  1. 27 indeed will be competing.

This area is very competitive, but has yet to produce a state finalist.  I have been all over Houston this year and I think we will likely see the same finalists as last year, with a possible few surprises just inside or outside finals.  The Katy ISD bands are starting to grow and improve really reallllllllly fast.  Tompkins is great and Paetow could make some noise.  Katy is surging and Seven Lakes is doing great things.  I was also quite impressed with Mayde Creek, an often forgotten school in the district.  They are an entirely new band this year and I expect them to be rising in the near future.

I call Cy Fair, Bridgeland or Seven Lakes to win.  The rest will be a fight.  Taylor is a dark horse for a possible state move again this year, but who knows.

  2. A great deal of this is copyright and sync rights.  A lot of composers who may be alive today have publishers who monitor sync rights to their music.  You may have the rights to arrange and perform, but not record.

There are also bands who do not want their early season videos posted or posted at all.  That is all up to the staff of each program.

If you think judges, who are the ultimate marching arts fans, aren't looking for or watch videos you are sorely mistaken.  I have been in the press box at MANY contests and those conversations certainly happen.  It is just the nature of the beast.

  3. I can do a catch all response I guess.

My point is that General Effect needs to be clearly defined as a higher level of achievement and expectations.  As I mentioned before you can do all of the content mess the world and if it is badly performed you are not generally effective.  At the end of the day the level at which what is performed matters more to me than WHAT is performed.  Checking off boxes to satisfy a criteria can be a dangerous game.  I am not saying marching band needs to go back to what it was long before our day, but I do fear that design considerations are really starting to out weigh the level at which musical and visual items are performed.  I get that GE is subjective and everyone has their own loosely definition of it.  However, I will always err on heavy weight being placed on performance considerations before I even give credit to design or "content."  I suppose I am a little bit more old school than I would like to admit, but I am far more impressed with a band that does the basics really well before the do all of the other stuff.  With that being said, the big dog schools consistently in state finals DO that very well.  I don't want to do away with GE, but the perception of it surely should be placed on achievement before content.

  4. Or...and hear me out...

Perhaps the most effective thing you can be is excellent at what YOU do.  You are not generally effective if the core of fundamentals aren't up to par.  You can do all of the fluffy dances and what not, but until you maximize the performance side of the sheet you are NOT generally effective.  If we just got back to that the world would be a much happier place.   The days of UIL and BOA finals looking very different are over.  I think we are in a good spot here in Texas and abroad.  I think young people have the wrong idea of what GE actually is and assume it is all design based.  SOME of it is design based, but a good judge would not really award that unless it is well performed and...well...generally effective.

As a Pearland Sophomore, i didn't get to know them very well before they left but Mr. Brown and Mr. Hernandez are 2 great directors and I hope they bring Tompkins to new heights. We saw them after our show at Katy and Conroe and we all enjoyed saying hi.

Pearland has a MASTER staff now.  Clay Jasper was one of the creative geniuses behind the rise of North Shore and Galena Park HS back in the days.  Pearland has always had great directors, but this staff is by far the most progressive they have had ever.  Good people over there.

Tompkins as the same director since the school opened and he has done a great job.  That area of Houston is starting to get stupid competitive.  If Friendswood comes back to 6A it will be come even more insane.  It is nice to have more than The Woodlands represent Houston at any contest.  Houston is slowly starting to come back to life.  It is a great city but has seen some big shifts since the Spring ISD programs have somewhat faded away, though they are still very good.

Keep an eye on Jordan and Katy.  They may have something to say about a potential Tompkins surge.  Katy did tie out of the SMC.

  6. Any school in Leander ISD will be fine regardless of pretty much anyone who teaches them.  The district's support is unlike the vast majority of those anywhere.  Those students who live in district are extremely lucky to have such amazing support.

Congrats to Mike Howard on the big promotion.  The LISD Fine Arts will be in very capable hands.

  7. I have seen Galena Park at a few football games.  They are just about as strong as they were in 2019.  It is still unfortunate they didn't advance in 2019, but their final run was just not as good as their previous performances.  The new director is in their second year and are they are doing great.  The rest of the staff from 2019 are still there.  I suspect they are absolutely in the running to get one of the 2 or 3 spots for state.  Galena Park's color guard is FANTASTIC.

