The show is announced with :45 seconds remaining in the 5 minute setup. The drum major announcement is at :20 seconds remaining. Nothing is judged in the 5 minute setup. Judging starts at the 8 minute timer and the announcement times remain regardless of when the band starts.
I understand where you're coming from and you didn't call out the kids. I believe the reaction is primarily to the following statement which was pointed and negative toward the CTJ program:
Even if not the intent, this ends up coming off as a knock on the kids since it's the program as a whole and usage of the word "disgusted" is very negative. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the resources being used and how they manifest in the design of shows but it's going to be a more constructive conversation if it avoids the negativity.
Just to make sure everyone knows, those are not real grand pianos. Those are synthesizers cleverly dressed in props to look like real grand pianos.
I'm not getting into the larger issue discussed here as I think subsequent posts address it well but I do want to correct misinformation.
There was only 1 point difference between each of Cedar Park, Rouse, and Leander in finals at Area. Leander has consistently won in music at BOA Austin, TMC, and UIL Area finals and beat Rouse at TMC. The different scoring configuration and ratio may come into play. It will be tight at the top and interesting to see how it comes out. It should be entertaining regardless!
Balancing quality is a part of the equation but also keep in mind that the state population continues to grow significantly. More people means more students, more schools, more bands, more regions, areas, etc...
