I'm loving this year for Area G. I feel like it's been more difficult than usual to rank the bands and I love that! My finals predictions as of now:

1. United

2. Alexander

3. Weslaco

4. PSJA

5. Los Fresnos

6.Harlingen

7.Hanna

8.Edinburg/Edinburg North

I recognize the hot take of having United 1st. I just really like their show and they've been getting better with each performance. Yes the prediction is slightly biased, but I know it's not impossible! Who doesn't love a good underdog story?!
I feel like Weslaco and PSJA can switch. I think Weslaco is really clean, but I feel they're missing dynamic range in their playing, so there's a chance PSJA takes the spot.
As bad as I want Los Fresnos getting a well-deserved state run, the other bands have made so many improvements this year, super competitive!

This year will be crazy! I'm hoping we get some surprises!

It’s truly such a crazy year 5A and 6A that it’s so hard to keep up with all the insane stuff happening. I wouldn’t even count out a band sneaking in from behind and being a crazy underdog taking the final spot

Or...it could be completely different.

Only problem is why Weslaco is that low on the list! Just curious to know what your reasoning is behind that pick

Really? Harlingen that low? And what’s with Weslaco so low?! They are the real deal this year!! They probably have one of the best shows this year!! Also no way Hanna gets higher than top 4 in my opinion. Just saying based on my opinion. I was right about them last time.

I believe with these region results we have 3 area bands advancing to state this year! I was only concerned about two bands but I saw both received a 1. Please correct me if I am wrong but as I am seeing it there will be 3 Bands Advancing To The State Competition!

Correct! 3 bands WILL be advancing to state this year!! What an exciting year! Any predictions anyone?

JBA, United, Los Fresnos. Though this third spot is ridiculously up for grabs, so many programs putting out on those fields. Increasing quality every single year.

So stoked for that third band that gets to make the trip.

Area contest has historically always been a big gamble. There's been some really weird judging in the past.

I picked the first three because those programs have the most experience making it to the state contest, and they're all performing great shows.  I guess the question is which program will peak at the right time.

I’d say right now (I’ll change up my rankings)

1. Alexander

2. Laredo United

3. Los Fresnos

4. Weslaco

5. Hanna

6. Harlingen

7. PSJA

this year is as chaotic as ever for that last finals spot !!! I don’t think I’ve ever had a year this crazy competitive for finals in a while!

This year has been very exciting indeed! However in the end only 3 will advance.
As of now my predictions are,

United (State)

Alexander (State)

Weslaco (State)

Hanna

Los Fresnos

Harlingen

PSJA

That 3rd spot will be a major shootout between Weslaco, Hanna and LF. Exciting programs fighting for that state spot! As for United and Alexander, I believe their spots for state are locked. Now I know United over Alexander may be a hot take but I am sure both HBDs of Alexander and United will be pushing their programs to their greatest potential this week and this is where the hot take comes in, United's show is in my opinion harder both visually and musically, whereas Alexander's is not as difficult as United's. Unfortunately this may just be bias because I personally love United's show and would love to see them claim the Area G title again.

This is one of those areas were the data is present for a majority of these head to heads, but I still feel there could be a major shake up come area day.

Finalist predications in alphabetical order with state advancement predictions bolded:

Brownsville Hanna HS

Harlingen HS

Laredo Alexander HS

Laredo United HS

Los Fresnos HS

PSJA HS

Weslaco HS

I could see this happening. It’s so crazy this year that Edinburgh is left off this list and they are still an amazing band this year. I wish they took 8 to finals! way too competitive, but I like how it’s benefitting the valley.

It's going to be a very, very competitive contest this Saturday. All of these shows are so good that the judges will have a very hard time selecting the top 7 for finals. We may see a band or two that always makes it to the finals round be pushed out of it this year simply due to the nature of how these contests are judged. It all comes down to the very execution of each show, that's what will get these bands into the finals round as well as the three state spots.

