The actual scores don't really matter cause the numbers are relative from contest to contest; it's mainly about who's around them.

Duncanville finished below V.R. Eaton, and significantly behind Byron Nelson (both were 17th and 14th at Area J last year). Tyler Legacy was right behind them.

Forney mainly faced Area B bands at HEB, but if you look at Prelims, Forney had a slightly closer gap with Aledo than Sachse did at BOA the week after.

Sachse looked and sounded completely different from Wylie to Bedford; they've cleaned up significantly over the past week. We will get to see how they match up with Duncanville at Birdville next weekend, but I'm more confident in Sachse.

Referring to my updated predictions, Waxahachie should take care of business at Area. I actually think 2-4 is very close together, but I do have Forney currently at 2nd. Rockwall and Sachse are interchangeable at the moment to me, but Rockwall has faired a little better against stronger competition so far. Hard to gauge Duncanville right now since they've only done one contest against fairly decent competition, but they seem to be having a slight down year. But they are still very good; it's why I'm so high on Tyler Legacy this year. It's very much a real possibility that at least one of the RISD bands misses finals here.

There are 2 RISD districts. Do you mean Rockwall or Richardson ISD having schools Miss finals?

I won’t shy away yet from lake highlands they beat Sachse and Boyd at WMI even though judging hasn’t been there I feel like they might squeeze in top 5,and I agree Sachse placing 14th at Bedford just one spot out of finals is pretty good considering they still are not completely cleaned especially part 4

i'm going to be completely honest, lake highlands starts off wildly good.... and kind of stays at that level while other state level dudes pass them

Yeah that's true and they don't have their full show on the field yet, at BOA they finished with their Drum break. Also it sounded to me as if they had some timing issues, maybe not a great run from them. Also they had some sound issue that got fixed right before they started playing. Not sure what the issue was but I saw them working on it.

Here are my predictions now that BOA has passed.

1. Waxahachie

2. Forney

3. Sachse

4. Rockwall

5. D-ville/Berkner

6. Berkner/D-ville

7. Lake Highlands

8. JJ Pearce

9. Rockwall Heath

10. Richardson

I think both D-ville and Berkner have a shot at state if they have a good run or if any of the top 4 placements have something go wrong. Overall I think Waxahachie is a lock and Forney is a lock. 3rd and 4th could fluctuate depending on the day. I'll try to go to Birdville contest and see how things stand after that.

Heath below Pearce? They placed quite a bit above them this weekend at MMI. BoA score sheets are also way different from area, meanwhile MMI used the new judging system. It's kind of difficult to base placements off of BoA scoring

Going off of E1., I personally see Heath at least above Pearce, maybe LH as well. They placed much higher than Pearce at MMI (beat Rockwall in some categories too) and they still have about 1/3 of their show to put on the field for Prosper this weekend.

They arent a consistent finalist here or back in the original area C, ESPECIALLY not in the old area C, so I guess if relevancy means consistently in area predictions, I think the unfortunate truth is yes.

Its not a bad thing, if they have the talent and show they can easily make it just like everyone else, McKinney Boyd was left off many peoples finals predictions for 2023 despite MAKING STATE the year prior, these forums just have a lot of people (primarily high schoolers) who have a limited scope of bands and knowledge on design, so bands that aren't "mainstream" or consistent finalists at a competition will naturally be left out of discussion.

Its not that people think bands like Royce City or Plano West or South Grand Prairie are bad or dont "deserve" area finals, they just aren't in active discussion for many people at area since they just generally don't make the cut year to year. I would be happy to see groups like Royce City break into finals and establish themselves as up and comers, thats when this activity is at its most entertaining at the middle level.

The other unfortunate truth is area placements can decide if a school is going to make state. Royce City could easily make state in another area out in like west Texas or somewhere that isn't as competitive but they get thrown into a area with some power houses like Waxahachie and Forney. A lot of schools are much better than some of the lowest state bands but people never talk about them because they are in an unfortunate area where they don't get to see the State contest.

is Royce City just like not at all relevant?

They become relevant when people spell it correctly as Royse City! Ha

So, IMO they are struggling to keep up with the 6A bands but they have been solid for a few years. I think reclassification this Winter will drop them to 5A as they open a new HS in district. Will be curious to see how they make that adjustment

Worthy Fate won't open until 2027, so Royse City should continue to be a 6A at least for this next realignment.

If I remember correctly their head director left after 2018 and it seems to have had a major impact

Head director is the same, actually he’s been the only director at that school since it opened in like 2000 lol. I do believe it was the assistant director that left after that state year. I also believe he was the person who wrote/designed their show in 2018, who by the way, is doing so again for them this year.  They don’t have a full time guard director though.

A combination of covid and a new Magnet highschool named Vanguard; opened in 2021 one mile away was that major impact to John Horn. Their 3 middles schools have excellent band programs. As of now I’ve heard through those directors there’s 250 8th graders that would go to Horn next year. However, sadly, Horn is recovering from some stigmas, so a lot of the parents opt for the new school. Most of these kids that get opted there are the top chair players, region qualifiers that would’ve otherwise gone to Horn. So theyre taking like 2/3 of  their talent lol. The worst part is the magnet school doesn’t even have a fine arts program. They did mention that next year they expect a surplus of 100 to 120 kids. Their band is currently 220 on the books, (up from 160 last year) they said if this stays true they won’t have instruments for all the kids lol. so it would be interesting to see what happens for them in the future.

Any idea what happened to John Horn? In 2018 they were being paraded as the next big thing and as a contender for SMBC finals…and then past 2019 I stopped hearing about them altogether.

I didn’t realize they’d placed second to last this past year. Seems like a really long way to fall sadly.

Was not expecting some John Horn comments on this feed lol. I just replied to Tubalord but essentially a combination of Covid and a new Magnet highschool that opened in 2021 is what messed them up. The new school is literally 1 mile down the road from them. They’re making strides in the right direction though. I’d expect them to be back in the buzz in the very near future.

I haven't seen Rockwalls show but it surprises me that you are putting Berkner in 4th or 5th right there with rockwall. I know they finished well at at BOA Dallas but I don't think there show is strong enough to breach the top 4 and get a state slot. I think they are setting them selves up for a successful next season.

personally Berkner seems kinda mid this year, at least at this point in the season.

I mean they have some pretty difficult music so it makes sense they wouldn't sound as strong, these last couple weeks all devoted to cleaning should really help Berkner out.

Unfortunately I don't think i'll be making it to any Region performances but I should at least see finals of area. I'm sure TubaLord11 will be there to document how each band played.

Yeah I get it. It can be difficult to see all the bands especially depending on what time your own band goes
