  1. Like the concept, but I must say, unfortunately the color scheme they chose is not doing them any favors. From far away (and on cam) it’s almost impossible to tell what’s going on on the tarp with the sea of grey/black/white.
  2. Interesting to point out that Tarpon rehearses 12 hrs a week during contests, and 23-24 hrs a week with no contests. Yeah. 1.5 to 3 times as much per week as the rest of Texas schools.
  3. On a totally unrelated side note, I will firmly stand by my opinion that Keller was ROBBED last year. Loved that show.
  4. Anyone else really not feeling BA's show this year? I mean obviously in terms of execution and performance it's fantastic, the kids are insanely talented, but the design just seems very weird to me. Not a huge fan of the uniforms, or the title of the show (Age of Discovery: Return to Xenon), or the pacing in general. I don't know. I might be crazy. But I think we might see BA place slightly lower than normal (read: not medalling).
  5. Gotta remember that numbers basically don’t matter at all. Just spreads. Even then, you can’t really compare across contests. And, Texas is known to inflate scores in general.
  6. ^bump, I would love to see Cedar Ridge snag some captions (and maybe gold!). I don’t know about “definitely” second, as anything could happen, but they’re definitely going to do VERY well. Anyway: there are several Texas bands going to this and hopefully they all do well! We are all on Team Texas after all
  7. I would be very surprised if Waxahachie doesn't win this contest by several points.
  8. Don't worry for a second about prediction lists on any site. No one knows what's going to happen until the moment when results are announced. And nobody's opinions matter except for the judges. Y'all have an awesome show this year! Take pride in that and keep working forward over the next few weeks!
  9. To me, it would be more akin to a blank canvas where anyone could paint anything they wanted on it. Just like in 4'33, it's not about the silence, it's not about the lack of art- it's about the art that exists in ambient, open spaces, everywhere. 4'33 isn't just a study of silence, it's a 4.5 minute long sonic landscape that forces us to consider everything around us as art and music.
  10. It's crazy that we have to consider a band like Cedar Ridge as a "dark horse" this year. They're fantastic (and so is everyone else)!
  11. ^ bump. I think that's pretty accurate and without any major upsets I expect the finalists to be roughly the same (probably not in the exact order though).
  12. I feel like this is a bit of a misconception. From a rubric standpoint, a lot of GE has nothing to do with show design. It has to do with how well each member is selling the design and how well the ensemble is making their design come to life with their performance. You can have an amazing design, but if each performer just looks like their going through the motions, and the ensemble looks lifeless and dead, they won't get a good GE score. It's more about the quality of the performance, and the energy the ensemble gives off. No contest would build a score around something that is out of the marchers' and directors' control.
  13. Wes Cartwright, one of the more famous show designers in the marching band world. Designs for BA currently and Bell for a while I think.
  14. HA! Funnily enough, my predictions ended up changing a little bit as the contest grew closer. But I guess it might be time for me to try the lottery?
  15. OK! Moving past DFW down to Houston now... let's get some updated predictions rolling in! To start, I'll do my best... Top 4: Vandy, Reagan, Leander, TWHS (in somewhat that order). 5. Round Rock 6. Hendrickson 7. Winston Churchill 8. Bowie So far, these are pretty much based on BOA Austin rankings. Reagan usually has a strong early season, (opposite of TWHS). The last two spots will be pretty hard to predict I think. But I think the two most likely to slide in will be: 9. Cy-Fair 10. Coppell Coppell just came in 11th earlier tonight, far behind Vista Ridge who came in 10th to a lot of these other groups last weekend. So if Coppell is in finals, I think they'll be in that last slot. However, they did get hit with some penalties, and they still have A LOT of their show to put on the field. Cy-Fair just seems like a safe bet for finals seeing how great they were last season. Giving recent trends, I have a hunch they'll slip ahead of Coppell, and possibly Bowie. We'll see! Anyway: it's gonna be a great contest! Looking forward to watching it via livestream
  16. Flomo unis IMO have been the best utilized out of any group I've seen, DCI or high school level. They look great beforehand, and then the colors change and the shakos come off and it just... it just makes sense. The concept is there. The visual appeal is there. And the color is just so pretty. It's just so good on so many levels. and as far as the 360 thing goes, let's wait until San Antonio... then we'll see which one is better
  17. Ugh. Hebron's ballad. I think it might be better than 360. It's amazing: if you haven't seen it live or over stream you're missing out... it's giving me HUGE BD vibes from this past summer! Flugel solo, tbone solo, very jazzy, and LONG!! I love that the show just takes time away from the CRAZY technique in the beginning (double tonguing features back and forth in the brass, some double tonguing in the woodwinds (yes you read that right) and just amazing technical playing) to carve out a beautiful, beautiful groove. Hebron- you stole my heart tonight <3 really don't get what the show's about but honestly idc i'll listen to that ballad all day everyday and not give a darn about what it means.
