. judging panel did in fact change!! Bruce Jones on individual vis i believe, another gray haired glasses guy, i may be mixing them all up, and music.... Kyle Weirich?? not sure about the music guys lol. ok i need to take a pot roast out of my instantpot now. it's been sitting in there.

vista has left them all speechless. im not actually watching right now, doing some make up time for work. i think it's funny they've brought in all the Indiana ppl to judge music here lol. also seeing Jay Kennedy again, ruh roh lol. isn't he the one who had FloMo not even making finals in Music GE in 2021? that was interesting!!! lol

some of those bigger shifts b/w BOA and UIL might honestly just have been judges disagreeing w/ each other too. happens a lot. looots more overlap in the language of the sheets than in past. biggest diff now is UIL giving each choir its own judge and putting most of those judges upstairs. BOA's indiv music judge is at field level and does all three for 10% of the score. also, points of consideration like "frequency/demand of movement while playing", "content with respect to challenge", and "simultaneous responsibilities" literally appear on every single sheet in UIL, for example in content/design all 3 of them appear making up about a 3rd of the "what" half of the sheet, whereas in BOA POCs like that are only explicitly mentioned in the performance captions and are absent in effect.

BRIDGELAND!!! this is true. different weightings for sure, but more similar than in past. actually i think the influx of dci/boa ppl is contributing to tw's somewhat increased success in UIL the past couple years relative to pre-system change when they always got 8th or whatever. that said BOA has some crucial differences even w/ the overlap. for example i think tw will be happy that BOA's individual music judge is on the field and can sample woodwinds during tutti moments, unlike the UIL judge lol.

UIL 6A 2023 State Finals

imma say the fact that they prob had the cleanest show visually based on watching area vids?? cleanest intervals/spacing, good control of timing, cleanest transitions, clear logical and musical transitions, best control of the form in motion, most balanced forms, dynamic, varied, cleanest and most advanced guard, plenty of difficulty in the drill, layered, rich vertical and horizontal orchestration, great projection of style, feet looking clean from upstairs. as to your guuuard question you need to look at the variety, range, and depth of the vocabulary. depth of talent too. does your guard have over 30 members literally running and spinning rifles at the same time before cleanly punctuating that phrase with a clean 30+ member rifle toss? are they blending the movement with the equipment or do they just park and do a basic short phrase? how long and dense are the spinning phrases? how much ambidexterity? are they working from all parts of the equipment? are they varying the height of the tosses, the release and catch points as well? are they doing body work under the toss? it's super easy to do the same basic toss over and over and ooover again. not impressive. how developed are the dynamic efforts of space, time, weight, and flow? is the guard's movement uniform and clean? is the equipment going up and down at the same time when you're looking at it from upstairs? is it pure chaos lol? those kinds of things. def you're not alone on these forums on the vis side of things!! im constantly baffled by ppl's takes on vis performance here LOL. many directors don't understand it either!! -
UIL 6A 2023 State Finals

well deserved 10th place for B-land!! musically and esp visually they're hangin w/ the best of em this year. puuuure elegance, beautiful and clean vis program. 8th place ens vis, yep yep that checks out. can't wait to see their guard in WGI. large and in charge. gonna slay, can feel it. twhs' 12th woodwind rank is yet another one of my early season predictions coming true, go figure. was raisin the alarms on that back in August. gotta have your ens woodwinds audible upstairs for more than 20 secs or whatever when you've got a ww judge up there! it's a band, not a drum corps! u could see they were nailed in ww content in prelims, guessin' same is true for finals. cost 'em 4th place. other than that their ranks were fine. 5th ens music, 1st ens vis, 6th design, well that one's lower than id have it but im guessing it was a music person, either that or the UIL content caption is more focused on simultaneous demand and difficulty than variety/artistry/flow/creativity. -
so it looks like we'll likely be seeing Hoskins in brass tomorrow, Brooks in perc. Davis and Fugett id guess in either ens music or design, Wessels in woodwinds?? not sure about that one. one of the vis judges from today should return but Miller will join him as a new judge in either ens or ind vis. sooo mostly a new panel.
-
oh how cool would that be. since twhs' administrators seem obsessed w/ crap like the Lone Star Cup, maybe the band could parlay their UIL success into getting their 4th band director position back LOL. kinda wonderin' what their woodwind content rank is gonna be like, not featured as much as Vandy's or Hebron's or many other bands', not full ensemble anyway. other rankings should be fine.

i mostly agree about the staging but they're def burying some of their most impressive tosses backfield this yr!! was just watching area from a diff angle, there's a front walkover that's quickly and cleanly performed backfield side 1 that i've NEVER noticed after multiple viewings of this performance lol. why is that not done at the end of the opener as part of a trick toss ripple front and center??? that's the perfect time to highlight the really impressive tosses i saw back in May!!! still haven't really seen most of em!!
-
def possibility. i should prob move Cedar Ridge to bubble, tho their show may translate better in BOA. they were the one i was thinking of earlier when i said one of my locks might just barely make finals, so them missing state wasn't like super duper surprising for me, just regular surprising lol. but again could see em do better here. kinda hoping they do, to end their season strong.
