  1. You and me both. Like they could get the last out to win the series, and I'll be like "are you sure that's it?" This team.
  2. Also, a reminder that if we give the forums the hug of death (aka a 503 error), the folks who run this site will have the results in the live blog: https://www.24liveblog.com/live/UaQuw
  3. Drum majors are out on the field now. I think we still have to recognize each band who competed before we get to the finals announcement. Might be a few minutes still.
  4. Last thing I'll say before we get finals announcements is a sincere congrats to everyone who marched here today. This is the first time this season I've had time to sit down and watch marching band, and all of you blew it out of the water! Everyone was fantastic. Congrats on your fantastic seasons no matter which 14 bands move on to finals.
  5. All I'll say is that I'm glad I'm not a judge. Getting 43 groups down to 14 in one shot feels like an impossible task. Really wouldn't be shocked by any surprises that come our way.
  6. Thankfully I am not a Cowboys fan. My dad's from Philly and converted me to being an Eagles fan at an early age ... and I am really thankful for that.
  7. I still have sports PTSD from Game 6 2011. Also, this bullpen does not inspire confidence. Also also, DFW sports outside the Mavs in 2011 have been quite painful. At least I have the state championships as a distraction this week.
  8. I've already made peace with the fact the Rangers are going to blow the World Series in the most embarrassing fashion possible. Will make it (hopefully) less painful when it inevitably happens. 2011 is still burned into my memory.
  9. Great job tonight, North Shore! Blue Knights 2019 is my favorite arrangement of "Hurt", but North Shore's arrangement is giving me seconds thoughts about that.
  10. Yeah, Dan Potter (current PA) and John Pollard tag team PA duties throughout the week. John got us started with the morning session. I assume he'll take the evening session.
  11. First off, this situation definitely sucks, and my heart goes out to the Waxahachie kids. But a rule is a rule, and it has to be enforced. Band directors know this. Since we're in football season as well, how is this any different than a kid committing an obvious penalty, like pass interference in the end zone, that effectively ends their season? And that happens a lot. I agree that the UIL should look at that rule (and frankly how their contests are scored entirely) in the offseason, but you have to enforce the rules that everyone is competing by. I guarantee that no UIL official wants to have to make that decision.
  12. Just took a peek at that score ... yikes. Yeah, I got a feeling North Shore is going to do that to a lot of teams this year.
  13. I completely forgot that Arlington Martin vs. Lake Travis is on ESPNU right now. Doubt they show the bands at the half, but it's a good game so far.
  14. takes a glance at the calendar Oh hey, it's Texas High School Football Time! Thursday kicks off the 2022 football season and 17 straight weeks of action while we wait for the competitive band season to start. Really interested to see how this season turns out. There are a lot of interesting storylines to follow this year. Does Westlake's dominance continue in 6A even after the retirement of Todd Dodge? Will anyone stop Galena Park North Shore (or do we get Duncanville vs. North Shore title game part four)? How does Highland Park do in 6A? How does Argyle fair moving up to 5A DII? Does Allen continue its free fall? Do we finally get an RGV team into the state semis of any classification this year? There's intrigue across the entire state. Closer to home, Summit catches a break being one of the biggest teams in 5A DII but got placed in Region II with defending champ South Oak Cliff and Lovejoy, one of which the Jaguars will have to face in the third round of the playoffs. Getting to a third-straight state semifinal game will be challenging, but this team has shocked me (in both good and bad ways) before. So we shall see. Summit faces cross-town "rival" Lake Ridge to open the season Friday. As for games to keep an eye on this week: Manvel vs. Shadow Creek will be the game on Bally Sports Southwest Friday night in a great match up of state ranked teams. South Oak Cliff vs. Duncanville ought to be a battle despite the difference in school size. We'll get to know a lot about each team after this game is done. Gilmer vs. Tyler Chapel Hill features a state ranked showdown in East Texas. San Antonio Brennan vs. Cibolo Steele closes off a great triple header down in the Alamodome (that game will be streamed online by KSAT). So, how are you feeling about your team's upcoming season? Excited? Dejected? Don't care? Here's hoping for a great season for all and no injuries!
  15. I guess this might technically fall under a 2024-2026 Realignment thread (or later), but this is something to keep an eye on. The THSCA Coaches School was this weekend in San Antonio, and the UIL Deputy Director, Dr. Jamie Harrison, had a press conference in which he was asked perpetual question about a potential Class 7A and when we might see it. He didn't give a definitive answer, and he did a good job explaining what all has to go on in that decision. But I'm thinking the earliest we see a 7A is the 2026-2028 alignment.