  18. And they had a 1 point penalty in finals.... that's actually a crazy penalty. I wonder what happened? Still would have been beaten by TC by 0.1, but...
  19. I agree 100% I think. I just wanted more from them and they cut off so short. Hopefully in the coming weeks they can continue to develop their show and keep adding in things, it just felt so bare tonight. And holy cow YES timber creek brought it tonight!! And Waxahachie!!! They were definitely off a lot of people's radars, but they won't be anymore. Waxahachie now has TWO DFW finals under their belt and are looking veryyy strong. UIL 5A finals is gonna be fun fun fun.
  20. WOW! So many surprises!! I thought Hebron and Flomo were crazy close, but I'm SHOCKED at that 11th place Coppell! Thought they had a great show, maybe just because they have less on the field than everyone else? Congrats to all the students tonight, such amazing talent and artistry across the board.
  21. When do we get to see prelims results? I always forget.
  22. They've been so close for so long... but I agree, they BROUGHT IT today. Kids should be proud.
  23. Wait, Leander is 3A in BOA but 6A in UIL? Is that possible?
  24. As a DFW native, I'm changing my predictions slightly now that we've seen some things (also to revive some discussion in this thread hopefully): 1. Flomo: This contest is theirs to lose. From what we've seen the past few years from them, especially last year, they will be the band to beat, bar none, at this contest. I could definitely see a situation where Marcus or Hebron edges them out, but honestly, Flomo has a great chance of winning it all. 2. Marcus: They usually seem to be cleaner than Hebron early season, and being a Grand Nats season for them, they're going to be going hard this year. Also, they'll be out for blood after state last year. They have such a fantastically consistent program, but so does Hebron, and Hebron could definitely grab the silver from them. But, I think Marcus is going to be in second. 3. Hebron: They're amazing. Nothing much else to say. The three LISD powerhouses could switch up 1-3 between themselves, but in my opinion, this is the most likely matchup. 4. Keller: I'm gonna place Keller a little higher than others have been here. I think their program, over the past two years especially, has been achieving amazing things. Last year was one of my favorite shows of all time, and if they continue to improve off it, they'll be a total powerhouse soon. 5. Bell: Last year was great for them. They'll be back very strong once again. I can totally see them and Keller switching, but I don't think they're quite ready to break into the top 3 again. I can't wait to see what they have in store for us this year. Immortal and last year's show (can't remember the name.... beyond the veil?) were just fantastic. 6. Coppell: I want them to be higher and get back to their old levels of success, similar to Bell's rising back up after a hiccup year. I think this year could go very well for them. They're one of the few bands that releases videos from every performance, including games, and they just look.... fun. I don't think they'll beat Bell, but 6th or 7th seems to be a very realistic spot. 7: Wakeland: Fantastic program that had a hiccup last year and missed finals here by 1 spot. And what was that hiccup? Oh, just their entire staff changing. And they still had a fantastic season. Can't wait to see what they can do now that they've settled a little. 8: Keller Central: They always do really well at early season BOA contests. Great concepts, fun shows, and a successful program. 9: Waxahachie: They're off some people's radars, but they'll be making for a top 5 bid at 5A state now that some of the Leander schools have moved up to 6A. They've been doing great stuff the past few years, I don't think this year will be any different. 10(?): Vista Ridge: Amazing band who is facing a horrible performance time, as well as travel. If they had a better performance time, I could see them being higher- actually, they're such an awesome group I can still them being higher than 10. But I really do feel bad for those kids. 10(?): Duncanville: A great, consistently successful band. The only obstacle they face is a brutal performance slot, which can just destroy some bands. Also, this is their first BOA contest in a long time, which doesn't always work out well. I can see them sneaking in to finals, but to be honest, it'll be tough to get ahead of some of these other groups.
  25. Mmmm I don't think so. Reagan 9, CyFair 2, and Woodlands 6? And JET and ridge point so high? Huh
