next year(state for 5a)
ftwdrummer replied to voforlive's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
In '06, yeah...because, timing-wise, we had to report to the band hall at 4 the next morning. Same thing happened against Mansfield High in '07, the night before BOA (one of the pitfalls of going on the field at 8:30 AM). You guys were still pretty good at our house in '07. And if not for football teams like yours, we wouldn't be on a 26-game streak, with back-to-back *perfect* seasons. Thanks. -

We'll miss you guys, too...the football game itself, not as much...your band was pretty good, though. (says the person who distinctly recalls his band getting their brains bashed in by four spots by you guys at Area '06) -
My preferences are very simple: I like pieces where the percussion either has a lot to do, or nothing (I don't like a piece that has nothing percussion but suspended cymbal rolls, for instance) So... That I've Played (or would have played, if there were perc. parts) Blue Shades -Ticheli (nuff said) Lux Aurumque -Whitacre (the power you get radiating off the stage when a good band hits those chords in the middle is just too much) October -Whitacre (the ability for it to go through so many different ideas and still be cohesive amazes me) 1812 Overture -Tchaikovsky (played this one with a local community orchestra...most fun I've ever had counting rests) That I've Heard Awayday -Gorp (will be playing it this year for UIL...apart from the pointless percussion break 2/3 of the way through, it'd be in my top 5) Symphonic Metamorphosis -Hindemith (Fantastic piece, culminating in one of the most famous marches of all time) Anything by Gershwin -Gershwin (He's Gershwin...nuff said) Anything by Bernstein -Bernstein (see note for Gershwin, apply here)

Best Rising Bands in the State
ftwdrummer replied to flutespaz21's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
I was mostly kidding about the Highland Park thing...it's just that, for something like 20 years or so, the largest or second-largest school in 4A did end up being Highland Park...enough so that it was almost a layman's rule of thumb to find the cutoff for 5A by adding two to Highland Park's attendance (key word there being ALMOST -
Additional info...not exactly on topic, but sorta... Paschal's Varsity Orchestra is playing: Nimrod (from Enigma Variations) -Elgar Allegro from Symphony No. 8 (Unfinished) -Schubert The Great Gate of Kiev (from Pictures at an Exhibition) -Mussorgsky All of them are sounding awesome so far (our third rehearsal was this past Thursday)...apart from trying to cover four parts at once for "Kiev"

Best Rising Bands in the State

As I recall (from reading the releases of conferences every year), as well as my dad's recollection (did texas high school band for one year in the mid-'70s pre-boarding school), UIL usually defines the conferences so that the largest 4A school in the state is Highland Park; any schools larger are 5A. So...anyone have attendance data for the Area D schools and Highland Park? -

so I figured once I went back and looked at it. Thanks.

How'd Westfield get to do the opening for "One," then? Or does music while coming on the field not fall under the rule? Or was someone actually rocking out on synth and I just missed it?

OK, our band finally (finally!) has our UIL program in place...more or less... We will DEFINITELY be doing Lincolnshire Posy (Grainger0 We will 98.3% LIKELY be doing Awayday (Gorp) Our director is still undecided on a march: it's now a toss up between Rolling Thuder (comp. unknown to me), and Easter Monday on the White House Lawn (Sousa) And Fata...if you guys end up doing Redline, I will be wishing I was at Southwest instead of Paschal...sorta.

Prediction: Wherever the Cavies place, Phantom will be one spot below them. (See results starting with 2005) Given the fact that in the recent past the Cadets' sequal shows have dropped four spots from the show they're doing a sequal of, I'm putting them sixth. Wagering Cavies first (they always win the years after they don't in this millenium [2004, 2006])...ergo, Phantom second (wishful thinking, I know, but I can dream, can't I?) Based on that, plus some rough guesses: 1) The Cavaliers 2) Phantom Regiment 3) Blue Devils 4) Santa Clara Vanguard 5) Carolina Crown 6) The Cadets Again, though, EXTREME WAG's there...along with a whole heap of wishful thinking.

Marching is Sport?
ftwdrummer replied to SCV_Contra's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
New ruling: marching is both SPORT and ART. It's SPART. Which means we're not sportsmen or artists...we're SPARTANS!!!!! -

Here's my best yet: Movement Religioso -
Our band director is fluctuating for what to do with the wind ensemble. First we were going to do Lincolnshire Posy and Rocky Point Holiday...then we were going to do Lincolnshire and something else...now we've got a bunch of ideas thrown in, centering around whether we do Redline Tango OR Lincolnshire OR both. The band voted (sans percussion, because pit meets during Wind Ensemble's period, and I'm the only person who's both in pit AND wind ensemble), by a score of 18 to 17, to do Redline if we had to choose (I was the deciding vote)...the rest of the percussion guys voted Redline as well...so probably definitely doing Redline.

Uniforms

i like reagan's uniforms, circa 2003. The all-black with just the sash gets me every time. -

amen to that -
same sort of thing for me...he's my head BD up here at paschal...not as much of a huge profound influence on my life, but he's still been pretty influential...when he's not trying to philosophize about how [to quote him]: "I'm optimistic up to a certain point...and then I'm a realist." I'll tell him you said hi.

"curvalinear"...sounds familiar...the name Mario Casanova mean anything to you, Danpod?

Phantom '05, Cavies '06, Devils '06, Vanguard the year they did Blue Shades (99, I think; accuracy?), Phantom '06 Am I weird in that I don't get the love for Phantom '03? The music was ok, but in terms of overall show, it just didn't gell for me...and I know two guys who marched it.
-
new update from paschal: for our winter concert we're doing "Christmas Recollections," (arr. Edmonson); "Lux Aurumque," (if you don't know Whitacre wrote this, I almost pity you); and Del Borgo's arrangement of "Carol of the Bells." For UIL concert season, we're definitely doing Lincolnshire Posy (Grainger); our other non-march piece is currently a toss-up between Rocky Point Holiday, Away Day, and Redline Tango.
