Yeah, didn’t think about that...the way BOA judges score is definitely different cause they aren’t micromanaging their tenths or necessarily looking at an order.

2018 6A State

They were in 5A last year and placed 3rd in the state. They moved up to 6A and are looking to keep that momentum going. If you ask me, I feel like if they make state finals, they will round out in the last couple of spots similar to Bell and Coppell from area B in 2016. Waxahachie’s main focus this year is clearly UIL and they are clearly succeeding. They placed near the bottom of finals at BOA DFW so making finals at BOA San Antonio will be a fight but they are doing amazingly on the UIL side of things this year. -
BOA uses raw totals and it generally works out for the better. I wish UIL would follow suit.
-
If you look at the actual scores awarded from the judges and add them up, TC had a better score than Duncanville. Keller had a better score than Waxahachie even with that one crazy judge.

The Danpodcast - Cherry On UIL 6A Area!!!

The results have been updated to show Waxahachie as the champion. Seems wrong to do that after it was announced last night but what can you do :/ -
Haha! I have a serious question for anyone to answer. Do judges switch captions between prelims and finals? Could the same judge that had them in 11th in visual in prelims also have them last in music in finals?
-
Oh wow, didn’t know that. Was just keeping up with the past few years. Thanks for the correction!
-
Yeah definitely bittersweet. Keller has a 3-time streak for being area champs while Timber has a 5-time streak for being runner up.

2018 6A State

I think Keller and The Woodlands will be up there too. -
Interesting seems odd to announce something and then possibly pull it away...well congrats to Waxahachie and Keller for two extremely close and extremely impactful performances tonight!
-
Is there a reason the 6A area results page says Waxahachie is the champion when Keller won? Is it just because they technically had the best score?
-
Yeah...those are the flaws of UIL judging. Good thing it was only one crazy judge.
-
Geez two judges had Keller in 1st in music and on had them in tenth. Good thing that judge didn’t get their way.
-
Area B was definitely an uphill battle for Keller with a super demanding show that is probably the least “UIL” show that advanced.
-
The thing that stood out to me most tonight was when the Keller and Timber Creek drum majors stayed on the field to talk when everyone left. It almost brought tears to my eyes. Keller is such a respectable program and it shows that these results are irrelevant compared to the relationships that these kids have with another. Bravo Keller and Timber Creek for being great humans!

I’m not quite sure where it applies but I know if a band has 3 judges advance them but their overall ordinal score doesn’t advance them, they will still advance and an extra band will be taken to state. I guess it also applies to first place with Keller.

1. Keller 2. Waxahachie 3. Coppell 4. Prosper 5. Duncanville 6. Timber Creek 7. Haltom 8. LD Bell 9. Summit 10. Mansfield
-
Glad this rule exists. I think it is very beneficial most of the time. I think it is what allowed Leander to advance tonight.
-
This is true.
-
That continues Timbers streak of runner up. 10. Years. I’m heart broken.
-
I could see prosper winning prelims just like HEB. But the same thing might not necessarily happen in finals.
-
If you know which band it is please do not shame them. That is all. Thank you!

My bold prediction for area B is that at least one band will place higher than Keller at some point in the competition. My reasoning is that since 2016, Keller has made a noticible transition in-terms of show design. Starting last year, the visual program seemed to be much more challenging. I think part of the reason why they did SO well in 2016 was that they had extremely clean drill (for the most part) while offering up enough demand musically to be considered in the top 5. Their competitors (aside from Timber Creek and Waxahachie), all seem to be much more UIL focused and continue to put out extremely safe programs (Bell, Coppell, and Duncanville). While I think Keller will be far and away the highest achieving band in area B for BOA, the inconsistencies and differences in judging COULD result in an outcome where Keller doesn’t remain on top, and I think the likelihood isn’t actually all that small. Now I could be totally incorrect about this considering Keller has opened a pretty decent gap over their competitors this season at BOA that didn’t really exist in 2016. Actually I think this year is the first year Keller beat Bell at a BOA regional. (And they beat them by alot too). I wish everyone luck Saturday and I hope 6 bands can advance to state. Crossing my fingers.

BOA Indy 2018 Super Regional

Were they the ones with Leander’s “Color Study” props??? I absolutely adore that Leander show. -
Yeah...the drill design is baffling. The kids can do SO much better than what they were given to work with unfortunately.
