2023 BOA DFW (Oct. 7)

I think Coppell would’ve been ever so closer to FloMo had they had a better start(great middle and finish though), thought the opener went significantly better in prelims, but I’m curious to see what everyone earned in prelims too! -

I think the development of that from the ballad onward will probably be the better half of Hebron’s show for me, and I imagine most spectators as well. Very interested to see the probably significant amount of show that’s left!! -

I definitely feel like they’re a group that gets overlooked a bit? Dare I say maybe not well-evaluated by folks sometimes🤐 -

Really have to appreciate Frisco ISD for continually expanding and not allowing their kids to bunch up in a few 5000-student sized super schools compared to 10-12 2,150 and lower sized schools🫡🫡 Copy/pasted from HR forum haha -

Any of them should be fine, quite a few of these bands are used to slower rollouts usually anyways! -

I preferred France a bit more to this one, but it was still pretty cool. They still found their nugget at the end of the day haha -

They’re talking about the HEB contest of last Saturday! -

Albeit I didn’t hear Forney as a whole production today, what i did hear i thought was good, but I didn’t think it was better than what Aledo and KC had going for them, especially KC, that show is momentum, momentum, tension, and more momentum all the way through. Aledo I thought had a very varied and challenging music production as well -

I understand, that’s what I was meaning as well. And I personally think that’s a bit nebulous to assume, on a case-by-case basis, and comparing to another group, even though Hebron is going to Grand Nats, theirs was more of a “throw everything we’re good at but the kitchen sink and see what sticks” production, and that did disappoint me in what i saw some. I’m more of a “performance carries the day” philosophy wise on shows anyways. I thought FloMo had a very whole, sound production that aligns with their creative philosophy and caters and exhibits their strengths very tastefully, not on the nose or forced. -

I don’t even think they were safe, I have to disagree here. It can’t start and stop at the concept, I feel like the performance itself was very characteristically FloMo, they were in their bag for all the tricks they typically pull out, very talented bassoonists, very good woodwinds and brass overall. The ballad was probably the most safe in terms of what they typically try, in that they actually had one this year whereas the last few years they kinda didn’t! I would also disagree in having Hebron under them, they’re probably going to have a better performance under the lights than what they had a little while ago imo -

I’m not surprised at these results personally, even though Forney was good, I thought they played their cards a bit to safe, similar to maybe Lone Star somewhat, they both are fantastic groups though and are definitely gonna respond!! This was a really tough finals pool to crack! -

They are probably the final band I put in the safe top half. Along with Wakeland, Marcus, Coppell, Hebron, FloMo -

So pretty much anyone in this group can and “should” make finals. It’s a crazy final block to start, only gonna get crazier!! -

Lebanon Trail did NOT want to be overlooked, what a fantastic start they have made for themselves, if they don’t advance here, 5A still has a lot deal with later at UIL state. Fantastic performance from them! -

TC: Mysterious and ethereal show from timber creek, lots of demand and difficulty visually, and I really liked their backfield arc impact in the ballad, filling up the whole field! The woodwinds were fantastic, wasn’t in a spot to get much of the heavier brass moments, but I got quite the earful from the WW’s. Naturally very colorful like an Aurora as well. Definitely a contender for top half, we’ll see if they get there! -

Surprise surprise, there’s plenty finalist potential groups here! That whole final block is full of them! There should definitely be some disagreement here amongst ourselves as to who’s in!😂 at least there will be when the final verdict is revealed… -

They probably have a better finals performance in store as well. It’s tough to disagree with their sound palette, even if they injected a bit more chaotic energy than they typically do! The flag features in the ballad will also be more effective under the night lights as they were last week! They are in the mix with everyone today! -

Wakeland: a band that has their musician-athletes carry a huge load every moment of their show, probably the most visually demanding show of the day so far by a substantial margin, ARROWS AND ARROWS EVERYWHERE…and they were pretty good musically too haha Down for a Euph solo anytime, anywhere, especially that Bergersen piece to open the show, went all Phantom 2022 on that one and I appreciate that🫡 -

Lone Star: hard to say where they are currently! They are definitely a finalist-caliber band, it all depends on how immersed one can be with the subject matter of traffic gridlock!😂 but yeah, they’re a fantastic group, chaotic, fun and exciting musical moments abound. Wish y’all luck in getting to finals! -

Rudder’s show had many emojis lost to the wind🙃 those props were quite goofy and fun! So many different featured instruments, a kooky and varied musical experience from this small but mighty band! Good job y’all🫡 -

Sachse: Quite a lot of theatrics coming out from Sachse today, probably the most engaging ballad of the day so far! The bassoon soloist was pretty awesome. They could make finals at nearly any competition they decide to go to, they definitely have a shot here! We’ll see if they get the nod!
