  1. Bands Of America has announced that BOA Waco will be at McLane Stadium at Baylor!

When the contest was reintroduced last season, I was kind of surprised that they didn’t host it at McLane the first go around. I figured it was kind of testing the waters, but I’m glad they decided the contest went so well that they would host it at Baylor.

  2. I miss HerbaFlerb. He was a Cedar Ridge band kid but he quit band his Senior year I think. Great presence here, and greatly missed!

(I know you all are thinking...SQUIRREL! But no, I actually thought of this because it's the Cedar Ridge band that puts on the Texas Marching Classic).

A friend sent me this post and I literally said “Aww!” out loud. I’m gonna have to start posting again :)

  3. Something about advertising and endorsements not being allowed but I’m not sure why it’s only evidently at the Alamodome. Daniel said the same thing was an issue for Hendrickson with their 3D glasses in 2016. A bunch of parents had to quickly sharpie off the logos on the glasses they were handing out to the audience.

Was just about to respond with this. Hendrickson and Cane's, CTJ and Whataburger.

  4. "Bagpipe Nonsense" I can't.

Also I'm not sure where the idea that Bowie and Leander wouldn't have made finals last year comes from. Round Rock did, and Bowie and Leander both made finals comfortably last year before falling.

GN scores kind of confuse me, so what I did was compare a band's SA score vs the scores of the 12 finalists and put where they would have landed. If someone has a better way of doing it, please let me know so I can fix it. Regarding CP, I totally forgot! Thanks!

  5. I made this spreadsheet comparing last year's SA to this year. I plan on adding State data for 2016 and this year (when it happens), so if you want to help with that just let me know.

I can't seem to find Vandy's 2017 show title or TWHS' title for this year. Does anyone know what it is?

    Spreadsheet in question: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1o-Z-BxZ4OVsioTMiabZUXbESMulboP7iyzdTbFwKu_s/edit?usp=sharing

Edit: Just realized I put a placeholder for LD Bell 2018 as I didn't find the title for that either. Please don't be offended by "Bagpipe Nonsense". It was a very good show.

  6. Vista Ridge will definitely play wildcard this weekend and beyond. I think there’s a very loosely agreed upon top half(ish) of finals, and bottom half/bubble. Vista Ridge can easily fall in either of those categories. While VR is having an unprecedented season by their standards, the hesitance to place them in the top half is reasonable given the fact that their highest placement at this contest is 14th, and have only made finals once. Personally, I feel the hype for a potential medal at UIL is reasonable (but maybe optimistic), given the right performance, but think they will hover around the top/half bottom half bubble for BOA SA, as they have generally historically struggled in GE captions. Which half they are in will depend a bit on how this dual judge panel scoring works out. If they can squeeze into the top half despite their early performance time on Saturday…Their finals run could certainly turn some heads. Otherwise, I think a top 10 finish for the history of this program would be phenomenal in itself.

They're already having a historical run. It's insane to watch. Go VR.

Have fun with this! I want some variety in the top 3 (not just a bunch of Lewisville schools) so I put VR and Keller up there

You seem to have forgotten a certain Ridge...

  8. Eh, it's your opinion but look at it a little more analytically - it also seems you're a bit confused on what we mean by depth - someone above me answered it quite well.

I can definitely see a case for Area D having a similar depth, but still, you can more or less look at the list and say who's going to make it to state.

Same for Area C: the list is pretty static. But there, you can look at the list and not only see who's going to state but also who's going to state finals.

With Area B, you have bands like Bell and Duncanville, who have made state and state finals almost every other year for the past decade +. You have bands like Coppell, who have made state and state finals literally every time for the past decade +. You have bands like Keller who are starting to be known as one of the top bands in the nation (and is really the only lock this year, imo). Then, you have bands like Haltom, who are obviously going to be strong despite missing state last time. You have Waxa and Prosper, who just moved up to 6A and have been doing extremely well in 5A and at BOA. And of course, Timber Creek and Keller Central who have had strong showings in BOA the last few years.

Right there, I count 9 bands who anyone could easily make a strong argument for making state, with the top few having a strong argument for making state finals. But in this area, they'll be battling for a spot at AREA finals.