Now for my predictions, I still think JBA and United are pretty much locked for the first two spots. However, it will be a competition between them to see who gets to take the Area Title this year. Now for the third spot, it could honestly be anyone else in finals. My personal favorites to take the spot are Los Fresnos and Harlingen. Los Fresnos opted for a more traditional show, but the execution and ensemble sound is absolutely phenomenal, quality over quantity! And Harlingen, their show really tells a story this year! It was definitely a fan favorite at the Region 28 Pigskin this year. Unfortunate that they're not as big as they used to be, but the energy they can produce for their numbers is incredible!

The other bands that will absolutely make finals in my opinion, in no particular order, are PSJA, Weslaco, and Brownsville Hanna. Wish I could put the Edinburg schools on here as well, so much good talent in this Area that it's so unfortunate only 7 can advance to finals!!

What are y'all's thoughts on how this Area will play out? Any predictions for upsets?

I will say Los Fresnos going traditional with that show feels so refreshing to me. It’s such a good show with good design and amazing brass sounds. I love it so much and hope that they can make it to the dome. I will say, again, Edinburg/North are still really good this year and it’s really a shame that they might not make finals because of how good they are. If there’s a tie for 7th do both schools make finals or is there a judge tiebreaker rule?

So like if you think about each band's performances, and then think bout the new Area judge sheets  - do all of the shows ya'll like match up with what is being judged?  Don't be fooled by what ur seeing. I think there's gonna be some crazy results.  Ya, some of these bands sound good and are clean, but is there the level of demand there?  I think there's a reason some bands make it all the time.  Let's see how that experience stacks up.

I was watching some recent performances on YouTube - some groups just don't got that level of refinement.

Whatever - it's gonna be crazy good to watch.

I’d argue that some experienced bands (don’t wanna say anything) are having issues this year and haven’t been having the best runs and the pigskin run reflected that. I will say that I feel some placement will happen that will shock everyone this year because of this. I’m hoping nobody has bad runs in this current field of play because of the  situation of bands.

I agree with most of this but where is Hanna?!? I would personally have them taking the last finals spot. Edinburg North is right on the bubble this year depending on how things go for them at prelims

As of now, I’d have to say my predictions are

1. Laredo United

2. Laredo Alexander

3. Harlingen/Los Fresnos

————————

4. Los Fresnos/Harlingen

5. Weslaco

6. PSJA

7. Brownsville Hanna

————————

8. Edinburg North

9. Edinburg

10. Brownsville Vets

11. San Benito

12. La Joya

13. Laredo LBJ

14. Edinburg Econ.

15. Laredo United South

The third spot is going to be a real battle between all of the non-Laredo finals bands. It’s going to hard for the judges to decide who deserves to go, everyone is so good this year! It will come down to the very smallest detail in how these bands all add nuance to their music and technique to their step. That content score is what could determine how this all goes down as well! Never deny the power of the audience themselves in adding to that general effect! If Weslaco, PSJA, or Hanna level it up, anything could happen with these results. Just a day away and still so close to really rank these wonderful groups. 95 degrees in McAllen tomorrow (whatever happened to fall?), so I hope every ensemble has an outstanding performance regardless of this band camp weather! Best of luck to everyone performing tomorrow!

Yep. It's gonna be a ridiculously competitive area competition. Do you think we will get 1 set of top 3 in prelims that will completely change at finals? Similar to Bluecoats and Boston rivalry this past year?

I'd like to change my rankings after watching these bands a bit more closely.

1. Laredo Alexander
2. Laredo United
3. Los Fresnos

-------
4. Weslaco
5. Harlingen
6. Hanna
7. Edinburgh
-------

8. PSJA
9. Edinburgh North

I feel that Weslaco and Harlingen could easily take that 3rd spot but who knows, up to the judges! Lets remember that whatever the judges give is completely up to their opinion and it's very subjective rather than objective. All of these bands put in crazy hard work this year to get to this point and I feel as if any one can shock the world! Good luck to every band tomorrow!!
