MartinHorn Posted April 15, 2006 Posted April 15, 2006 I think the Easter Bunny is mad because he has no idea what he has to do with Jesus' ressurection. Quote

The religious/political leaders of the time understood that the best way to appease and control a differing culture that you have taken over is to allow your new subjects to keep their old traditions and beliefs and to slowly integrate those traditions into your own. Easter in the Christian sense is about celebrating the Ressurection of Jesus. Nobody exactly knows when the ressurection happened, though, so we assign an arbitrary date on which we celebrate it. This date happens to be very close to the Spring Equinox. A ressurection can also be seen as a re-birth or restarting of life. For millenia, many cultures (especially pagan cultures from Europe and the Middle East) celebrated the return to life of the land (new plants and animals) during the time around the Spring Equinox. A central part of the celebrations were the ideas of Fertility and Growth. As such, they tended to celebrate their symbols and gods of fertility. The Assyrians fertility goddess was named Ishtar (sounds like Easter doesn't it?). In Greece it was Astarte. For the Norse, it was Eostre (seeing a pattern?) whose celebration was on the first full moon after the Spring Equinox. This is almost the exact same timing as today's Easter (the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox). The reason that the Easter Bunny goes around laying eggs is because those are two ancient symbols of fertility and life. Just look at how fast rabbits multiply, and the egg is an obvious beginning of life. The same kinds of links to ancient rituals can be made for just about any Christian holiday, especially Holloween, but also Christmas. Quote

chickora Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 If I was a little girl watching this, I would never want to celebrate easter again. I'd rather go to school. >.> Quote