Porter has ascended to another level and I predict they will easily win the area.  However, a new high school is opening in New Caney ISD next year and will probably affect somethings.  The area contest will be strong for sure.  That final spot will be anyone's game.  Porter and Galena Park will likely advance with College Station or Magnolia taking that third spot.  Crosby can be a dark horse.  Final prediction, Porter will hopefully, FINALLY, be a Houston band with finals potential other than Friendswood in 5A.

I'm interested to see how L.D. Bell is going to fare in 2021, with their success in the 2019 season as well as the confirmation of their new head band director, Suzanne Dell, as of 2021-2022 school year. She was an assistant director for Bell from 2014 up until now and has worked with the Blue Devils since 2016. She is one of the younger members of the Bell staff (I believe Chris Harmon and Ben Maughmer are older), and I think she can continue to bring success for the band program. There is speculation that Bell might attend Grand Nationals this year, but nothing has been confirmed.

Suzanne Dell will be a phenomenal new head band director at L.D. Bell HS.  The program will be just fine with her at the helm.  They still have incredibly strong feeder junior highs and a staff with energy to boot.  Hebron has the best shot at winning the 6A SMC.  I predict a new band will win the 5A SMC that has not won yet with a slew of new state finalists.  Watch out for Burleson and Granbury.  I think at least one of them will be a new state finalist in 5A if not both.

Jordan HS will be come a beast very quickly just like Bridgeland HS has.  I see a massive shift in the 5A landscape on the western half of the Houston Metroplex very soon.  Porter HS will claim the top spot in the Area I Finals, easily, with Willis moving to 6A.  Area I will be considerably weaker than before.  I see College Station, A&M Consolidated and Crosby making their way up the finalist ranks quickly and Magnolia HS making their way into finals.  Galena Park will be a wild card, possibly.

Kempner HS and La Porte HS are going to be dark horses.  I can see one of them taking a state spot with Jordan and Friendswood.  Pearland will shock 6A in a very good way.  I think they could very well challenge The Woodlands for the top spot if they are in the same area again.

  9. Bridgeland

    Lots to watch out for...

    6A

    Willis-Area finalist threat

    Tomball-Could be a shocker in 6A

    Tomball Memorial

    The Woodlands-As always

North Shore-Great band and always does well at UIL

    Westfield (Coming back up FAST)

    Bridgeland-Huge surprise this year!

    5A

Porter-They have become a force and will remain so

Galena Park-I hear they will grow to be even larger next year

Magnolia-Probably not happy with this years results and will be back with a vengeance next year

Foster-Fantastic year and will build on it

Waller-Fantastic this past year at Area

Barbers Hill-They keep getting better and bigger

  10. North Houston will be a bit different too.  Tomball and Willis have moved up to 6A and Lumberton is back in 5A.  This means we will see even more new faces at the 5A SMC from Houston in 2 years I bet.  Something tells me the Houston area may be recombined like it was in 2017 for 5A.

This gives Galena Park, Porter, Lumberton, Crosby, and College Station a pretty clear path for a fight to the SMC with room for Magnolia, Magnolia West and some new comers to be area Finalists next go around.  With the explosive growth of each of these programs I suspect Houston area schools that are not Friendswood in 5A will start to move up a bit.

  11. I was able to see some of the finalists bands and I thought...

Crosby was definitely clean music and marching wise, first time I had seen them. The Also Sprach Zarathustra worked as a great opener with great dynamic contrast and balance and I loved the Romeo and Juliet rendition! The Elsa's Procession (I believe is what it was) brought the show to a great finish with great fundamentals as well. Their marching was very clean as always.

Tomball's show was pleasant to watch as their uniforms and props gave a good aesthetic, but their marching (I think at least) was also clean and I enjoyed their drill. Sound wise, they were definitely of the most notable having a big sound and great woodwind moments. I definitely saw them in the top 3.

Galena Park was incredible! I thought they had the best sound of all, having not only power but a high level of maturity and balance. Dynamic contrast was on point, and I can't get enough of that Mahler's 2nd in the beginning! Flute and sax soloists (I'm a little fuzzy on whether there was another soloist/s) were amazing. Their marching and visuals were overall very good as well, but hopefully they can kick it up a notch in finals. Definitely my favorite.

