  1. The problem with this is that bands would always go for slow easy stuff. There wouldn't be an diversity from show to show. It would become monotonous because bands know that doing slow, easy, boring drill and music would be the bands that always win. And if you have ever sat in the stand at a BOA competition, you will find that amongst other band students and people who are just to watch but may have never really been in band.. do not find these shows entertaining. My parents were never in band, and they would rather see the bands who aren't afraid to take risk and actually do something somewhat appealing to the eye or to the ear win, opposed to the slow boring ones that make them fall asleep. Now, if you take a risk and it's not very good, that's a different story.
  2. That's the group that did the show with a compilation of Journey songs. We always went on RIGHT after them, so I never got to see it. We were standing outside and I heard them counting, though.
  3. There was a point when me and my friends were acting like George of the Jungle. It was funny.
  4. As far as drama on the floor goes, there really wasn't anything to report. :] It was a fun and very competitive regional. We took first place in the Independent A class.
  5. Haha, my director is Chris[Mr. Kichline]. One of my dear friend's guard was also bumped up to RA. Argyle HS.
  6. I'm in the A Guard. Well thanks. I'm glad you liked them. Open is further along than we are. We have quite a few changes to make. We really put a lot of those things in just to have the full show for Austin. I think Code Black will be awesome with some cleaning. They had quite a few drops in Prelims. Also, the show is REALLY busy. Most of the time it's great, but there are a few parts where there is so much going on, that there really isn't much visual contrast in the show. I have to admit though, the rifle sabre section where they were in diags and they split apart and did alternating work was awesome!
  7. Actually, the marching Euphonium emits a more pure/mellow sound. It's easier to be melodic on a Euphonium. It's almost as if you took a concert Euphonium and put it on your shoulder. Well, it really depends on which woodwind instrument you switch from. Flutes usually have an easier time with french horn and mello, while saxes have an easier time with lower brass instruments.
  8. I "dropped" my horn because I got mauled by a prop, if that counts. Yeah. It flew 20 yards over while my mouthpiece went about 35 yards over. Not fun.
  9. I did like the movie. I was just turned off a little at how NOTHING was explained in the movie. I just want to know what the things were. Haha. But the part where that girl blew up was kinda tight.
  10. I am in Ars Nova. I'm in the A group. Our show is getting there. Idk if you remember it, but I am the first one to come out after the sabre section.
  11. The best thing that I can say to do is contact one of this big guys up there in the WGI ladder. Brian Greenleaf and Matt Garrett are two really good ones. I had never done winterguard until August, when I joined Ars Nova, which is an Independent Guard. It was very hard, but I have a learned a lot. Even though it's in the middle of the season, I am pretty sure that for now, you could go to practices and learn basics in dance and equipment, then be ready come marching and winterguard season. JFYI, I don't know if you know this or not.. But equipment handling is one thing. There is this whole other thing called Dance.. **** dude. It will kick your butt. If you're interested in seeing some guard shows, here are a few good ones still left after most of them had to be deleted from YouTube. Ars Nova 2005 - Took 4th in the Independent Open Class. Seminole High School 2005 - Not sure what they took this year, but they are normaly in finals. Apex Winterguard - Great show. James Logan HighSchool 2007 - This is from the back, so sorry. They won Scholastic World. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Utgt8U31mwI...feature=related
  12. Any music by Ticheli, Shostakovich, and Samuel Barber. Mhm.
  13. I'm in Ars Nova. Hope you enjoy our show. Both groups have the whole show on the floor already. This is going to be a great year.
  14. I am one of the drill techs for this band. Haha, we are aware that the body movements are cheesy. This was the first year the school was open. It was 60% freshman, and the rest of them pretty much came from Summit HS. They were introduced to a completely different marching style, so the head band director started things off with an easier show. I think it was good for them considering. Going in starting off with a hard show might have been a bad idea. I must say. For a first year band, their high brass section sounded pretty awesome from person to person. Very clean. Look out for this band next year, I say.
  15. I think Marching Band is unique when it comes to this question. I think, if you really delve into what it really is.. just look at everything involved in it. Performance. Physical Stamina. Physical Ability. Musicality. Multitasking. Competitive(ness). Friendship. Family. Art. Sportsmanship. Geometry. Practice. Seriously. In my eyes it's so hard to classify. But in my opinion, I do not believe we work any less harder than Football or Soccer players do. How many Football Players can hold up an instrument, while marching in step with the beat, keeping time with the hands of the drum major or listening back to the drumline, playing music, finding places to breathe, using proper posture, having proper balance, step size, and spacing, having high toes, watching where sets are on the field, going for 8-12 mins while doing all; this at speeds up to 200 bpm... all at the same time? Yeah. :]
  16. I can't quite remember the beginning part with the yoga. I know it had the word Blessid in the name. However, the song "In the Sublime" is by The Supreme Beings of Leisure. They have a myspace, as well. Some pretty good music. Check 'em out! It was crazy. Ars Nova is pretty much based in my (ex) hs so we were around them a lot. That show was tight. Blows that they didn't make finals at WGI.
  17. That show was insane. Definitely deserved to win that year.
  18. Agreed. I'm not much of a fan for that show, either.
  19. I just noticed that LD Bell's flags in Lux Arumque this year were the same ones they used in '05. That's cool. They incorporated a lot of the same things.
  20. The placings in this comp ticked a lot of people off. I don't think anyone is where they should have been. I had Wylie in 1st. I felt bad for them. People in the stands laughed when they were announced for 4th place. :[ Music def won you the competition. I saw pretty sloppy performances visually. There were quite a few entertaining bands though! I think it was Midland. Their bases put them in a circle and ran around it beating on the drums during the band's playing of Sing Sing Sing [With a little swing]. Freaking tight. Just goes to show you the difference between BOA and regular comps.
  21. Well, to explain what I meant a little further.. My senior year our drill was pretty hard. The music didn't make the drill harder. It made playing harder because so much energy and breathing was used on the drill. By the end of the show, it was extremely hard to play, not exactly to march the drill. I see what you're saying. Sorry I made myself sound like I was in the right. ;[ How is playing hard music while marching in a straight line different from easy music in a straight line? I mean, no matter what you play it's still just a straight line. (Trying to get to the bottom of this. Haha. Sorry to keep it going.)
  22. So that small section from Blue Cathedral isn't in the actual piece? That part is amazing. I have show concepts lined up with that section in it. :[
  23. I'm a fan of black uniforms. I like others, too, but black is mi favorito. My Top 3 Favorite Uniforms: LD Bell - I used to think they had ugly uniforms. I thought the grey pants were wooof. When they got new uniforms, I nearly had a panic attack. They are so nice and the style is frikin' cool. Crossmen - Dude. These uniforms are tight! There is nothing about them I hate. Phantom Regiment's Mid 90's - These black uniforms with the small cape on the back. darn. These uniforms just look amazing. It may be because of how amazing they performed that show, but all I know is the silver instruments looked sexy with those uniforms.
