  1. I’d say Hendrickson typically is pretty effective in their use of vocals. Just Another Brick is probably my favorite from them, although I’m not too crazy about this year
  2. Hebron leaves the stars and does a full show of Holtz’s The Planets. If nothing else it might finally fulfill my dream of hearing them play the slow section from Jupiter!
  3. Narration is good if it’s done tastefully (Less Avon and more what PCEP used to do back in the 90’s). Should a show rely on narration? No. But can an already strong show benefit from the added impact of some powerful narration? Of course it can! It’s all about how it’s implemented.
  4. Since we’re talking scores and statistics, I found it interesting that 7 of the 15 programs with the highest music scores at Nats are from Texas, including 3 of the top 5. (When talking about each band’s personal best scores, not the top 15 scores ever achieved)
  5. 5th - FloMo 2017 6th - Leander 2016 7th - Round Rock 2015 9th - Churchill 1998/CTJ 2016 So 4 spots held by 5 bands
  6. Rouse’s clarinet soloist was insane! Probably one of my favorite moments of the day
  7. I've finally gotten around to updating my score spreadsheet! Some pretty notable changes near the top (Reagan setting new records for highest overall and GE scores, Leander and Vandy setting new personal bests, etc.) https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ZKZ65G30TyVBhf9QXEVGBvADhqsQw_3rHBg5OH4izMQ/edit?usp=sharing
  8. I think the comment about Rosemount was also made before St. Louis, but after their success at Cedar Falls, which may have played a part
  9. Wylie East was amazing when I saw them yesterday. I think they’ll be doing some big things in years to come
  10. It’s really impressive that Highland Park’s students are able to make me think they’re genuinely adorable
  11. I really enjoyed Highland Park, Colleyville, Weiss, Hanks, Forney, Rouse, and LT. Everyone’s so good it’s hard to pick!
  12. It’s official: Highland Park has my favorite show of the day
  13. The yard lines are much harder/higher than the rest of the turf (at least from what I could tell this morning), which might be playing a part
  14. I wish I’d gotten to see Wakeland! We missed them in 2017 too, and I’m still upset about it

  16. This is why results are weird. The points spread is nonexistent here because the competition is just so deep
