  1. Frisco High's new directors have completely changed the original show idea. That must really be a killer.
  2. haha, sorry, since I'm a H.P. nerd I just have to point out that if that is so, then that will probably be the biggest weekend of my life... The Deathly Hallows AND Honor band results!!
  3. Hm, I think I said what I meant to say wrong, but everybody seems to have gotten the point. The music wasn't terribly difficult overall (I know simply cus our band director's little brother is in Marcus' band), but they put it at such a unqiue and amazing level that it stood out. And I watched the show again just a few minutes ago, and the drill was relatively simplistic. Right now, our woodwind section isn't looking to hot... it's starting to scare me.
  4. yesterday, our director made a great point about why Marcus won state. He said if you looked, and actually examined the show you'd notice that: A) The music wasn't really all that hard They never really marched faster than 160 C) The drill didn't have amazingly hard forms to make and wasn't overl advanced what he said made them AMAZING (which they were, and always will be...) is how precise they were in EVERYTHING. Yes, they only had 5 trumpets playing during the william tell section, but it was loud, together, in tune and just perfect... He therefore concluded that it's not just marching at 10000000000 bpm, or playing Britten's Young Person's Guide that makes a state champ... it's being able to perform like a concert band out on a field of grass (or astro turf... w/e).
  5. haha, don't get me started on that movie... when you have a bunch of crazy band kids at somebody's house watching that w/o parental supervision at 2 in the morning... interesting things happen. lol.
  6. mmm... our band is easily a cult... Our trombones even have their own confederation w/ a constitution and everything... It's really creepy, especially their little rituals.
  7. I can understand a jazz band having clarinets... there's a lot of really interesting jazz songs w. huge clarinet solos... why I can't understand is why you would have two flutes and 3 baritones in a jazz band...?
  8. Hmm, for some reason, I never really liked Armenian Dances... IDk, it just didn't measure up to the level I hold Reed to... here's what I've learned to love: Ra! - Amazingly fun to play. It's a 4 minute whirlwind of... well i don't really know... Niagara Falls - Probably my favorite. A little jazz, and a lot of marching band feeling... Tempered Steel- Very Sound effect oriented, but melodically, rather dull. Summer Dances - I love the melody's and the emotion in the slow section. Russian Christmas Music- Of course, can't forget this one... First Suite in Eb - I can't really place why I like this one, it's just a classic in my eyes. Prelude, Siciliano and Rondo - The rondo is SO much fun to play. Motown Metal - This song made me wish I played brass or percussion. It's so much like Michael Daugherty, and it really makes you feel like you're in Detroit. Postcard - Fun in general. I loved all the mix meter and time sig. changes. Variations on a Korean Folk Song - Love this piece. Not really hard, but it's just so amazing to listen to. October - U.F.O. - Solo percussionist w/ band. One of my favorite Daugherty Pieces. Red-Cape Tango - Interesting. Very Carmen esque, but very contemporary. Redline Symphony - Of course, Mackey had to be included. I love this song! Turning - Actually rather Creepy, but that's why I love it. Turbine - Another Mackey. So much fun to play! Hemispheres - I love the concept behind this piece. the 1st mvmt. is really awesome. Spin Cycle - This can get kinda dull while listening, but it provides enough entertainment overall... An American Elegy - I have yet to hear a recording/performance I like of this piece, but I think the reason behind it is wonderful. Bach's Fugue in G Minor - I love the band arrangement of this piece. It was taken from an organ fugue, and it fits really well w/ band. Gillingham's Concerto for Four Percussion - This is so dark and twisted, but also insanely hard.
  9. that seems to be the trend with most directors now and days... What about band family??? ... haha, sorry that was a corny joke.
  10. Hm, I honestly don't know... once again, another one of those things our director told us that could or could not be true... I remember watching that show at Carollton I think... I remember the shirts especially, cus we sat right behind your parents while you were performing. I loved the drill, especially when you made all those bells around the field and had the angel wings out there as well. Hopefully something like that is in store for us this next year.
