  1. Privately shared recap 👀 Nice! Can you do a Top Ten of the placements in the captions to get a better gauge on what could potentially be those finalist spots for Area Finals?
  2. If I recall the caption awards, like guard, percussion, etc. are scored individually but DONT count and add towards the total scoring of the ensembles. So like what happened with results this year, you could win a bunch of captions, and still have a lower total score than other groups. I'd LOVE to get my eyes on some recaps and see exactly what happened 👀
  3. Unfortunately couldn't attend any contest this weekend - but man was it fun to see the results come out from the various contests around the area! This prediction is pretty on the money with 1 - 4, 5 - 8 can flip flop a billion different ways depending on the area panel, and the giant mystery right now is the last 2 slots of finals with 9 - 10. Paetow topped Langham Creek and Katy at Katy Marching Contest, and theres Cy Ranch and Cy Park who have been doing freaking AWESOME this year with their shows so far. Saturday with the Battle at the Berry should be VERY interesting to see how the results shake out and what's going to happen with those last couple Area Finals spots!
  4. I feel like this year is going to be a shake up year with a lot of different placements compared to what has occurred in the past - I can't wait to see what happens over the next couple weeks with more time for programs to clean, develop, and refine their shows! 🤩
  5. ^ All of that! The judges sheets don't focus on and list criteria for excitement, volume, etc. it's always things like precision, quality, consistency, accuracy, etc. #CleanWins
  6. For sure! I'm really curious to see what happens in a couple of weeks when the Katy groups go head to head against each other at the Katy Marching Festival. With a couple more weeks of cleaning and improving shows, it'll be really interesting to see how everything shakes out when they are all seen by the same judging panel throughout the day. I still think the top 3 in the Area are still locked in place unless something absolutely catastrophic occurs during their performance, but the BOA results does make things much more interesting for the groups who are in that massively changing 4-7 placements. Feels very much like finals will be a locked 1-3, flip flop changing 4 - 7, and flip flop changing bubble groups 8 - 10.
  7. I have been trolling around trying to find full recaps and saw a prelims recap posted for a second that got deleted 🫤 I wish I had gotten a screenshot of the scores (got posted and was probably told to take it down by staff) but there were some WEIRD ordinals that I saw from the sheet. It feels harsh to say this but Clements just isn't the same band that they were years ago from their sound and performance in all the videos Ive seen of them the past couple years. I was at the BOA contest the other day and have been trolling for results and sheets because I was pretty surprised at what the results from finals was for everyone.
  8. This was a wonderful contest top to bottom! I get it to one degree, but I also don't get people being so upset when one group makes finals and the immediate vitriol and hate towards that group and the judges. These are KIDS who are working their butts off to potentially earn the ability to perform again in finals throughout the day. Go be haters somewhere else. ✌️ In any event, massive kudos and props to all the groups throughout the day! This was one of the better top to bottom Houston BOA contests in a minute with the performances from everyone. Can't wait to see all the groups in a couple weeks at the next contests!
  9. They had a great performance at BOA! After I saw their performance in prelims I had them slated and I thought for sure they were going to be in finals. Love the energy and support that the parents give for the kiddos during those long days! 👏 #BandParentsTheRealMVPs
  10. Anyone else see the BOA North Houston results?!? 👀 With Cinco beating out Jordan and Tompkins, that has definitely changed my predictions and thoughts!
  11. They do caption awards for the contest. Here's the results from finals of last years contest and caption awards. (2023 Results) Finals Results 1. Spring 2. Paetow 3. Barbers Hill 4. Elkins 5. Kempner 6. Dobie 7. Ridge Point Best Winds - Spring Best Percussion - Paetow Best Color Guard - Barbers Hill
  12. Unless I'm looking at the wrong information, it is unfortunately looking like based upon the campuses drawn into the Area, that it will be 4 schools advancing to state this year. I'd LOVE to be proven wrong and see a 5th spot in there! 🤞
  13. Its the week of the contest - put those final predictions in now! 🤣 Basing this purely on videos that I can find online right now, so obviously take with a massive grain of salt, really curious to see how it all shapes out on Saturday! 1: Dickinson 2: Fulshear 3: Clements 4: Pasadena Memorial 5: Spring 6: Paetow 7: Clear Falls 8: Barbers Hill 9: Deer Park 10: Dobie What are your finals predictions?
  14. Anyone have a schedule for this contest? Trying to decide which contest to potentially go to that weekend to watch and hear performances before Area contest later in October 😅
  15. That's a pretty brutal long day for that program if that's what they are intending on doing 😬 Does anyone know someone in the program or a parent who can confirm their schedule for that day?
  16. Some Houston Area Groups: Paetow HS out of Katy ISD and CyFair HS from CyFair ISD Show starts at around 37 seconds in for CyFair
  17. Well that escalated quickly! Its very bare bones early season but looks like theyre off to a good start! No offense to the Paetow groups in the past, but this already looks and sounds better in August than they did during contest performances last year I've found online......is it just me?
