So a judge CAN give tied scores/rankings. I say that cuz in one discussion room I was asking why there are hardly any ties given to two bands from one judge.

Wait they tied? Who won the tiebreaker?

My 12 finals locks were spot on and two of my 7 bubble finalist made it. I heard Westlake was first out and they were in my bubble so that confirms my list even more.

Oh ok so everyone gets a number and they perform in numerical order based on whether they’re in top half or bottom half.

I hear you. I’m still trying to master these predictions. Sometimes my predictions are wrong for prelims but are right for finals or vice versa. Or I’ll place a band solely on one aspect of their performance instead of the whole thing, and be right for that category but not the whole placement. And I’m still trying to figure out the different ways judges adjudicate prelims vs finals.

I remember at my high school’s marching contest the announcer came on after prelims performances when the judges are tabulating the scores and said “If it were easy we’d be done already”.

Small thing but does anyone else expect the announcer to always say Flower Mound High School after they say “joining us from Flower Mound, TX…” like me? It always trips me up when they say Marcus instead😩

I honestly think a high school band making dci finals isn’t out of the question. Winning it of course would be extremely unlikely as drum corps regularly break 98 and there’s only ever been one 98 in BOA, but I can see finals appearances as BOA and DCI score similarly. I’d expect the scores to look different though since they are weighted differently in each respective activity. If there was a UIL style competition then I think the notion that a high school band would never make finals would hold up better since UIL focuses more on raw talent.

I won’t give up on figuring out how to accurately predict placements!😩 Imma master this at some point! I’m learning that I have to consider a performance in its entirety and not place a band based on one particular quality. And I’m trying to figure out the different judging styles between prelims and finals. Sometimes I’ll inaccurately place a band in prelims but that placement would’ve been accurate if it were finals or vice versa.