    That's what depth is.

Thank you for answering my question civilly. I understand what you guys are saying now.

  9. I don't get the Round Rock love.  Don't get me wrong, it's good.  I just don't think its that good.  The them isn't cohesive compared to Cedar Ridge or Hendrickson.

Not sure if anyone remembers Cedar Ridge 2016, but Round Rock reminds me of that. It's just far too abstract. I like the show and the music is good, but it's a little hard to understand.

  10. C, D, and H are notably better in the top 3ish. B has more depth throughout the top 15ish than probably every other area and it's not particularly close on that front. B leaves out more objectively good bands than any other area at the end of the day.

I mean I guess? I just don't know how B has "more depth". I'm not even quite sure what "depth" is supposed to mean.

Not really sure how I feel about Hendrickson making finals at San Antonio. Maybe I'm letting my own issues with the show into this opinion, but it really seems like a dry, cookie cutter type show. It's not all that exciting and I wasn't really impressed by the drill/music. It feels like a clarinet solo with some accompaniment. Also LD Bell? I don't know a whole lot about them- does anyone have a video of this year?

  12. Mics and electronics are the paradigm. I don't see this changing. It's still early in the season and like all the other aspects of a show, the bugs are being worked out.

I feel that it is great that students are given the opportunity to learn these techniques. Managing a mixing board with multiple field mics, pit mics, solo mics, recordings and electronic instruments is a skill in and of itself. Kuddos to the mix masters and set up crews, for they too are part of the programs we see today.

It's up to the programs themselves to determine if this technology is used, it's complexity and what it brings to their particular show.

Remember too that these techniques (electronic/digital) can be an asset or detrimental to a show. When it's done right it can really enhance a movement, but a simple trip, faulty generator, wire or connection could kill that movement.

Either way it is what it is today and surely the future.

See a lot of bands on Saturday. Quite a few bands had electronic failures (Cedar Park in prelims, Leander in finals). In Leander's case, they still made their way to second place. Relying to heavily on them could turn your show into a trainwreck when they fail.

  13. it is going to be a crazy event for sure - no way to make a prediction yet, but based on what we have seen so far we can assume that CTJ, Leander and Vandegrift will all be in the top half of finals - should know more next week after we see the DFW (Hebron/FloMo/Bell/Keller) and Houston shows (Reagan/TWHS) that we have not seen in a scored BOA Event- looking at the BOA Schedules, Bowie and Vandy will be at Conroe next week so we will see their shows again. and the following week we see Marcus for the first time, and a few more of yesterdays finalist - (Round Rock/Cedar Park/Henny) in Waco.

3 of the top 4 from last nights finals CTJ/Leander/Vista Ridge do not have any BOA scored events until San Antonio SR - more than a month away, lots of time for them to make changes and polish that no one will see (or Score) until they hit the dome. and what we see from their UIL performances between now and then may not be what we see in the dome.

I know that it is said every year, but this one may be the toughest one yet - and with no big groups going to GNats this year - everyone has their eye on the dome, for BOA SA and UIL 6A State

Woo! Your post gave me goosebumps. So excited for State!

  14. I love to see all the Texas bands keep getting better and better. BUT, I was so disappointed to hear, or rather be subjected to, the AWFUL use of microphones by a couple of the finalists. Not only does it give the message that the director of that band does not believe in its students abilities to perform, but it horrendously distorted the music and created a huge imbalance in the musical performance. And, it was VERY PAINFUL to the audience trying to enjoy the bands' performance.

BOA needs to set limits on the use of mic-ing to create a fair marching band experience for all the bands as well as the audience.

The amount of mics used Saturday were crazy. I mean I like when it's used tastefully, but it can just get out of hand. Take Round Rock for example. A fantastic bari sax ensemble, but mics were so overpowering. It was distracting how loud they were. I'm a fan of advancement in band tech, but let's click it down a few notches.

While I'm talking about electronics, some synth yesterday was ridiculous.  My seat was literally shaking due to how loud the ""supporting"" electronics were. John Paul Stevens was a bad offender of this. They have a great and well-balanced sound, but synth at the hits made it sound so fake.

These things are both awesome if bands just used them with a little more discretion.