  18. Always a sucker for a nice double reed solo in a marching show! Side note - watching the video I'm seeing front sideline mics behind the oboe soloist, are they adding those the first time this year, or have I always missed them? I didn't think CyFair was one of the schools who needed the micing at the front of the field to project their ensemble sound
  19. Anyone see or find online those early season halftime performances? VERY curious to see all the different groups shows in this Area especially this year 👀
  20. Having lawyers in the family always makes me read some verbiage of items with an unfortunate pessimistic viewpoint. I sent them over to one of my sisters whose husband is a lawyer and he had the same indication I did upon reading them; "The verbiage is deliberately vague and written to avoid liability and culpability in the instance of anything going wrong." It wouldn't be such an issue if there was more equitable application of these across the state, and if resources were provided to programs such as the cold water immersion tanks etc. but unfortunately thats not the case and will probably never be the case. 🫤
  21. Good luck to the judges making anyone happy with not just who is getting the finalists spots, captions, and finals placement 👀 #ImJustHereToWatchGoodBandsBeAmazing
  22. Hey y'all! Posting this topic as a genuine question to gather more information and data from as many people as possible, and see if anyone can explain it more to me. According to the UIL guidelines, there are specific ranges with the WBGT that dictate groups limit their practice time & increase breaks, or flat out can not be outside in any capacity. Which is honestly a good thing. Back in my day we just had to deal with it and only went inside when kids started puking or falling out from the heat. Here's where I scratch my head and wonder what the heck is going on with this system. I'm down in the Houston area, and the other day the WBGT according to multiple weather apps and a monitor that a neighbor has was anywhere from 95.6 to 97.2 for the WBGT. That is CRAZY hot and humid to get a reading that high. Now here's where it gets fun, guess what was also occurring at that time? Tennis matches, football scrimmages, etc. at the high school campus that's down the road from me. When I asked around, apparently the WBGT guidelines DO NOT apply AT ALL for contests, matches, games, etc. I looked it up, and it says the exact same thing! This is directly from the UIL website: WBGT practice guidelines and limitations do not apply to UIL competitions, but it is recommended that schools monitor WBGT conditions prior to and during the game and use appropriate emergency action plans for high temperature and humidity. Pardon my french, but how the heck does that make sense?! It's ok to limit practice time when the reading is too high, but when it's a competition, when students arguably push themselves harder because it 'matters more', it's ok?! Can ANYONE provide a reasonable justification to this reasoning? Additionally, it seems the WBGT MASSIVELY effects groups down in Houston, San Antonio, etc. more than other groups. I called a friend who lives up in Dallas, and their WBGT temps were within range to hold practices and rehearsal times the other day when all of Houston was considered the surface of the sun. Seems like these guidelines are greatly disproportionately effecting some groups more than others, and make it impossible to compete with groups who can actually get outside and rehearse. Would love to hear others perspectives and experiences with these new guidelines as well.
  23. Not quite - but after the rules changes from the past with prelims finals it's easy to get mixed up on things. Below is a copy paste directly from the UIL Rules. For the Area there SHOULD be over 20 groups in prelims, which means 10 Advance to Finals. (1) 9 Or Fewer Bands. If there are 9 or fewer bands, the preliminary round will stand as the final round. The top 50% of the competing bands will be recognized as finalists and will receive a finalist award, while the remaining bands will receive a participant award. There will be a drum major retreat held at the end of the competition to announce the results. The names of those bands advancing to the state marching band contest will be announced. (2) 10 to 19 Bands. If there are 10 to 19 bands, the top 7 bands will advance from the preliminary round to the final round. In addition, any band below seventh place that receives a ranking of three or higher from at least two of the music judges and one of the marching judges will also advance to the final round. The two marching judges and two of the music judges will change captions. There will be a drum major retreat at the end of preliminary round to announce the results. Bands not advancing to the final round will receive a participant award. At the end of the final round there will be a drum major retreat where each band will receive a finalist award and the names of those bands advancing to the state marching band contest will be announced. Under extenuating circumstances such as severe weather or limited participation, the contest officials in consultation with the State Director of Music may declare the preliminary round to be the final contest. (3) 20 to 29 Bands. If there are 20 to 29 bands, the top 10 bands will advance from the preliminary round to the final round. In addition, any band below tenth place that receives a ranking of three or higher from at least two of the music judges and one of the marching judges will also advance to the final round. The two marching judges and two of the music judges will change captions. There will be a drum major retreat at the end of the preliminary round to announce the results. Bands not advancing to final round will receive a participant award. (4) 30 Or More Bands. If there are 30 or more bands, the top 12 bands will advance from the preliminary round to the final round. In addition, any band below twelfth place that receives a ranking of three or higher from at least two of the music judges and one of the marching judges will also advance to the final round. The two marching judges and two of the music judges will change captions. There will be a drum major retreat at the end of the preliminary round to announce the results. 24. Just a guess, but with Jordans performance time being the exact same as their BOA show time, they'll be more likely than not pulling out of this contest.
  25. Does Tompkins keep its state spot? - Yes, but barely Does Jordan beat out Tompkins? - I think they are closer this year than ever before, but will be just behind Tompkins Does Bridgeland Win the area again? Depending on how well fair does? - Yes - 1: Bridgeland 2: Cy-Fair Could Jordan Beat out 7L for a state spot? - Not this year - next year I think they really push and get it What happens with Cinco Ranch, JET, Katy, Cy-Ranch, Langham, Paetow, Jersey Village? How does that order change up? - This is the biggest mystery of all and the thing I'm most excited about for this area, depending on the day of the week this order can change up drastically! JV is also apparently got some issues they're working through so I wonder if that will effect their performance this year Could one of those bands surprise everyone? - Possibly! Who is it going to be and what kind of a surprise? A new group at state? A new group in finals? Just so many questions!! Makes me claw at this year for area. - SO! TRUE!