  11. yah, that is extremely big, especially for a 4A school. I know I've heard Conally from somewhere, and if it was from a BOA contest, I probably thought they were 5A just because that is usually a 5A dominated contest. And also, our band program in general really hasn't been introduced to BOA. We know what it is, and we had requested to go last year (But our ISD didn't approve it), but when it comes to the major competitors in that competition, most of our kids are clueless to the big bands there.
  12. actually, no, 4th and 5th were right.
  13. I think we'll be pretty well known by the end of this year... Making another run for state, plus honor band recordings and finally starting to get ourselves out on a national level with our Washington D.C. trip...
  14. I think I have heard of Conally. But when you live where all the state champion bands are, like L.D. Bell, Marcus and Poteet, it's hard to find out about other bands that are around because band life seems to be centered around them at every competition, whether those bands are there or not.
  15. Here's a Midi realization of our shows... they're missing the percussion parts that still need to be written, and so there's long periods of breaks where it seems like the music just stops... and also, this is just a draft of the final 2 mvmts. anyways: http://media.putfile.com/Bells-Mvt1a http://media.putfile.com/Bells-Mvt1b http://media.putfile.com/Bells-Mvt2 http://media.putfile.com/Bells-Mvt3 http://media.putfile.com/Bells-Mvt4a http://media.putfile.com/Bells-Mvt4b
  16. hmm, sorry, but I haven't heard of any of those bands. I'm betting on Poteet to be amazing again though. And if they continue to have 200 kids on the field, it'll be almost impossible to compete with that sort of volume.
  17. GOD! I wish I could watch it... we have something for band going on tonight... Just like the classic saying: "I can't. I have rehearsal..."
  18. Also, I know nobody really cares that much about middle school, but Clark M.S. in Frisco lost both their head director and assit. director... random bit of info. Apparently, if Mr. Hazzard went to Creekview, there was enough money in it that he wouldn't have to write marching shows any longer to keep up his pay. And judging on the price of our marching shows, I can only guess how much of a pay raise that is for him.
  19. mmm, Galveston. I love that little Island. We went there for spring trip this past year. I think it would be fun to belong to a program where it's just expected of you to be area champions or state champs. Hopefully we'll get there soon...
  20. Hahah, that's really horrible that you found all those mistakes. I haven't heard the piece from beginning to end yet, but I've been saving up money to buy all of Whitacres C.d.'s.
  21. well, of course every composer has their own writting style that's easily identifiable (ex: bach and his big organ music, or dvorak and his insane string parts). that's what keeps fans coming back. I do agree that a lot of what Ticheli has written lately his kinda going down-hill. I'm not so much against his useage (or apparent useage) of serialism, cus I'm actually quite a fan of that form of composition, but after a while, it does seem a little middle school esque to me as well.
  22. Where is Area F located? It sounds like it's out down in south west Tx... I hope we can get 20 to go to area. But our region now only has about 6 or 7 4A bands, and assuming that every other region has the same numbers, we'd hafta hope that EVERY one of them made area... hmm, I really hope we have the 20, because last year we had 19...
  23. Hah, it's interesting. A lot of kids in our band really like it, but idk... it's a little to unoriginal from Daugherty for my tastes. I heard from the director at University of Michigan though that Marcus has one of THE best recordings of that song, even better than the North Tx Wind Symphony. Congrats to you guys.
  24. uhm, I'm sorry, but dance in what show? If you're talking about fhs' show from last year, I only saw it from behind a giant tuba player, so I missed most of it. And I couldn't really hear at all because they were facing away from us 98% of the time... I really was interested in seeing it though.
  25. uhm, basically it's us, the colony, sherman, birdville in the easy top four. Keller high could present a problem, but almost all the other bands are really really easy. if you go to the uil website, you can pick out the area alignment and see all the regions in our area (I think its like... regions 5, 7, 24 and 25). Maybe Frisco high will be able to pull something together with a new director...