  16. Again, glad to have drum corps back. No qualms with the placements tonight. I kind of want whatever the Bluecoats design team was on when they designed their show. It's so weird, and I mean that in the best way possible. That show is a literal trip. Can't wait to see the ending for the Cavaliers, and I'm curious to see where Boston's show goes from here. A lot of potential for both groups. I love what Blue Stars did with "No One Else" and "Dust and Ashes". I've fallen completely in love with "Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812", so I was curious how those would sound on the field. Oh, and welcome back Phantom. No more worrying about a spot in finals for you. My one hot take is that I think Crossmen will finish 14th behind The Academy and Troopers. Just not feeling their show this year. Now, to figure out a way to get down to San Antonio for the regional. I've got to see these shows live.
  17. No real thoughts from me tonight. It's been a long day, and it's tough making it through the west coast shows. Still a lot of much improved performances compared to last night. Excited to see these shows evolve over the season. So ready for the east coast and midwest circuits to start next week. I will say that I do appreciate the shot of the sunset and San Gabriel mountains we got (basically a requirement for any competition/game held at the Rose Bowl). Oh and inset obligatory joke about how tonight's attendance will surpass the attendance of a UCLA football game here.
  18. No worries. My younger brother marched 2017-2019, so I was pretty glued to scores basically every single night. Also remember that there are a lot more contests in DCI than high school, so there's still a long way for these scores to go up over the course of the season (and the scoring "formula" is different in DCI vs. BOA as well).
  19. A 75 would have likely been the best open night score in DCI history (for reference, Santa Clara had the highest opening night score in 2019 with a 72.35). But at the same time, each of the other world class corps had lower opening night scores than they did in 2019. And I think the scores, especially early in the season, are more relative to the corps they going directly up against rather a "true score" (if that makes sense). It will be really interesting to see where the scores end up tonight when the Blue Devils join the fray.
  20. And if anyone is curious (or just can't sleep tonight), here's the recap and scores: https://dci.org/scores/recap/2022-corps-at-the-crest-san-diego Super dumb stat of the night: SCV got a 13.9 from six judges (GE 1&2, VP, VA, Guard and MA). Also, each of those caption scores were 7.1 content and 6.8 for achievement. Means absolutely nothing really, but it is odd.
  21. So happy competitive drum corps is back! Was kind of disappointed by the performer numbers in the first three open class corps, especially in brass and guard. Hopefully with things seeming to return to normal they can build their numbers back up over the next few seasons. Still wonderful performances from them tonight. Also, Gold has a really good shot to repeat as a medalist in OC. I have a feeling Mandarins will climb at least one spot come finals. Just so good from them even in the early part of the season. The Academy has a really fun show again. Pacific Crest was good as well. Interested to see how that show evolves over the season because it's a really interesting premise. Oh, and yeah, Vanguard is definitely in WC title discussion. That was great, even if it wasn't the entire show on the field tonight. Really excited for tomorrow night and then the midwest and east coast corps starting off next week.
  22. That is a great question ... that I do not have the answer to. My guess is that they'll just continue to look into it, ask directors, etc., but I'm not familiar with that terminology.
  23. https://www.uiltexas.org/files/policy/LC-General-Session-Packet-DRAFT.pdf There's the link to the draft of the results of the legislative council from the UIL website (probably will be official shortly). Only proposal that was passed was the one allowing a non-student to help with an amplification issue. The move to 7 judges for 4A was approved in concept (which I guess means we'll see it in 2023/24?). Also, the proposal on reducing the number of bands needed for an area to have a prelims and finals round was also approved in concept. All others are being studied or monitored.
  24. Oooh look, the TMEA alignment for the next two years is out now: https://www.tmea.org/regions/alignment/ On first glance, not a whole lot of movement in terms of marching band that we didn't already know (like groups moving up or down a classification). Two things that kind of stuck out to me: two-time defending 4A state champ Argyle will make its 5A debut in Area B, and Highland Park will slot into 6A Area B.
  25. Happy realignment day everyone! The UIL has released all of the district alignments for 2022-2024. I know that for a band perspective, the big date was with the classification list that came out in December, but this will tell bands where they are going for some Friday nights in the fall. https://realignment.uiltexas.org/ Very happy with Summit's football district draw. About the best possible from a travel perspective. Likely seeing Summit and Ennis contend for the District 5-5A DII title with Burleson and Midlothian Heritage potentially playing spoiler.
