I’m very curious to hear how everyone opposed to this exception would rewrite the rule. If you have three 1’s and two 2’s, it seems wrong to throw those out. Two 4’s, as with Bridgeland? Maybe. One 9, as with Clements, definitely. Maybe make the requirement four 1’s and one bad judge to trigger the rule? The focus would need to be on how many wayward judges you need to trigger the rule, and how far off they need to be from the mainstream judges.

What’s the point of five judges then? Two judges opinions are completely thrown out.

Cypress Woods got a 1,1,2,2,3.
Bridgeland got 1,1,1,4,4

Woods was 1st or 2nd by 4 of the 5 judges.

Bridgeland got two 4ths. This isn’t a bad judge rule. This is a preference so all judges’ views should matter.

I"m not quibbling over whether Bridgeland should have beat Woods. I'm asking how you would rewrite the rule. It sounds like you would toss the rule entirely. So you'd be OK with a 1, 1, 1, 1, 25 not advancing to state?

I’d change to BOA type scoring. Ordinal is ridiculous.

And I didn’t say anything about the rule for advancing. Keep the bad judge rule there. Area champion should take into account all judges.

I agree.  I think having a rule makes sense, but I think this one is excessive.  I would be in favor of one that required first place from four judges.  It might also make sense to have the three judge rule like it is, but require at least one of the other two judges to also rank them higher than the other band - I don’t know.  But throwing out the scores of 40% of the judges seems wrong.

I'm a Cinco Ranch pit captain and we're over here coping so hard hoping that something would happen how likely do y'all think that the bad judge rule could take affect and give us a state spot?

in order for a band who's not in the placements to qualify for state, they need a 3 or lower from 2 music judges and 1 visual judge to advance.

if you had those ordinals sure and it already would've happened, but unfortunately this is not the case.

it is what it is, you live and learn and move on from things like this. sorry about your situation and i can't imagine how we would feel in the same one.

What a wild ride. A school being dq’d, a different school missing state as a result, horrendous weather, multiple stopped performances, a results announcement with virtually nobody left in the stands, changing the champion, angry parents and angry students. Long live area I!

Not to mention students crammed in buses for almost 3 hours during rain delays (I was one of them)

As a Woods parent, I can say this has been a truly wild experience. Between the weather delays and the change in area champion. But a rule is a rule. I just wish UIL had realized that and called it from the beginning. It's been interesting to hear the differing opinions and perspectives in this discussion. From my point of view, the outcome should be a character builder for the Woods kids. Yes, it stinks, but they qualified for state. That was the objective and I'm sure there are other bands who would love to switch places with them. They had yesterday to be sad (there were some tears from them) but now it's time to focus on the next goal. They have two more chances (BOA and state) to refine their performance. My hope is this will become an opportunity to learn to handle difficult situations with grace and continue on with grit. Congrats to Bridgeland on a stellar performance and good luck at State and Grand Nats!

Great attitude, and thank you. Looking forward to going head-to-head with you guys one last time next week! I would love to see all 3 CFISD schools in finals.

Great outlook and approach, I respect that.  Seriously love the show.  Can't wait to see how it does in San Antonio!