That contest was CRAZY!  I too am shocked Galena Park didn't make it.  They were so good and were amazing in finals as well.  I guarantee you they will be back with a vengeance in two years.

Porter's finals run was just stunning.  I knew it would be close between them and the other advancers once they were done.  Willis, that was unexpected.  They came up from behind.  I thought Tomball had it!

I am not really feeling good about the judging at this contest.  I'm not saying the three that advanced didn't deserve it, but Galena Park should have advanced to state.  Sadly, it just didn't work out.  The state contest is less than with out that amazing show being there.

That was an amazing contest yesterday.  Best of luck to our advancers!

  12. Houston Area guy here!

I am in LOVE with Porter's Swan Lake and Equus show.  Who ever decided to roll those two works together is a genius.  It works so well.  I foresee them headed to San Antonio again.  They move with absolute grace and are really the total package.

A close second, and sometimes first, is Galena Park HS.  They are playing music that you only hear bands in other areas of the state playing.  Mahler 2 and Shostakovich 11 with Alanis Morissette's Uninvited really do work together.

Both of these bands make bold sounds that I find refreshing and strangely reminiscent of Houston's glory years in the 90's.  I hear Bob Chreste is working with both groups which would explain the sounds!

However, my favorite show of the entire year thus far is Vandegrift.  They are going to do amazing things at nationals.  I just may make my way up there to see how it all goes.

  13. I bet Galena Park and Porter will advance to State. Tomball or Magnolia will take the third spot.  GP and Porter are far stronger than people realize.  You will be shocked at Galena Park's rendition of Mahler 2 and Porter's risk taking sound quality.  I just don't see any other bands capturing the audience and judges attention the way GP and Porter do.  Both bands are very clean and will do very well on the UIL sheet.  I would even say one of them have a shot at state finals.  Albeit a bottom 3 spot, but both of these bands are that good now.   If they don't make it this time I find it hard not to imagine one of them contending for a finals spot in 2021 as both bands are going to continue to grow in number.  Both GP and Porter were less than 100 members 4 years ago and now both are pushing 200+.  I can see how people forget either of these bands exist, especially Galena Park who didn't even make area finals in 2017.

I personally cannot wait for the Galena Park mega crescendo from nothing into a Mahler 2 explosion on Saturday.  I have been dying to experience that again since I saw them at Katy and Galena Park Marching Festival.  It reminds me so much of the teeth knocking hit from North Shore's show last year.  I also cannot wait for the Porter wall of sound in Swan Lake.  It is just stunning.  I also hope that clarinet soloists kills it!  He/She is a great player.  I also love their visual program.

I am also very interested to see how College Station HS will fit into all of this.  I know they will be great, but this is the first time this band has faced Galena Park, Porter, Willis and Tomball at the same contest.  Also, we cannot forget Grand Oaks and Crosby.  Both bands have potential to pull an upset!

Those poor judges-I do not envy them!  It will be a very tough call.  I have lived in Houston for a long time and this area used to have not as good of band programs.  I still cannot believe my neck of the woods has bands that are even in the conversation at all.  Friendswood used to be the steamroller everyone didn't even bother trying to touch.  The directors at each of these schools are all fairly new to the game and all of them have turned their programs into monsters.  I gotta hand it to the directors at Porter.  When that school opened I thought there was zero hope and look at them now!  You could say the same for Galena Park and Magnolia.  Both programs have grown so fast from barely division one programs to the quality they are now over the last 2 years.  (Although Galena Park went to state in 2009, but quickly fell off the radar)  Again, I do not envy the judges in Area I.  This Area is going to be far more competitive than the state realizes.  If you are in town this weekend GO TO AREA I!!!

  14. I’m really hoping to see Magnolia make finals and even advance to state! Would be their first time ever I believe. I think we have a really good show this year but of course I’m partial. Lol I know ALL these kids have worked so hard.

Magnolia has a GREAT shot at finals and advancing!  This year's edition is by far the best Magnolia band I've ever seen.  It's a beautiful show and well designed!

  15. I agree that GP has a great chance at advancing, but the thing keeping me from having them as a 100% lock is their finish about 1.5 points behind Magnolia at Katy Marching Festival. They’re a great band doing great things, and of course there’s always the chance they just had a bad run that day, but it makes me a bit wary

The Katy contest is on a totally different sheet and scoring criteria than UIL.  I've seen every band in this area this year a few times.  Galena Park designed their show around the UIL sheet and it looks like Porter did as well.  What held Galena Park back at Katy was color guard visual design.  Their guard was considerably weaker than all of the other finalists.  I saw GP at UIL this past weekend and they are much improved from Katy right along with Porter.  Magnolia is fantastic, but they do not have the musical design package that GP and Porter have.  When you combine difficulty with a high level of performance those bands tend to win in the end.  I wouldn't try to use Katy results for the area contest.  At no point will the panel at area have the kind of scrutiny on a show in a way a BOA-ish sheet will have.  When it comes to pure music performance I foresee Galena Park and Porter at the top this area with either of them on top.  I'll give Galena Park the edge because their ensemble sound is pretty undeniable.  It's going to be a crazy weekend in North Houston!  It would not surprise me to see Galena Park, Porter, and Tomball as the advancers from this area.  These three bands are doing exactly what UIL is asking for them to do.  Magnolia could edge out Tomball in the clean department however.

  16. Porter won 5A at Galena Park and came in 6th overall at Lonestar Preview (placing ahead of solid 6A groups like Klein Oak and College Park and made a strong push towards dethroning some well known groups like Spring, while being well above some of their key competition; Willis). I've heard lots of good things from some friends of mine about this band recently and feel they have a strong chance of winning this area. Porter advanced last go-round as well.

Aside from Willis (2nd in 5A @ GP, 10th overall @ Lonestar) and Tomball (4th @ Katy overall) who both advanced last time as well, I think College Station HS (1st in 5A at Blinn Contest) and A&M Consolidated (3rd in 5A @ GP) both have a good chance of advancing.  Huntsville, Vidor and Nederland are all some of the strongest military bands in the state and could challenge for spots. Magnolia has been showing potential as well after a recent HD change, placing surprisingly well at BOA Houston (27th; shoulder to shoulder with Westfield, Cy Falls & Langham Creek) and BOA Waco (18th in Music, 18th in Visual including a 12th place visual score from VPI) as well as placing 8th overall in finals at Katy.  Crosby is a loose cannon (didn't class-medal at Galena this cycle despite advancing to state last cycle) but could pull through and advance in the endgame.

Actually, Galena Park won first place at the GPISD festival, but were not eligible for any awards since they were hosting.  All but one judge had them in first place.  Porter was second in the rankings (Which is awesome by the way).  The way I see it, based on UIL contest results the three bands that will likely advance from area are Galena Park, Porter and Tomball.  Willis and Magnolia are likely the next two possibilities and Crosby should do well.  I suspect the results in prelims will not be the results in finals because every single one of these bands are incredible.  I suspect one of them can make finals in the lower tier in at state.  These Houston bands are starting to get really good really fast.

  17. I saw two Houston area bands in 5A at a few football games last week.

Porter-The best I've ever seen them.  They have size and great sounds.  I love the musical selections. It's a much more mature approach and they are going to be very musical.  They will contend for a state spot again I'm sure.  They have a strong percussion section.  Quite impressive.

Galena Park-LOUD!!!!  They never stop moving and are playing the daylights out of the Mahler Symphony.  They aren't huge, but this is absolutely the largest they have ever been that I can remember.  I saw their preview show a few weeks ago and was very impressed with them. They will be a dark horse for an area finals spot and could sneak into state.  I will say their show is quite challenging which could hurt them in the cleanliness department, but then again easy doesn't win anymore.

The Area contests in 5A this year in Houston will be the best they have ever been.  There will be state worthy bands that are not going to make it.  I have a feeling a Houston band will make finals at state.  Everyone is far stronger this year than they have ever been.  I can't wait to see Crosby, Willis, Shadow Creek and Friendswood.  If Porter and Galena Park are any indication of the war we are about to see then this is going to be a very competitive year.
